Well, this is a gulper eel; it's a pretty well-known species. It's just that it's rare to see one all puffed up like this. So much so that they didn't realize it was a gulper eel initially. (Finding new species on deepsea dives is pretty common.)

The entire Nautilus team is hilarious, they're literally the excited little kid trope of scientists. They comment weird looking fish. Describe them totally uncientifically - "weird hair day. He looks like he's got a reindeer head. And lipstick". They give cool rock formations points from 1-5, and mock one of the scientists who hasn't given a 5 on any rocks during that trip until he finally does that. They wave an octopus goodbye. They're so precious I love them all so much

Yup! What's sad is that when you learn science in primary school they stamp all the wonder and joy right out of it and make kids adhere to rigid rules. Then kids think that's all science is when real scientists are actually more like them than like the teacher!

Fish is not a species. Its a group of invertebrates. And Fish makes up like 95% of all invertebrates in the water.

LOVE this, simply because it shows scientists in Awe of something rarely seen. I'm the same way with a new discovery (even if it's just 'New' to me) it's always been grating to me when people take that Awe and Wonder away and act as if You didn't know that, I thought EVERYONE knew that. Nice to see 'Awe and Wonder' in scientists.

To love your job is a gift few of us get. Those scientists go through so much training to get that job. You have to respect their opinions, and knowledge. And if you laugh too, what a bonus. @@kathysemrau2301 They were watching this on TV too...video feed from a robotic sub... And I knew it was a Gulper Eel, as soon as it turned sideways. Lots of Jaques Cousteau and many other shows about exploring the deep oceans. Didn't have to be a scientist. :-)
