Steve goes through his recent acquisitions, 'unhauls' some books in Hay-On Wye (will Gay On Wye Bookshop be open this time?) and fills gaps in a couple of series. The (un)usual book haul of diverse literary items, many of the SFnal kind..

Great stuff Steve. The Joe Millard westerns aren't too Bad tbh. What a great jacket on that Picador🙂

Yes, I read several of the Millards back in the 70s- last night I nabbed 'A Coffin Full of Dollars' (which I haven't read for at least 42 years) and 'The Devil's Dollar SIgn' (which I didn't read at the time) on ebay last night for under £12 the pair. Cracking!

Always a selection of interesting and beautiful books Steve . I really enjoyed reading those three moorcock and the western is something I particularly enjoyed as a teen and fist full of dollars was a favourite . Roma eterna is one I picked up last year but not read yet love all things silverberg and PKD . Top quality as ever thanks.

Good video, very enjoyable. Many thanks. I also am a big Eric Brown fan, pity he passed last year. A great talent. I wrote an article review of his Bengal Station trilogy a few years ago and was happy to hear from him that he thought i was someone who got those books right as sf noir. A very talented writer who was also very entertaining. All best to you!

Enjoy the collecting diary - more days out and about with your travels please - such a nice way to see other parts of the world through the eyes of a collector. Really makes me want to book a trip to see what the UK has to offer. As a new collector I visited a seaside town here in AUS and explored a bookshop hadn't been to and found some nice vintage SF (new to me). Would like to think in a small way embracing the 'book life' you mention. One of my fav videos in awhile thanks for sharing Steve.

Thanks. I like shooting outdoors, but this country has appalling weather about 75% of the time, is noisy and crowded as it is so small- but I'll be aiming to capture those elusive good days when I can this spring/early summer. Do watch my Capri, Italy and Paris videos, which are stuffed with literary references.

A very nice haul. 🤩 I only read Helliconia Spring by Aldiss and it wasn't quite my thing. This looks interesting. Haven't heard of this one by Le Guin. She is my favourite SF writer. That novel with PKD in the title looks so cool. Happy reading 👋

You are so right about Green Shadows, White Whale. I do have the HarperCollins hardback you mentioned briefly (lovely splashy blue and white leaping whale on the cover) but the foxing on the topmost text block is a heartbreaker. But it is what it is, as you are fond of saying...

I appreciated the UFO Interceptor peeking out while you were displaying the Moorcocks. Hard to believe the series is more than 50 years old and still holds up. You must keep going back to Hay if only to finally enter the now mythical Gay On Wye shop. I was going to say how do they stay open but clearly, they don't!

I too have that very same paperback edition of Keith Roberts's _The Boat of Fate._ 😍 Got it last year from (shock! 😳 horror! 😱) World of Books. And in pretty good condition too. 👍 Right now, they still have a copy left for £3.49 in 'very good' condition.

I actually met the artist of The Steel Tsar at the Glasgow world con in 2005. Lovely fella. And I saw the original artwork as well which was a thrill. I also saw the original art of The Crimson King from The Dark Tower by Stephen King. Rather sadly I’ll not attend the next Glasgow worldcon, I am saving for retirement next year and can’t justify the expense

Cons are worth avoiding now, not just for the cost. The 'woke factor; is turned up to 11, as is the self-aggrandizement of the self-published nepotists out there. Just take a look at their conduct guidelines, you'd be afraid to speak to anyone....

Yeah, always the Three Tuns. The Blue Boar is a dreadful pub, overpriced, food overrated and the staff...well, say no more. Good food at the Three and it's been beautifully restored in recent years.

So odd I was just thinking about the Silverberg Roma Eterna because it’s one that sits on my shelf and one of the only later Silverberg that I own. Five minutes before you mentioned it I was thinking of it and then you pull it up. I guess we may be reading it at the same time.

Another great episode Stephen, so many great books. Stephen, do you know of any other authors/books that are written in the cut-up style of Burroughs during his cut-up period? I've read Alan Burns, Ann Quin, and Carl Weissner's "The Braille Film" and thought there must have been a lot of books out there but it seems there wasn't. Cheers.
@outlawbookselleroriginal
@outlawbookselleroriginal 3 месяца назад
I've never found many cut up/fold in novels/stories to be honest- I think you've nailed some key ones there (I like Burns and Quin, who is enjoying a small revival). There are things which are Burroughsian in tone of course, but with sometimes different concerns, like the later novels of Trevor Hoyle and Martin Bax phenomenal 'The Hospital Ship'. I'd say Ballard's 'The Atrocity Exhibition' is closed, but it's condensed- it feels as if sections are removed and pared down, but I'm sure you know this book.

Which shop in Hay-on-Wye has the largest selection of science fiction books?
@outlawbookselleroriginal
@outlawbookselleroriginal 3 месяца назад
I'd say Addyman's - it's also the best by far. Cinema Bookshop has a lot too. Richard Booth used to be pretty good but is awful now- but remember, when you're buying second hand, the bookshops' stock is subject to chance far more than a shop stocking new books. Now, even these shops have a lot of new SF too.

Do you think it's worth it for me to make a trip to Hay on Wye festival next year from the States? I haven't been to England in 25 years...
@outlawbookselleroriginal
@outlawbookselleroriginal 3 месяца назад
First of all, Hay is in Wales, not England- though one residential part of it creeps over the border. You should avoid the Hay festival like the plague- it happens in May and November- as it has dumbed the town down enormously from being a world class second hand book destination to a place dominated by the chattering classes and their obvious bestsellers. Go outside these seasons to get the real flavour- it is also horribly crowded during the fest. It's a tiny village, after all. Go monday-wednesday outside of UK schooll holidays is best. You will need a car to get there, as by public transport is tough as it is miles from anywhere and there is no nearby railway station. Let me know if you need any detailed guidance.
@leakybootpress9699
@leakybootpress9699 3 месяца назад
An enjoyable troll around Hay as always, Steve, but I find its almost total demise as a place for serious book collectors quite dispiriting. I have a question for you: How many times should we buy and dispose of a book before we decide to keep a copy for good? I'm sure there's a mathematical formula to calculate the answer. I’m the same as you, buy sell, buy again, but without even the excuse of lager brain.
@outlawbookselleroriginal
@outlawbookselleroriginal 3 месяца назад
It really is on the way out. I give it five years max because of Green Ink, Cinema, The Poetry Bookshop and Addyman, but it's a little like a white dwarf that will collapse into a singularity. I hope to be offloading my excess there for another few years yet. And the lack of decent lager doesn't help! Having said all this, I'm wondering how much I can realistically let go again in terms of bulk, not much, I think.... On the other point, we dispose of it once, then rebuy. I don't think I've rid myself of (m)any titles and rebought them more than once- and where I have, when I've ditched the second copy, it's never been purchased again.....
