A healthy work limit is 39 hours per week, study shows
medicalxpress.com/news/2017-0...
"People who work more than 39 hours a week are putting their health at risk, new research from The Australian National University (ANU) has found.The research shows the work limit for a healthy life should be set at 39 hours a week instead of the 48-hour-week limit set internationally about 80 years ago."
Does Working from Home Work? Evidence from a Chinese Experiment
www.nber.org/papers/w18871
"We report the results of a WFH experiment at CTrip, a 16,000- employee, NASDAQ-listed Chinese travel agency. Call center employees who volunteered to WFH were randomly assigned to work from home or in the office for 9 months. Home working led to a 13% performance increase, of which about 9% was from working more minutes per shift (fewer breaks and sick-days) and 4% from more calls per minute (attributed to a quieter working environment)."
Long Work Hours Linked to Higher Risk for Cardiovascular Disease
www.cbia.com/news/hr-safety/l...
"Working long hours-particularly 46 hours per week or more-may increase the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events such as heart attack. That's the conclusion of a study in the March Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, official publication of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine."

That was obvious we work 8hours +1/2 for eating +time to get to work. Yes you arent working when eating but You are still there rushing to eat. So technically that is 11-12 hours wasted at work and going to it. Now when u add the 8 Minimal hours for a nights rest its 12+8 hours where u cant do whatever activity u want to enjoy life. So we have 4hours out of 24 for ourselves , BUT most of those are used to rest because you just came home after leaving it 11 hours ago in the morning. This i believe is very wrong and should be fixed. Heck if i have close to no time for myself and only work and rest from work , WHAT is even the point of staying alive? This isn't living ! its just surviving day after day after day.

Amen to that. I work a 40 hour job myself with occasional mandatory overtime. I also have depression and have noticed that it does get worse the more I work. During peak months where I am working mandatory 50 and 60 hour weeks I also deal with a significant increase in how depressed I get. During normal 40 hour weeks I feel a lot of anxiety and depression. This month we have had an abnormal amount of time off to be volunteered for so I took what I could get driving my work week down to around 25-30 hours a week and I have never felt better, I eat better, get more done at home, spend quality time with my wife, and over all feel more together. Not to mention that when I work those 50-60 hour weeks I have significantly more frequent thoughts of suicide, My relationship with my wife suffers, I lose touch with friends and can't find any joy in anything I normally enjoy doing. Compound this with the low wages not meeting the cost of living adding more stress in the mix. Quality of life doesn't exist if all you do is work. Thing is it's not an easy fix. I really wish I could just bring this video to the CEOs of the company I work for and they would work everyone less hours and raise our pay to at least make up for the adjustment but they would probably just laugh in my face, call me a peasant, and kick me out the door. They don't care about anything unless there is hard evidence it will make a profit. Going to the government is even worse because half the people are in the pocket of those CEOs. It's frustrating that something that effects so many lives is so hard to change because it only affects the middle and lower classes. Who cares if the poor think of suicide or aren't eating well right? Guess if you don't have a ton of skill/luck/cash you don't deserve to live a decent life is the message of our times right?

I don't see why we should pay the President's a full salary when they leave the office. They should only receive a partial salary for only half-the number of years they were in office. Just like any other job you retire from. Then they wouldn't have to take so much money from the tax payers. We all might could at least have part of a life. Anyone else agree?

Problem is many people don't have a choice. And even if they go to college they may realize too late the job they're going for is not for them. Or they like a job that doesn't pay enough to support their family so they do a different job that they don't enjoy but will support their family.
@therealDannyVasquez
@therealDannyVasquez 7 лет назад
This is so true, J. People who have skills but aren't utilizing them with their work tend to suffer the worst. This trick is to realize that to live a fulfilling life, what you do for work should be at the center of everything. Once you find what you're passionate about and have a 30-40 year goal (a goal you will never achieve in your lifetime is best), connect with a team of people who are also passionate about that same goal and work with them. They become more than just colleagues; they are more like family. When you have this, you could be sleeping in a tent, eating ramen noodles and you'd still wake up excited everyday for the rest of your life.
@davidbyrne7741

