@@fritzjackson4336 I'm South Asian and agree a lot. Most students fear raising their hand or asking questions. They always have to act the best and smartest and be better than everyone else. And then there's cases like me... I used to be the one who asked questions a lot but the teachers scolded me for asking "out of syllabus" questions or accused me of trying to defame them by asking creative questions so they would slip up and kids could make fun of them. Of course I wasn't doing any of that, I was just curious. But the teacher's responses made me shut up and stop speaking up in class.

OMG, that Korean girl's mom--she really pulled out all the stops. The breakfast looks like a fine spread at a high-end restaurant, with the best dishes lovingly prepared. She must've gotten up at like 5 am to prepare such a feast. Just look at how nervous she looks at 8:55. I bet she's thinking, "What are they saying in English? I hope I did my best!" The apartment is spotless and the china in the dining room is very nicely presented. She was like--damn, the BBC is coming. Must make things perfect!!!

That is why the comparison is not fair. I paid school fees in London for my children as my parents did for me and we wanted that kind of education. I must have put in 10,00 hours of practice in classical music alone as a teenager so am not surprisingly very good and have ended up a pretty good lawyer too. If you took the children from say London's Westminster school and compared them with these you would have much more similarities. Wales is a very deprived part of the UK.

+Alexis Ang Really ? i thought education at singapore is one of the top ... here in australia it's totally loose, we can basically chill in years 7,8,9. (by chill i still mean homework and necessary assignments, getting ahead but still having 5/7 days of the week to relax). its slightly different during the final years (12th grade mainly), though still sort of chill but can be demanding. obviously we have outliers and extremely talented students as well. It's been said that singapore is like 4-5 years ahead in syllabus material compared to australia, e.g 11th grade chemistry will be learnt in yr 7 or something. is that true ? if so, that'll be very demanding and singapore education is quite respected in aus
@Clayfreak99

Alexis Ang not all jcs close so early. Mine closes at 10. But it's true that Singapore students don't have such a long day. Some students have tuitions after school like korean hagwon.
@bunnywen
@bunnywen 7 лет назад
I agree with Alexis. At least students in Singapore still get to participate in Sports, Dance, Drama and Music after school hours -- say usually after 2pm. Most 13 to 16 year old Singaporean kids study from 8am to 1pm with a 30 minute recess. There are also a few Physical Education sessions, special music or dance program woven in every week to make school more interesting. Every school system has it's pros and cons but in my opinion, it is how the parents try to balance the importance of play vs studying, learning other skills vs just book smart, and highlight the significance of character, values education before academics, to their children that matters. It will highly affect how children show up in life as adults in future, good results or not.

Kinda misleading to say 80% of the population was illiterate 60 years ago and not say WHY that was the case. The Japanese kept Koreans from attending school and also outlawed the use of the Korean language. The way it’s stated around the 13 minute mark just makes it sound like they were simply behind and made a miraculous jump forward thanks to their “religious devotion” to education.

@Abigail Prather i'm asian, just like we're more study harder, we're more genius/ smart / can beat them etc, lmaoo NO, indeed we're more like nerd person, while they're like party etc, but there're type of people like us too in there and they are incredible genius/smart/ even they're not study hard like asian students but just like reading one time, they can memorize all one book/ solving difficult questions ( there're kind of people like that). Their learning process also different, we're more like to take from textbook etc, while they are more talking/asking. Maybe some korean students can beat them but as university like harvard mehhh i bet it's rare.. you must be hella genius ( also they don't just have like nerd person in there, but like active/leadership students who can make solution etc). Btw in harvard/some prestigious university in USA, there're many asian students ( including korea/china) / students around the world ( like europa/middle east and they're like the best students when they're in high school/ have won like international competition etc). In this we're talking about harvard right?? But if you wanna put like reguler students from high school in USA and korea, just put it,, but put the all of genius students, they're very competitive too ( i bet there're some asian who school/grow up in USA in the list students ) ..

Fun fact: Here in Ireland after our GCSE equivalent you take a ‘gap year’ where you attend school but the teachers aren’t allowed to teach you anything on the A level-equivalent curriculum. You get no homework. In this year, many Irish teenagers set up their own business and become rich, or they get good at a sport and discover their hobbies. This is the year when many quiet people become confident in themselves. I was actually severely depressed before I went into transition year, but it completely healed my soul. Many studies have shown that students who do transition year have much higher grades in their A level equivalent. I went from failing maths to winning national maths competitions in just one year. I didn’t really study maths over TY, it was just that I took a break and recovered from depression. The school environment was so toxic before TY, with intense bullying. However, everyone matured over TY and there’s a great atmosphere nowadays.

