Episode 42. Science Fiction feat. Helen de Cruz
Would you willingly plug yourself into an experience-simulating machine such as The Matrix? What would happen to society if robots suddenly became conscious? What would you do if, for some reason, you encountered an utterly alien life form? Many of us first ponder big philosophical questions such as these through exposure to science fiction stories in books or movies. In episode 42, Ellie and David explore the power of sci-fi. After considering the origins of this genre, they interview Dr. Helen De Cruz, an expert on the philosophy of science fiction, about how our brains process sci-fi stories differently than other speculative narratives, including philosophical thought experiments!
Overthink is a philosophy podcast hosted by your favorite new professors, Ellie Anderson (Pomona College) and David Peña-Guzmán (San Francisco State University). Check out our episodes for deep dives into concepts such as existential anxiety, empathy, and gaslighting.

The Terminator, The Matrix, and iRobot made me curios about technological advancements but also critical of excess advancements in technology in fear that the dystopian worlds, in the films, could become reality,

At 18:50 you state that for Chiang, fantasy is non-egalitarian because the hero has magical powers. But in Lord of the Rings, the hero Frodo and his friends are everyman characters. Frodo's job is to take a magic item (and one that inspires fear, not awe) that he inherits, and destroy it, not use it. Another famous fantasy character, Conan the barbarian, has no magic powers, and fights against magic and the supernatural. So Chiang's definition seems flawed.

1:40 - I was born in the early 90's but did watch the entire trilogy before turning 13. It could have been that I was exposed to more intellectual content at a younger age including a various rap songs that are more philosophical than the typical content. My cousin, only 2 years older than me, also saw it and is philosophically inspired by it.
