It has been brought to my attention that I made a huge mistake. I must have misplaced a comma on my data sheet I made for the ringworld. I repeatedly say (and its even in the thumbnail) that the ringworld is 30 million times the area of earth. It is actually *only* 3 million times. My apologies for the error.
I’m not writer, but it would be interesting if they came up with a ringworld prequel about before the meteor crash, through the ringworld, and created the fist of God. Also there was civilization before it was wiped out. Make it like a disaster story of that event. Title the story called Ringworld, The Birth Of Fist of God or something. It would be interesting 😎
I also want to thank you for the Ringworld videos. It has been decades since I read the Ringworld novels. You videos bring back so much that I have forgotten about the novel. Please continue the series about Ringworld in Larry Nevin's other novels.
Why would ring world need to spin? Perhaps to stabilize itself with its star and to have night & day cycles with blocking plates.. Certainly not for gravity. As mass of planet size slice of Ringworld, wiht its core Skrim, then natural rock strata, sand, dirt, and water would produce local gravity sufficiently close to 1G Earth. The core structure is likely 6-8 billion years(Earth objective) old, with rock strata harvested from planets originally in the star system. Various life forms would be deposited by various means, evolve naturally, and colonized by successive spacefaring civilizations, across epochs of time.
The Ringworld books are among the best stories I've ever read, but I have to say that part about breeding for luck was utterly disappointing but I stuck with the story and was abundantly rewarded.
Yeah, I think it rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Thankfully its not really an aspect of the sequels iirc. I'll be re reading them soon to make a video on them so I'll address that if so. Protector-Teela even walks it back a bit I believe.
Thank you man, classic sci-fi is not easy to come by on youtube. If you keep up that quality and upload schedule I think your channel can get really big, at least by classic sci-fi standards ;)
TY! I'm already really happy with my channel's growth. I do this for fun because I love sci fi after all. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't mind it growing even more! lol.
Thank you so much! this is amazing for a big fan of this awe inspiring book for forty years. The illustrations are beautiful and remarkably accurate to the story
Just finished listening to Ringworld as an audibook, and this was a good refresher on all its events. Some bits stayed vague to me because of the complexity described in the book, so this also helped me understand some things I previously was left unsure on. For example, I must've forgotten or even missed that their ship was ever called The Lying Bastard, and thought they were calling it the Lyre instead of the Liar this whole time hahahah. Great summaries, man, looking forward to more of these from you for sure. Also glad that you left out all the worst of Niven's bizarre bits of writing.. ie everything in Ringworld reflecting his misogyny and horniness LOL. There was really a lot. Kind of comes through even just in his worldbuilding, with how reproduction works for Puppeteers and Kzin alike.. And of course.. The Pak Protectors middle life cycle just being 'breeders'....... Reading about Louis and Teela's (as well as his and Pril's) relationship became really insufferable at times. Niven's worldbuilding is unmatched. His freaky views on women? Also unmatched. lmao.
Like even the fact Teela and Louis were a thing at all was gross. He was 10x her age!! He literally said so himself, and referred to her as a child or childish many times!! Yikes, Niven!! Not to mention how truly mentally a child she was compared to 200 year old Louis.... Aaaahhh!