As a Korean dude I can't envy your system more. this is certainly what Koreans HAVE TO learn. we are all bragging about how much time we spend each day for studying but what about the efficiency? I was in the middle of that system and honestly not many students can actually learn anything after 5-6 hours of work per day. after that it's more of hollow gimmick and there are so many studies that proves longer hours of studying past certain amount of time will eventually make you dumber in all aspects. furthermore in terms of emotional/psychological impact on them, well anyone with common sense can expect what will happen. I am so sure that 10 years after the graduation from this BS these Welsh kids will be WAY ahead in creativity, quality of life, actual knowledge/skills and so forth, compares to these Korean kids.
@NegativeAccelerate
@NegativeAccelerate Год назад
@@MyronChoe I'm pretty sure Koreans are a lot more educated than Irish kids. The extra time studying definately makes them learn more. But, I suspect Irish kids are happier than Korean kids and perhaps more educated in each of their specific hobbies. So for example, one of my friends loves writing and published a book at age 16. Korean kids who are better writers than my friend don't have the chance to publish their books because they're busy studying. A couple kids earned quite a bit of money playing as a band at concerts. I myself represented Ireland in a satellite building competition and learned how to code. I also partied a lot and made great friends and developed basic social skills. Then, I somehow managed to represent Ireland in the maths olympiad. A guy from a town near me wom a science competition and sold his project for a couple million euro at 16 and is now a billionaire. A girl in my school came second in the European Junior Olympics for decathlon. Irish kids are definitely worse at maths, science etc than Korean kids but they have more time to be really good at things they enjoy.

having good results from studying very hard isnt surprising. they should have gone to finland - students spend 4 hours a day at school, dont have any homework, they dont study subjects (as we know them) - and their results are the best. now, thats a mystery... Korean school system is just about strain learning - too much expectation, too much pressure, too much stress. Doesnt this kill creativity???

@dusanveselka3240
@dusanveselka3240 7 лет назад
but studying 14 hours a day because of competitiveness is not the point. The question is if this system is actually any good. The fact that they have good result is due to their morbid drills. When I was talking about Finland, their results are just as good, but they spend 4 hours a day at school with no homework. working hard to achieve something is not always as good as finding the right way of doing things.
@zogibear
@zogibear 7 лет назад
They also don't really cover the suicide rate of students from the pressure of studying. And as like Matt Washer said, we should look at the broad range of subjects from maths and sciences, to philosophy, music art etc. The Finnish system has been well praised the past years. Although looking through, this documentary wants to focus on the effort put in by the government as a whole into education, which, can't be a bad thing.
@SY-ok2dq
@SY-ok2dq 7 лет назад
zogibear The suicide rate is high. But it's high OVERALL, that is, for Koreans as a whole, for all age groups, not just students. You have to understand Korean culture and what it's like living in a competitive society where there's a feeling of intense competition (such as job interviews, and getting into companies- so many other more accomplished candidates...), a lot of expectation from parents and family and society, and not much of a social security net. It's not like Scandinavian countries where everyone expects to be able to get good unemployment payouts, or disability pensions etc. The suicide rate among students - as far as factors go, I don't think exam and study pressure is the most significant factor. Bullying by their peers, and generally unsatisfying lives (including unsatisfying home lives) is probably a bigger factor.
@zogibear
@zogibear 7 лет назад
S Y I do understand it quite a bit and I know of the pressures that exist in that culture having grown up in it. Forgive me for not making my point clearer. I wasn't suggesting that the Korean system copy that of the Finnish system but instead have the UK system look at it too. Not only that but also look into the range of subjects being taught. I do believe that both Scandinavian and Korean governments put a hell of lot of emphasis on eduction which is a positive point and sadly something that isn't as strong in the UK. I mention the suicide factor as the stress and pressure and competitiveness starts so young and builds up into adult hood. It's something I feel, the Korean government may not be tackling head on as much. I can imagine mental health is still a touchy subject.

Fair points but two things should be considered: First of all, SK has an extremely high rate of depression and suicide among teens, which should raise major red flags for countries trying to learn from their system. Second, they study this hard to get into the top universities, but once there, they don't perform at the same level. I'm currently studying at one of the top three universities in the country (Yonsei) and almost all European students outperform their Korean classmates with less effort. This, I believe, is because at university, learning by heart doesn't cut it anymore and learning to understand becomes crucial (inspiration vs. perspiration). I guess Europe and Korea can and should both learn from each other.

