It was during my time at Ellesmere that this wonderful instrument was rescued and installed there. I had the privilege of watching it being rebuilt, between lessons of course! In retrospect, I'm sure that we should give a nod of respect to David Skipper, the Headmaster at the time, for his enthusiasm and foresight that saved this superb instrument from the scrap heap.

And me too... Of course Richard will know that we were contemporaries, no, good friends, at Ellesmere. It would be good to catch up again! The Schultze is magnificent too!

I got there a few years later in 1987. Was the mezzanine in Big School built for the organ or was it there with something else on it previously?
@chrisashley6611
@chrisashley6611 Год назад
@@petersharp90Hi Peter. A contemporary here from Ellesmere College - long time, no hear! To answer your question, the mezzanine was specially built for the organ when it was re-installed at the College. Listening to this video brings back some happy memories learning to play both this and the Chapel organ. All best wishes, Chris Ashley (Derry 1985-1992)

@@chrisashley6611 Hi Chris, Thanks for the message. I remember we had Lower Sixth form studies opposite each other in that cruddy building. Prior to that the dayboys and the boarders kept pretty separate lives. I remember you playing the organ, and the oldest Carew brother (wasn't he the head of school?). And Chris Durant used to play it.

You are not only a superbly talented musician, you are an educator, inspiring and fast making yourself a national treasure. I hope you realise how much you have helped people like me survive life through 2020. Thank you both for your hard work and supreme talents.

Have you heard his Louis Vierne - Final from Symphony No.1 Op.14 performed on the historic Schulze organ of Ellesmere College, Shropshire UK two years ago? It does sound very good, so I am really looking forward to the new concert. He also played Mozart's "Eine kleine nachtmusik" but that was on the1968 Hill, Norman & Beard Chapel Organ of Ellesmere College Chapel organ at Ellesmere College 2 yrs ago. Splendid stuff.

What a wonderful recital we have been treated to this evening. Excellent programme, virtuosic playing as always- and superb recording and photography by Tom. I was surprised at how well the Schulze sounded - a great tribute to the 4 organ builders who have recently worked on it. Console looked immaculate.

Is there anyone other than me that appreciates the way that Jonathan almost always introduces a slightly less know piece of music into his concerts. Given that we can (and do) listen to each new concert several times, we then get to know these new pieces in a way that we probably wouldn't if we were to attend a physical concert. For me, the last two concerts have included such pieces....Will O' the Wisp by Gordon Balch Nevin and Toccata in F by Grison. I wonder if this concert will have such a piece.

Thank you Jonathan once again for a great concert, introducing us to another intriguing venue, instrument, beautiful scores and context. You're right, the unique voicing of this original organ came through immediately in the videography, selection of music, and registrations. And the simple design of the great hall is the perfect setting to pronounce the uniqueness, not diminished by muddled reverb of a cavernous church interior. The tragic story of Bizet, the recreation of Mendelssohn's Sonata No. 3, the silly, fun Funeral March of a Marionette. Everything was an amazing colourful programme perfectly paired with the instrument. And Tom, your Marionette animation video is classic. Well done! Looking forward to the college chapel concert.

@@epincion I lean towards leaving a comment after I've actually heard something. So here goes: It was absolutely fabulous! The choice of pieces and the performances of them were outstanding. An immensely enjoyable recital. Excuse my facetiousness, but sometimes I wonder what sort of "musicians" we have getting involved here. Many Victorian organs were tuned a semitone sharp (compared with present day concert pitch). Interestingly, Hymns A&M published a transposed edition with the tunes in keys a semitone lower than in their first standard edition, and have continued to do so for all editions since for the benefit of organists, choirs, and congregations.