A major problem with most of the worlds education systems, is that they don't aim to educate for the sake of knowledge but are actually designed to get people into the labor force. Not incredibly terrible but its ridiculous to expect 20 year olds to know what they want to do for the rest of their lives, most of the time, as they are under the stress of whatever final year exams they have.
@BlueSkies30
@BlueSkies30 7 лет назад
It doesn't matter to the system though. Whether you know what you want to do at 20 or 50 years old, every job needs a person to fill it at the end of the day. I think it is safe to say majority of people would not want to be a garbage man for life, but someone has to do it. You can go for your dream job of nurse or lawyer or mechanic but if the positions are all filled up that's that. Find something less pleasing to do. So whether the system gives you time to figure out what you want to do or not, in the end it depends on job availability.

The 40 hour work week is a dinosaur. It came about from people wanting to give factory workers a break from longer and more grueling working hours. That was a fine idea when it came about around 100 years ago but times change. It’s too bad society keeps insisting on using this outdated model just because of tradition. That and the ridiculous notion of “hard work pays off”...for who? And at what price?

I feel this! After a struggle with my health it was not an option to working my usual 50+ hour work week. It drove me insane at first, but after being very strategic, I managed to cut my hours down to 20 HOURS A WEEK (🤯 ) and still get everything done. It's funny how much you can get done when pushed out of your comfort zone. Like Parkinson's Law: “Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.” Give yourself realistic deadlines. But also make yourself work. Push yourself and see what happens when you get outside your comfort zone and get it done.

In a prior job for a well known US public university I had a period of mandated 14 hour days plus weekend work due to a project being behind schedule. It was work where clear thinking was vital, though, and that schedule accomplished the opposite. For the months where I worked that I figure I had probably 5-6 days of actual productivity; the rest was lost to mistakes that were due to being exhausted all the time (each mistake cost 10-24 hours of work.) Worse, as we were salaried in that department the long hours meant no extra pay. I do listen to music at work, both at that job and my current. The reason has a lot to do with it being in office spaces where there is a lot of other chatter and music is less distracting to me.

Luckily, there are still places and companies in this world that offer 38 hours / week for full wages (as per industry wage agreements), 30 days off, partly flextime, only overtime in extreme workload situations. I work in one of those companies and love the working conditions, although work itself can be stressful at times, of course. I can pay all my bills and still have a small amount of money left. :)

It's a personal choice, if you want to work less, then move to the cheaper place, where the expenses are lower and there is less requirements to earn. We all would like to work less, but the expenses are pushing us to work more. The people in other countries will not stop working, the only way to compete is to automate parts of the job and make the workers more efficient at what they do, so that they can go home earlier.

I work in customer service. Just try spending 8 hours a day dealing with the expectations of others not being met. No less than 18 people a day will have some kind of complaint against my company or myself. 90% of those complaints I have no control over. The last complaint I got (3 minutes after my work day "ended") was from a customer who complained that someone he knew had her car vandalized when parked on the street in front of the building. Our cameras don't monitor the street, they monitor the building and the employees inside the building. I asked him how I could help, and he said that we should lower our prices because of the lack of "service." 40 hours a week of that shit. People call me to complain that UPS left their package in the wrong place. People call me to complain that there isn't enough parking nearby. People call me to complain about road construction. I'm like, "I really don't know how I can help with this issue."

A problem that I've had in the US is the cookie-cutter approach to work hours and expectations in entry-level jobs. I'm developmentally disabled and have a history of mental illness; historically working more than 22 hours per week has landed me in hospitals, additionally the stigma against disabled employees has made it so I couldn't get minor modifications to work hours without legal leverage.

I wouldn't want to work more than 60 hours a week. Think about it- five 12 hour days (not including breaks) barely gives you enough time to sleep during the week. You're up at 7AM, work from 8AM to 9PM (with 2 half hour breaks) sleep from 10 to 7AM, no personal time at ALL during the week, and people work even 90 or more hours sometimes, that's crazy.
