The Davidsbündlertänze, Op. 6, are a two-part piano cycle by Robert Schumann, each consisting of nine character pieces. Schumann wrote 19 pieces, the last of which remains incomplete. The work was composed in the two months following his engagement to Clara Wieck on August 14, 1837. In the first piece, he quotes a motif from the Mazurka No. 5 from her Soirées musicales Op. 6 in the Motto of C. W. He speaks to her of wedding thoughts, which he has incorporated into the pieces. To his friend Carl Montag, however, he spoke of “death dances, St. Vitus’ dances, dances of graces and goblins”. Schumann’s pseudonyms Florestan and Eusebius also play an important role here. The two characters symbolize his dual role in the fictitious Davidsbund, which also gives this cycle its name. Florestan is the “roaring, exuberant stormtrooper”. Eusebius represents the opposite pole as “the gentle youth who always remains modestly in the background”. In the first edition, the plays are either titled “Florestan and Eusebius” or just one of the two names.
The Davidsbündler were a fictitious circle of living and deceased artists founded by Robert Schumann in 1833. The living met regularly in the Leipzig pub Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum. In contrast to the circle named the “Philistines”, they called themselves Davidsbündler. In the tradition of the secret societies that were very popular at the time, all members had imaginary names. Schumann, the most important Davidsbündler, often called himself Jeanquirit or Julius. He gave Clara Wieck, his later wife, who never took part in the Davidsbündler events, the name Zilia or Chiara or Chiarina. He called Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Meritis.
The name Davidsbündler already appears in Schumann’s first musical essay Die Davidsbündler, which he published in the magazine Der Komet in December 1833. The continuation of these “Davidsbündler” fantasies can then be found in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik (NZfM), which Schumann founded in April 1834. The patron saint of the Davidsbündler was the biblical David, the crowned singer and conqueror of the giant Philistine Goliath. They pursued the goal of turning away from old, conservative standpoints and opening up new paths for the artistic forms of music and art. The Davidsbund and its members repeatedly played a role in Schumann’s works, in the Davidsbündlertänze Op. 6, of course, as well as in Carnaval Op. 9 and in the Piano Sonata in F sharp minor Op. 11.
Tiffany Poon was born in Hong Kong in 1996. She started piano lessons when she was four. At age nine she moved to New York, where she attended the Juilliard School Pre-College program. Tiffany Poon made her concert debut at age 10. She graduated from high school in 2014 and continued her piano studies as part of the exchange program between Columbia University and The Juilliard School. She also studied philosophy and in 2018 graduated from Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts. Today she performs around the world, sometimes with an orchestra, sometimes solo. In 2017 she started a new project with the help of RU-vid - to present her more human side, as well as her classical music. She has a great social media presence, with 320,000 followers on RU-vid alone. And she also engages with the community. Tiffany Poon’s non-profit charity “Together with Classical” supports musicians in their training and brings together classical music lovers from all over the world. Her new album with works by Robert Schumann "Diaries: Schumann" will be available from 9 February 2024.

I don’t know what is exactly, but when I hear the music of Robert Schumann, it moves every time, especially when it is played in the way Tiffany does. I have the strong feeling that she understands Schumann’s music. Everything is there: extreme joy, deep melancholy, clarity and above all love for his music and his personality.

Such maturity. I hear a lot of young pianists in Berlin. Rarely are their ideas this worked out. Best of luck in 2024. Hope to see Poon more out and about. She deserves all the recognition the public can give her.

Some wonderful playing here. What I like about her interpretations of Schumann's work is that she keeps it simple and straightforward with very little, if any, affectation while bringing out the beauty, tenderness and exuberance in his music.

Brilliant playing! I studied the Davidsbündlertänzer years ago, but I never dared to perform the whole work in convert, only excerpts. I found some pieces very difficult, such number 6. The left hand passages are ridiculously hard to play well at speed. Tiffany plays with amazing virtuosity and never sounds artificial or over the top.

Tiffany brings a feminine touch to Schumann's pieces as if approaching from the viewpoint of Clara Schumann. She has affinity to this composer and is very good; but I will be sticking to Arrau, Kempff, Lupu, Cortot's recordings.

Sorry, the music and its harmonies are completely lost in this interpretation, e.g. in No. 6, which is played far too quickly and completely rushed. The character is lost. Take a masterclass with Andras Schiff or Delphine Lizé, who plays this piece quite magically. No. 8 is also terrible, you almost don't hear the dissonances that make this dance so incredibly exciting.

You are a bit high-pitched in critique; you prefer a different interpretation, which is fine for you. But perusing the score, Tiffany does fine; no masterclass necessary...i
@bodogreiner1536
@bodogreiner1536 6 месяцев назад
@@bloodgrss Her style is simply the competition unity style, in which the music of different composers all sounds the same. If you have the scores, have a look, e.g. in No. 6: the dynamics go from p (at the beginning, I don't hear it, it starts mf) to fff (I don't hear it either, no drama either, it's simply not possible at the tempo at which she chases it down). Have a look at Andras Schiff's masterclass on the piece here on RU-vid, you'll find out what's in No. 6 on the part of the composer.
@bloodgrss
@bloodgrss 6 месяцев назад
I admire Schiff, but he lacks any strong pianistic voice; his Mozart concertos with Vegh are among the best, but most critical assessment would have voted for a more characterful pianist for example. You laud him; so be it. As far as sticking most strictly to your interpretation of the score and her tempo choices, to each his own. I am not advocating for Poon, but it seems to me her play is far from 'competition unity style', a rather unnecessary ad hominem somewhat irrelevant and biased. Schiff has been accused of such in some of his play. As for performances of the Davidsbündlertänze, of the more modern pianists, I prefer Murray Perahia. In following the score with him there are choices you would seemingly decry too; what can we say?@@bodogreiner1536

To be honest, the interpretation lacks deepness, contrast. It felt like dancing on eggshells. I always thought of Schumann music as very dramatic and full of contrast
