All the products in the SIS Beta Fuel Range
In this video I review all the products in the new SIS Beta Fuel Range. In theory they could be a fantastic range of carbohydrate supplements for racing, whether you're a runner, triathlete or focus on another sport.
There are the beta fuel chews, the standard beta fuel gel and the beta fuel with nootropics, and the beta fuel 80 powder. As a group of products they give you fantastic versatility and so could be a perfect option for those wanting to just stick with one product.
However, I have some issues which I cover in this video because I don't think they're perfect. I hope this might give you some food for thought for race day nutrition, to help you race faster. Whether that's racing a faster marathon, ironman triathlon or a cycling race.
Carbs for racing are super important and these are a great source of carbs to help with your nutrition for race day. This science in sport beta fuel review should give you the info that you need!

What's your favourite sports nutrition product? Are there any you would like me to review?

That’s for the video. Interesting product especially the chew! Would be interested to see the OTE range - they have a gel which packs 40g which pretty tasty but will defo give the beta fuel chews a go.

OTE is a good idea, I'll look into reviewing their products at some point! I haven't used any of their stuff for a while so would be interested to see where they're at. Defo give the beta fuel chews a go, I suspect you won't be disappointed!

Hugely informative as always. Unless a health professional says otherwise lack of sodium is rarely a problem, especially training in Northern Europe even during the warmer months. If you’re a pro and train in excess of 20 hours a week during The hottest months of the year in a place like Phoenix, Baton Rouge or Dhaka it would be different There is so much salt added to packaged foods that in Western diets we easily get our daily requirements and probably consume too much. Adding regular extra table salt to drinks and foods will likely make you more thirsty. As any high school chemistry student knows, table salt only contains 40% sodium anyway. Keep up the great work!

Hey, thank you for the comment! I'd disagree with you here though. Whilst I would agree that there is a lot of [unnecessary] added salt to packaged/processed food and that the average person in the Western world consumed too much salt, that's not who beta fuel is aimed, and nor do I think that comment is true when it comes to the average endurance enthusiast. I'm not aware of any data that looks specifically at dietary sodium intake in an average endurance athlete, but I suspect it's lower than or close to the daily recommended amounts. From an anecdotal point of view, every athlete I've worked with has already made steps to improve their diet and by nature this will mean less processed food and salt. Secondly, it's simply not true that only pros doing 20 hours in excess of 20 hours a week in the hottest places would need added salt. Even your average endurance athlete exercising 5 hours per week may benefit from added salt around exercise. This depends on personal factors like sweat rate and electrolyte concentration in the sweat, climate and duration of exercise. But to make a general statement that it's not needed is wrong, in my opinion. It can help significantly with performance and recovery when used correctly. Again, anecdotal here from athletes I've worked with, but many do far better with more sodium around exercise.

The advantage of not having any sodium in the Beta Fuel 80 drink is that you can add the specific amount of electrolytes you need depending on how much salt you lose through sweat, as that is very individual.

Yep, definitely! But I think it creates a barrier for a lot of people of "what do I do" or they don't take any sodium at all - which is an issue! So it has its pros and cons, for sure 🙂

I've used all three in this line and really like them, the gels are so, so easy to put down due to how low viscosity, the blocks are pretty good tasting and easily consumed on the fly. the drink mix really seems to give me a boast, and I use it in between a bottle with a typical sodium content mix, usually e-fuel from cranksports, which has been my favorite line for a while, instead of plain water. But I only use them on longer, harder rides as both lines cost to much for those short, everyday rides..
@NutritionTriathlon
@NutritionTriathlon 10 месяцев назад
Yep, definitely too expensive for an everyday product! Cool to hear you've got on well with it though, especially combining it with other products like an electrolyte mix

Beta 80 Fuel Drink used to contain salt, but it seems it was taken out in the new formulation. Seems strange to do that. I'm also not really sure how they can claim it's isotonic if it contains zero electrolytes.

James, what are your thoughts on Tailwind? Its my nutrition of choice and seems to cover all the bases including sodium
@NutritionTriathlon
@NutritionTriathlon 2 года назад
So I've heard a lot of athletes say good things about tailwind, but I've never tried it myself. My issue is that I contacted them and asked for a bit more info on their ratio of maltodextrin:fructose and they wouldn't tell me. Said their precise mixture is what makes it so effective so wouldn't disclose it. Although it's probably fine, that and the fact that they're not batch tested makes me feel a bit uncomfortable recommending it.

@@NutritionTriathlon Thats such a shame but I can totally understand that recommending a product without the full facts is a dangerous game. Seems to work for me so I guess that's the important thing :-)

Someone clearly asked Torq Energy why their products still run 2:1 on the carb ratio. There's a long answer on their website, but the gist is that the 1:0.8 ratio was only beneficial to the very elite athletes. And that there was nothing to suggest that the rest of us would actually benefit from it. They also say that the "hydrogel" (Maurten) thing doesn't actually show any evidence that it works the way Maurten claim in reducing GI. Now, one might say "well they would say that wouldn't they" But at least they have an opinion and are willing to share it. I used to live on Torq products. Fuelled my 2 IMs on them. But went off them a bit as I got frustrated by the sweetness. Surprisingly they aren't part of the "Informed Sport" program but do claim to have their products tested by WADA labs

Torq have an excellent reputation and I know many who have used them successfully. What they say might be true, however the evidence does suggest that a 1:0.8 ratio seems to be better. The question is how much difference this actually makes for the everyday person - which is tricky to know. Whilst I think the 1:0.8 might be superior, I would say it's far more important to just be in the right ballpark with your race nutrition and do that properly. The rest is finessing, and if it ain't broke - don't fix! As for the Maurten claims, I used to say the same as there was a review of the papers which suggested no benefit compared to standard liquid carb preps. However, there was an independent study that came out by Joshua Rowe which suggested hydrogels did cause lower GI distress in runners. Would be great to see some more studies on it!

I use SIS isotonic energy gels and the SIS isotonic with caffeine. And they work pretty well for me. Have completed 2x70.3 and 1x140.6 so far fueling with those ones and didn’t have any GI problem and didn’t suffer of fatigue or dehydration. For the long one I also had some Nakd date bars and a couple of small sandwiches with cheese and Turkey for the ride, to have some solid food and change the flavors. I never tried the SIS Beta, maybe I should give it a try.

@NutritionTriathlon 2 года назад
Giving beta fuel a try definitely isn't a bad idea as it is good stuff! But I would also just consider whether it's really worth it for you. If you're getting on OK currently, no issues, then maybe it isn't worth changing. Sure it probably is a little bit 'better' but sometimes it's better to just stick with what you know 🙂
