What is DITRA-HEAT?
SchluterDITRA-HEAT is a complete radiant heating solution. It integrates customizable DITRA-HEAT-E-HK heating cablesand an uncoupling underlayment mat. The DITRA mat uncouples the tile from the wood subfloor and can also be waterproofed. According to Schluter,DITRA-HEAT provides uncoupling through its geometric configuration, which allows for in-plane movement that effectively neutralizes the differential movement stresses between the substrate and the tile, thus eliminating the major cause of cracking and delaminating of the tiled surface.The DITRA mats have “wire- stud” like structures evenly spaced. These studs are designed to allow for the easy installation of DITRA-HEAT-E-HK heating cables. Additionally, once installed, you do not need to cover the heating cables with thin set or self-leveling compound, significantly reducing installation time and effort.This allows you to be able to walk on the cables, and even tile over them immediately after installation.Custom Placed HeatI like the DITRA-HEAT system because it provides protection from tile cracking [uncoupling] and the flexibility to install the heating cables with wherever heat is desired.

As installer I recommend if the high traffic area to cover with thinset if not going to be tiled right away, so no damage to the heat coil happens, it's going to get tiles and thinset regardless your not saving much thinset at all in the end, or if your DIY person it also makes using the trowel easier when pre filled.

Nothing like the toilet leaking down the road cause some scholar of the trades installed the radiant too close to the flange and it keeps melting the wax seal.. seen that twice

I read all the comments hoping I would not have to ask. But, what if doing a remodel of just the restroom and you don't any means or methods to run a dedicated circuit? Can you tie into a 110V outlet that "probably" shares a breaker with 10 other outlets?

Build yourself a small, simple spool stand so the cable comes off easily without coiling up on you.

Hi Rob. I have found from a few installations that Schluter is not very informative on their electrical wiring needs. When using their 220V kits, do you find their neutral-less 20A is sufficient. The last install, my flooring supplier checked for me to confirm, and it was a 12/2 on a double pole or tandem single pole breaker. I installed a 12/3 anyway just to,have the additional conductor. Is this your experience? Thanks for the video. I always enjoy your channel and find your content useful!

Terrific video information. How thick does the subfloor need to be in order to use the Ditra underlayment with heat system?
@JohnMartin-yj3gv
@JohnMartin-yj3gv 6 месяцев назад
Where I live in British Columbia, the building code is 1.5" thickness for a subfloor for tile. Two sheets (layers) of rough both sides 3/4 " thick fir plywood.

Hi does the Mat have insulation properties or do you have to use warmup boards or any insulation for that matter underneath ? Thank you
@ConcordCarpenter
@ConcordCarpenter 5 лет назад
zuluula maybe a lil but it’s not designed for that, DItra has a mat that has a thermal break that they recommend for cold floors, concrete, etc

Can you use this with wood or laminate flooring and would you need to do a thin set layer on top if you go this route

Igor Kosterin check out this last project I did: www.aconcordcarpenter.com/wood-floors-and-electric-radiant-heat.html Scroll down for video. I’ll have to ask if this is doable with DItra

Do you recommend a plastic notched trowel to avoid potential damage when putting down thinset for tile? Or is the cable embedded low enough in the Ditra mat to alleviate this concern?
@ConcordCarpenter
@ConcordCarpenter 2 года назад
Manuf does but most pros do a coat over the wired with the flat end the use the notched with the tile
@frankkennedy5361
@frankkennedy5361 2 года назад
@@ConcordCarpenter thank you for your reply. I’m far from a tile pro. So just to be safe I think I will use a plastic notched trowel over the wire.

What about adding a family room to a core floor home. Is Dita Heating ok to use for floor heat vs tube in concrete with a boiler heat system? Family room size 10x28
@ConcordCarpenter

boiler system more expensive to install but cheaper to run, i’d try to figure out the payoff period and ROI
