What is a drummer’s groove? According to Adam Gust, it’s achieving “feeling fluency,” and both art and science are behind the process. As the only Polyvagal-Informed professional drummer, Adam has devoted years to understanding how the nervous system impacts his ability to perform-how mind, body, and feeling work together to create results. He shares an exercise he uses to coordinate all three. Adam Gust is the only Polyvagal-Informed professional drummer in the world. Adam focuses on identifying what happens when drummers find their “groove,” synchronizing brain/body and thought/feeling. Gust has hosted drum workshops at the Musicians Institute and performance workshops at the University of Southern California. He creates unique drum video content. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Deeply moving, emotionally and physically - if you drum along with the exercise he plays at the end 😊 Who knew my heartbeat made me a drummer? 😅

Thanks for logging the first comment! So glad you liked it. Our heartbeats are what unite us as rhythmic practitioners. I can give you some lessons to make you drummer with a bro discount! 🤣

Actually I use drumming as not only my “ happy place “ but believe it or not , the place where I can totally relax . I’ve developed the ability to play to almost any song , with m95 + % accuracy without ever hearing the song before , because I sit in the moment and don’t anticipate more than a second ahead . I often just set the music to shuffle and let random songs que up and just play to them . , I find it very peaceful . I can play the trap set , have a normal conversation and not actively think about playing , it just happens and I just basically am sitting there, listening . In fact , when I try to anticipate I screw it up, so I just let the music pull me . I can also “ feel” where the breaks and strikes are - I think it’s just a different way of placing yourself in the groove .

I love how Adam mentioned about scars and his worst days and how they helped him to find his deepest groove. Such a great talk!

POWERFUL - very engaging - - no better way to connect with people than getting them involved - you did this - and you're right . . . it's not difficult!!!

Thank you, Patti! It was new ground for me to connect with non-drummers. I was a little surprised at how well it went.😆 Instead of counting 1-2-3-4 I like to count Not-Dif-Fi-Cult.

This awesome. After my recent loss I found a way back to my groove by joining drum circles in the Arizona desert this past winter and reconnecting with the rhythm of life. (PS, I hope i can visit next year when I'm out your way, Rokenroll my friend!)
