Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir introduces a number of striking works by Alfred Schnittke in collaboration with Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen and Golden Days Festival.
He was basically an unknown outside the Soviet Union until the early 80s and he was not popular amongst the ruling elite of his homeland. His music was found to be highbrow and elitist; however, after the Wall fell, he moved to Hamburg and, in no time, experienced being a great and well-known name.

Schnittke really paints the darkest dark in music ever seen

Pure genius. Schnittke has distilled 2000 years of prayers of hopeless waiting into one spiritual tour de force of brutal honesty!

Not to disparage this superb performance in any way, but I prefer the Tuba Mirum in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-icNHpzt2JzA.html

Sounds great ... the opening requiem is slow, but not draggy, and doesn't fall apart. Great sound separation; kudos to recording engineers. Maestro Dahl also shapes sound well.

Super performance from both choir and musicians. Great HD video quality. Record reading from Church in Copenhagen. Can't do better. Nice quality of music and picture. Danish quality at its best. A very nice reproduction of Schnittke's work Thank you for sharing this work.

This is a phenomenal execution of this piece. This is probably my fifth time back listening to its entirety. It brings back memories of the most elite choirs I have been a part of. Wonderful team work, everyone 🖤

As to people who say "not enough organ," I've heard other recordings where the organ was not that much louder than this. I don't think the organ should be "standing out."

Schnittke was born in Germany, fled to Russia during the 1940's and moved back to Germany where he died in 1988. His Choral music is performed regularly, yet his quirky tendency to compose what some call "confusing" music has not been as welcome in many orchestras.

Schnittke was born in Engels in Russia and only in 1989 he resettled to Germany and took 2nd nationality German. He died in Hamburg, but was buried in Moscow.

Lovely choir and orchestra, but I was disappointed that the organ doesn't always shine through very well in this recording. It probably sounded amazing live though!

Replying just as I did to you on another recording of this work: I've heard other recordings where the organ isn't much louder. IMO, the organ is not supposed to "stand out."

@@paulb9842 it is beautiful in the way it paints a picture. A very vivid majestic one, at that. The intentional disharmony, it paints such a picture of darkness. Like wandering in the catacombs of an abandoned church in a horror game. To write a piece this intentionally disharmonious requires hard work and a certain kind of integenuity.

Thanks for trying to explain. It is really hard work. Also the performance from the musicians. But to be honest. I can't find beauty and I tried for years. Also I think this kind of music will never find a place among ordinary people. I feel like the child in: Des Kaisers neue Kleider...
