He had a history of buying his own bullshit. It's not uncommon that something starts out as a scam and then the scammer starts to believe their own press. It's a lot like method acting. Some people just get too far in. Just look at his time with Jack Parsons.

The difference is that Parson's magick actually worked, in a hyperstitional kind of way.
@matthewhearn9910
@matthewhearn9910 5 лет назад
@@francescobirsaalessandri3992 I'd argue that Hubbard was a powerful magician as well, just not with the powers he claimed to have. Parsons' instinct on that level was dead-on. The man ended up creating from wholecloth a reality now believed in by millions. By the end of his life he was buying his own bullshit as well, so it became reality for him. The problem was he was a man concerned mostly with his own prosperity while Parsons was someone who wanted to see humanity reach the stars, and to do whatever he can to achieve that summum bonum. So while Parsons' life continued to spiral downwards after the Babalon Working (which I believe played a very real metaphysical role in the development of 50s countercultural movements in America and all that those led to, thanks to Cameron's role in that art community), everything Hubbard ever did on a ritualistic level worked towards the end of enriching himself.
@jasonhuttermusic424
@jasonhuttermusic424 Месяц назад
@@francescobirsaalessandri3992 Parson's magic did not work. Thelema is as bonkers as Scientology, which is simply a form of self hypnosis. In scientology one learns to think like a scientologist thereby entrapping themselves. Initial auditing helps a walk in feel better just like confession makes the sinner feel better just like talking about your problems with someone makes you feel better but then the walk in ascribes this feeling to scientology's "tech" and delves deeper into the "religion" while being bilked of their earnings. Add in other likeminded individuals celebrating imagined "wins" and you have a perfect cult.

Agree 100%. Technically, much of the wackiness inherent in Scientology lore is no more absurd than the teachings of many big religions. I have zero issue with their beliefs - particularly if members find their faith of practical use. My issue is with their treatment of ex members which borders on harassment.
@MegaasAlexandros
@MegaasAlexandros 2 года назад
@@kyletitterton doesnt border on harassment, it is harassment- ie creating websites discrediting ex members regardless of the validity of the information , encouraging members not to talk to ex members, claiming that they are owed tens of thousands of $$$ from volunteers is harassment. The son in this film was much more like L Ron Hubbard Jr who helped start Scientology, but eventually left because he realized his father was insane. Yep, whether it's a cult or a pyramid scheme, it's just as toxic. It's also quite absurd that it enjoys legal protections when it should be illegal. A bit of a glaring loophole that freedom of religion laws provide there, if you just claim it's for religious reasons there's a lot you can get away with, however disingenuous your claim.

Personally, I think L Ron was in it for the power. He tried being a member in the O.T.O., but couldn't succeed even with simple stuff. These types of organisations (hierarchical, based on "secret knowledge" of one sort or the other) tend to facilitate abusive, toxic power structures, where the ones at the top can use their underlings in many creative ways. Unable to make it in a more standard (relatively speaking) club of this sort, with the boss at the time expressing distaste for this writer of bad sci-fi, I think he took a look at his stories and figured he could try to make a club of his own. Stripping his system of all the occult elements he had found in the O.T.O. and making it dissimilar, he could add his flights of fancy and get into the power game. And make a buck or two while at it.

Hubbard did not 'accidentally' shell Mexican islands. He was quite deliberate about it: He was dissatisfied with the performance of his gunnery crews and thought they needed some practice, so he just ordered them to bombard the nearest convenient uninhabited target, assuming that all islands in the area must belong to the almighty U-S-A.

The Master was a brilliant film! Hoffman (sorely missed), & Phoenix were awesome! I had read L. Ron Hubbard’s biography & watched Going Clear. It was obvious that this movie was based on L. Ron & Scientology. The day the IRS caved & gave them church status was a dark day! Yet, Scientologists celebrate it, not realizing it would lead to their own suffering. I applaud Leah Remini for going after them and exposing the truth! Her TV show was cancelled, but I believe she’s just getting started! At least she’s spreading the word & making it harder for them to recruit new members. People can help by boycotting actors involved in the “church.” Like Tom Cruise, Elizabeth Moss, John Travolta, Danny Masterson, Kirstie Alley, Jenna Elfman... etc!
@shurik121

L Ron Hubbard was a narcissist. He certainly did believe in Dianetics and that it would help people. He also had a strong need to over emphasize his importance and make grandeur claims about what Dianetics could actually do for an individual. He reminds me a lot of Jospeh Smith who was a narcissist that kept changing his origin story throughout his life, used Biblical polygamy to justify his many adulteries which lead to the doctrine of celestial eternal marriage, and through learning Kabbalah from a crockpot began to teach that God was once a man and we could all become gods over our own planets one day just like He had done before us (okay, the Lord Xenu story does get the award for most crockpot religious idea).
