What is Schottky Diode:
The Schottky diode is a two terminal device which works similar to the diode but has some unique features.
1) Low Forward Voltage Drop (Typically 0.3 V to 0.5V)
2) Small Reverse Recovery Time
Due to its Low Forward Voltage Drop, it is used in the high power applications. (High current and relatively low power applications)
And due to its small reverse recovery time, it is used in the fast switching applications (e.g SMPS, communication devices (RF mixer and detector circuits)
The limitations of Schottky Diode:
1. High reverse Leakage Current
2. Low Peak Inverse Voltage (PIV)
Construction of the Schottky Diode:
The Schottky Diode is fabricated using the metal and the semiconductor.
The semiconductor material used to be an n-type material. (Although p-type material can be used, mostly n-type is preferred material)
And metals like Chrome, Molybdenum etc. are used as the metal.
The Schottky diode is unique in the sense that the flow of current is due to one charge carrier as there is no minority charge carrier. And hence it is a unipolar device.
And due to the absence of the minority charge carrier, the reverse recovery time of the diode is very small. That's why it can be used in the fast switching applications.
