In my opinion he has the perfect voice for this piece; the best so far of the recordings I heard.

I have tears in my eyes yet I have certainty, because I know that if it wasn't for classical music I would be a very different man today

Прекрасный бас баритон Мr. Gerald Finley! Очарованы его исполнением и считаем его эталонным исполнителем классических музыкальных произведений! Браво оркестру и композитору вечно живой музыки!

This is so beautiful. Gerald Finley has been one of my favorite baritones of all times and this has me crying a little bit - good crying. Us musicians (both professional and amateurs) will understand the meaning of the lyrics of course and also the beauty of the music. Thank you so much Berlin Philarmoniker.

Wonderful. I had a friend (now sadly passed) who used to play that. She learnt it from the Braille score. Although I did love the orchestral arrangement, I think if I heard Mr Finley sing that with only the piano I would cry.

At least three comments explained why they dislike this "orchestral transcriptions," with one claiming the virtue of "less is more". I disagree. Of course I love the original piano accompaniment version just like anyone else, but the substance or essence of any piece of artistic creation can hold in virtually any other guise of articulation. A diamond's brilliance can be appreciated from any angle of viewing it. Nowadays no one objects to a performance of Shakespeare's "King Lear," for example, using modern technological trappings, costumes, and female characters (versus boys playing female roles in Shakespeare's day). Chopin played on "his" forte-piano (or pianoforte) is more like a nostalgic curiosity than being faithful to Chopin. Beethoven would have much preferred that his 32 piano sonatas be played on a modern Steinway concert grand. So I welcome and appreciate this orchestral accompaniment version. Schubert would have loved it (if not amused by it). Thank you, Reger, Harding, and Finley, for making this version available to Schubert lovers.

Thank YOU for your true and reasonable comment! My quibbles: I don't think modern instruments and performance practice improve the composition, but certainly give me a new and perfectly respectable way to hear it. Eg: I hate Mozart on orig perf/ pract, but love it for Beethoven!

This is a nice adaptation. However, the Lied is much more beautiful with the piano accompaniment, where the left hand plays rhythmically the bass chords.

Lovely. Different from the piano. Would Schubert have written an orchestral accompaniment to An Die Musik if he'd been commissioned it? Heck ya! Is this recording superior to piano? No. It's certainly not the best, but does that make it bad? Let's not be elitist. Let's remember that if music was a country, this would be it's national anthem.

Beautifully sung. Alas, these orchestral transcriptions of Schubert Lieder simply do not work. Often less is more.

Agree. The tight voicing and heavy rubato just can’t be replicated in something other than a piano.

I agree. The extraordinary genius of Schubert I find here in the scarcity of piano tones that resonate in my heart. A perfect complement to the single melody. No additional sounds will add to the MUSIK content of this composition.

I was delighted to find this - Gerald Finley is my absolutely favorite baritone ( i think there never was and will never be a better Figaro) - but, 5 seconds in, i developed a very strong dislike for this rendition. I can't tell is he keeping his voice down, not wanting to actually sing, or is he just trying to keep in pitch (and well under the volume) of the orchestra... whatever it is, in my ears, something is wrong with this