I taught English in South Korea (not at those students' level, however) and I can tell you that my high school students, specifically, were extremely stressed. They'd tell me they wanted out, they'd ask me about how I could take artsy extra-curricular activities when I was in school. And when I would be asked to write tests, my custom questions that I'd spent hours crafting based on the subjects we'd learned throughout the semester were returned to me with the express request by my co-teachers to take stuff directly from the book (questions word-for-word) as opposed to actually crafting questions that will make the students think. They're taught not to think creatively; they cram from textbooks. It made some of our conversations where I'd try to ask them to think about their answers, fall completely flat. And, the kids barely ever see their parents. The kids are depressed and/or suicidal. It doesn't matter to me if they're the smartest in the world. In the end, I quit teaching in Korea after my second contract was over because I couldn't bear to contribute to their depressingly deceptive system. Let the kids be kids. Screw hagwons.

They condemn it pretty brutally "who is it that turned us into studying machines and labelled us as number one or failures... ...who is it that made us stand on our closest friends to get to the top" is part of the lyrics to their song "N.O." They have another one called "School of Tears" which is genuinely horrifying, it is about school bullying and from everything I know, the song does not exaggerate. SK isn't that much different, but look at the growth they've achieved since the Korean War.

Education is obviously important, but prioritizing it over the long-term psychological health of a person scares me. I mean think about how these kids will develop, after their mental well-being has deteriorated from such a young age. The video asks: "What does it take to have the best school in the world?". I think a better question would be: what is the cost of having the best school in the world?

This is not education. One cannot concentrate for 12-14 hours straight without any break on studies. Yes it is advisable to revise what you were taught in your school on the same day but this is madness. One can put in 4-5 hours of self study and be at the top of the class. Imagine studying continuously from 8 am to 11 PM. Will you be able to maintain the same level of concentration? No.

It's true that Korea has a high suicide rate, but that doesn't mean everyone is suicidal. The Korean kids are pressured to do well in school just like kids from anywhere else, and they sometimes have fun hanging out with their friends once in a while just like kids from anywhere else. Grace Kim not all kids would be this good at English - majority of Koreans aren’t - but “gangnam kids” usually have wealthy parents or middle-class parents who save to send their kids abroad for a summer or two to get them fluent in English. It’s really important. The parents know that fluency in English (with natural accent) will only further benefit their kids futures and give them more opportunities - especially if they want to apply for Oxbridge in England or IV league universities in America. I always heard about Koreans whose parents sent them to USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand - UK not as much (in my personal experience)

As a korean, as someone who experienced this system alrerady, I would NEVER BACK to high schoo againl. NEVER. You have so many chances to find out feel how real world is in your teenager. We need to be happy before we get high rankings in the world.
@SY-ok2dq
@SY-ok2dq 7 лет назад
Kuppy Mon You're Korean. So you know that Korean parents don't care that much about their kids being happy. They care more about their kids' report cards, exam results, and eventually, the universities their kids get into. And they care what jobs their kids get, and they care what other people will think of them. How many Korean parents would be satisfied with their kids deciding they want to be happy and not study so hard and not go to university and get jobs as car mechanics?

Nope. Finland used to be top with the education system. for the past 10+ years the results have gone worse and they still are getting worse. Finland is pretty mediocre now.

Lischu they are actually still on top and the peeps that don't really get along gets more help like my brother and sister. But i find it rly easy in school. But I actually just care that we gets good education and now we start to get better education and it's more simpler than it has been before. And we learn certain things in different periods, the most countries do that lol.

Yeah no. I'm a Finn myself too. I got my education in Finland when the pisa scores were in the top 3. 15 years ago. Now Reading #4, Science #5, Maths #13. That is not top. The quality of the education is still good, but it is not top. It is not as good as it was and the results and the quality of the education is getting worse and it has gone worse ever since 2006. We're not even #1 in Europe anymore. So yeah, we used to be very good, but we are not anymore and instead of telling ourselves 10 year old lies we should focus on figuring out where we went wrong.

At 26:37 when the english teacher was giving a grammar lesson, said that Tommy is diligent and has passion, if he had a SYSTEM to help him, he could score better. Those words hold so much wisdom in a lot of different things. A lot of times, the systems fail hard working people, it doesn't mean they didn't put in effort.
