It’s kind of an emphasized „ohh“ you use when something goes wrong and you want to express both awareness of the situation, alert others and apologize to them in the same word. Like „ope, I just bumped into you, don’t fall, I am sorry“.

I'm from South Central KS. Born and raised here. We definitely use the, "Ope, let me squeeze by you." Or "Ope, sorry about that." Especially now with social distancing in effect everywhere it's very polite and effective when you get too close to another customer. I'm finding I have more in common with my northern Midwestern brothers and sisters than I ever realized. Made a friend online from MI back in 2015 and we have visited each other a few times. MI almost feels like home to me. I would consider moving there but I hear your winters are pretty killer. Also had the joy of taking the ferry over to WI from Grand Rapids in summer 2019. More good Midwestern folks over there.

I was born and still live in Anchorage Alaska. I noticed I started saying "ope" when I was trying to navigate through a crowded area (school, mall, church, etc.) I've never lived elsewhere, and grandpa on my moms side is from South Carolina. He had a thick SC accent. The rest of us are Alaskan native/Russian/Swedish decent. Its funny finding similarities I relate with in these videos.

I'm a lifelong Chicagoan and I just realized I've been saying this my whole life. I think it came from a combination of "oh" and "oops".

I was born in WstAllis, grew up in Muskego, and until now I NEVER thought I used ope. But now I see it used in context, and ope der it is! Now for the real comment. Ope, where is Da Manitowoc Minute? I haven’t had a best minute of my life in WEEKS! YA retiring der, Charlie?

I didn't I would find someone else on one of these videos who grew up in the same town! This video was also a real eye opener because I found out I say "ope" 34827 times in one day. I always thought growing up I didn't have an accent but now it's painfully obvious...
