We present the Restoration of Donald Ross's Scioto Country Club with golf architect Andrew Green.

We sat down with golf course architect Andrew Green to discuss his recent restoration of Donald Ross's Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. Famous for being the childhood home course of Jack Nicklaus, it was also the site of the 1931 Ryder Cup and Bobby Jones's 1926 U.S. Open victory. A Dick Wilson 'renovation' in the 1960s moved the course away from its unique Ross design. Green's restoration has brought back Ross's complex green shapes and above-ground features laid cleverly across a piece of rolling terrain.
A huge thanks to Andrew Green and Scioto Country Club for historical and on-site construction photos.

Great work Andrew. A great dive into the history of the course, what makes and made it special. A true restoration that honours original ideals. Bring back the width and run on I say

Played it twice. Speaking for myself, it literally was an eerie experience in that I could see Jack hitting shots on every hole. Just a magnificent place.

I caddied there in the ‘80s and wasn’t aware that it had been changed so significantly from the original Ross design. And didn’t appreciate how special it was to play there every Wednesday in the summers.

This is so well spoken & documented. All the editing work that went into this one was well worth it, great video!

Wow. I worked in the bag shop at Scioto for a few years while I was a student at Ohio State back in the mid-1990s (and of course played as much as I could in the evenings). These are some dramatic changes to the greensites, I have trouble recognizing the holes unless the view pans back.

This course is CHERISHED to be able to play here in Columbus. Next to Memorial this is probably the next most sought after round.

The Golf Club in New Albany is right there as well. Only played it once and that's from knowing PB Dye out at Urbana CC. Crazy hard course.

@@kevindick1110 I got to intern at The Golf Club this past summer and that place is unbelievably special. There's a large group of members at TGC who are also members at Scioto, and the way they talked about it made it seem otherworldly. Haven't got to play out there yet, but definitely jumping on the first opportunity to get out there.

@@kevindick1110 Hey guys, I've been an avid golfer and lover of the game my whole life, and also a Columbus resident for the past ~10 years. It's been an absolute dream of mine to get to play either Scioto and/or TGC even before I lived here (born and raised in Piqua, OH). It sounds like you both have some experience at these beloved, beautiful courses that we are so lucky to have here locally, so I'm just curious - is there anything I can possibly do to heighten by slim chances of getting onto either of these bucket list courses? Besides the obvious solutions of either becoming a member (something I can't begin to afford at the moment, but we're working hard on that!), or by knowing and being invited by a current member - is there some sort of local waiting list or public access opportunities at either of these places? Thanks guys and again, any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Architects have an exceptional hubris… in 25 years the next architect will say the same thing about how he brought it back to a true Donald Ross and the last architect was a bum. Like Ross is waiting at the pearly gates to thank these guys 😂
