A fresh look at an old classic, to get you shooting your old Trip 35 or perhaps to interest you in investing in this great little film camera.
Includes guide to buying, checking, loading and shooting with the camera. Bonus flash guide at the end.
Thanks, Rob.
Video Details:
This video was a real challenge to edit, it wasn't until I was two hours in that I realised that Premier Pro is crap at syncing audio / video in the timline - you've got to creat a multi camera clip, then you can edit on the fly. (Which is soooo amazingly easy!)
Canon 600d / T3i dSLR main camera, 1080p, manual exposure ( auto ISO, f/3 1/50th on the 40mm pancake), auto white balance.
Logitech C920 HD Webcam at 720p for close-ups, manual exposure, manual wb, manual focus.
OBS to record screencasts.
Audio: Zoom H1 with AT3350 lav, manual levels.
Audio put through Levelator 2 & noise reduction in Audacity.
All edited and synced in Adobe Premiere Pro CC.

i found a trip 35 in a shop similar to good will in my country its called "de kringloopwinkel" and it was only 2.5 euros which is not allot of money..... so i bought it. i basically bought it without knowing anything about it. but thanks to your video i now know how it works and that it actually is in very good condition. thanks !! i'm gonna go get a film this week and enjoy taking pictures with it. and practicing of course =D

Love these more recent longer videos Rob especially the reviews such as on the Trip, the Mju 2 and the OM2N. Keep it up. I remember the David Bailey ad from the 70s for the Trip (set in the context of a wedding) and it was my first proper camera given by my dad on my 10th or 11th bday. Loved it then and still use one now.

Hey! thank you for sharing this video! I am new to film photography but I really am interested in getting an analog camera. I'm considering on getting either Olympus Trip 35 or Canon AE-1 (but I think I'm leaning more towards this Olympus Trip!). I have some questions about taking the photos itself. How far do we have to turn the advance wheel after pressing the shutter? and how do I know that I have successfully used that frame? I hope you could help! Thank you :)

Don't worry, just turn the wheel or push the advance until it stops, then the camera is ready to shoot.

can you use the flash settings (f 2.8, 4, 5.6,..) to shoot without flash? Thank you so much, love your channel, but i'm starting in the film photography
@RobNunn
@RobNunn 9 лет назад
anducure To get proper exposures, shoot in A mode when not using the flash. If you shoot in one of the aperture settings, the camera will meter at 1/40th all the time, and you won't get a good exposure. But then again, you could just give it a go and see what happens....

I see that your camera is also a bit "moldy" on the right side of the interior. Does anyone know if this is supposed to be like that because it's an old camera or do I have to clean this fluffy stuff in some way?

i have troubles with choosing the right focusing distance. Sometimes it ends up very clear, and sometimes it doesnt. The only 'safe' focus is the 3 meter-ish one with the group of people. The infinity tends to be a mess, the first one too, while the second one (the two people) works sometimes. And the results are not very sharp compared to the pictures i see on the internet (might be from my shaking arm since i'm still very new to analog photography) and very grainy compared to my liking (might be from me underexposing it)

A 400 ISO film in the TRIP makes super photoos'' At low light, put a 800 ISO or a 1600 ISO in the Trip Set dial at 400 ASA Overexposing is no problem At vey low light the Trip will be blocked; just cheat the system by turning from A to 2,8 you will expose at 1/40 with 2,8 When finnihed ,return to A ( = auto exposure)

I have an all black olympus 35 and I did watch your video on "what to check" (TY!). Although the aperature does seem to function as expected, when I look at the back of the camera I think there are shutter blades behind the aperture (?), and not sure they are opening. Also, there seems to be a "partial moon" (not a uniform shade/color) on these "blades" if that is what they are. I have a photo of this...how could I send it to you, if you would be so kind as to provide some advice.

Hello, maybe someone can help me here. I got a trip recently and as far as I am aware loaded the film in correctly and at the end rewound it back in and removed it. When I took the film to get it developed they told me it was blank. I have now bought a new roll of film to try again, is there a way to check that it is working? Can you think of any reason the film would have come out completely blank? Thank you!

I suspect that vertical/horizontal adjustment on the Helios flash is so that the flash could also be used with Olympus Pen half-frame cameras (i.e. with a vertical crop). For full frame 35mm (i.e a horizontal crop), the flash should also be aligned horizontally to have full frame flash coverage. Nice video though!

Hi there, I'm planning to purchase an Olympus Trip 35 from an online seller. They claiming that the Olympus Trip 35 doesn't have flash or a light metre built in which is slightly strange. Is this true?
@RobNunn
@RobNunn 9 лет назад
***** Definitely. The Trip 35 is a fully automatic film camera that requires no batteries, that's one of its strengths, with no flash and no light meter that you can use. It does have a mechanism for measuring light to adjust the aperture, but no needle like a film slr / rangefinder.
@realistian
@realistian 9 лет назад
Rob Nunn I see. In regards to testing whether the selenium light meter works using the red flagging, how would I know whether there are no faults? Slightly confused here haha
@RobNunn
@RobNunn 9 лет назад
***** It's always a gamble when buying old film cameras, but you could ask the seller to do the red flag and aperture test. Ask them to set the lens to A. Then they should place their palm over the Selenium Cells, blocking out the light, keeping it there while they wind the camera on and press the shutter. The red flag should pop up and the shutter should not fire. Next they should fire the shutter, wind it on, then while looking into the front of the lens, turn the aperture ring to 2.8, and press the shutter almost all the way. They should see the the aperture blades opening up completely, and when they release the shutter the aperture hole should snap back to being very small. If it passes those two tests, I'd buy it for the right price. Just be aware that the camera could also have light leaks, focussing issues, faulty winders, etc. Good luck!
@realistian
@realistian 9 лет назад
Rob Nunn The cheapest I've found with a hot-shoe for flash, strap and case is £37. I feel that's a very good deal. I'll ask the seller to do these tests and hopefully I can trust them to be completely truthful. Thank you very much for the assistance!

I just received this camera after going through my grandfather's belongings, but something's off; the shutters are fine (nothing's stuck!), the lightmeter is still functioning, and it's on A, but the red flag won't make it up all the way. Like something's preventing it from doing so, but i can't see anything.. Would it still function, or have I been saddled with a non-functioning camera?

@RobNunn
@RobNunn 9 лет назад
Doudouce k Have a look at the aperture blades from the front as you press the shutter button in good light. It's probably the blades sticking at some point, not letting enough light in, and that's making the flag pop up.

Hi Rob Thank You so much for your video it really helped me . I got mine today but when it's in Auto mode the red mark appears but when I change it to manual the shutter allows me to take a picture is it because there is no enough light or do I need to change the ISO..?
@RobNunn
@RobNunn 9 лет назад
SofanhR If the red flag appears in auto, there's not enough light for a good exposure, so either use flash, turn on some lights or put a higher ISO film in your camera. In a pinch you can just switch to manual mode and select 2.8, but beware that you may get underexposed or grainy shots.

Hi there. I love taking sunset pictures but I know that will be an issue when using the automatic setting because the trip, as it should, will not let me take a picture due to there being not enough light. Is there a way around this by adjusting the ISO and aperture? I've experimented by increasing the ISO to 400 and adjusting the aperture to 5.5 but yet to develop the pictures. Flash is no good for landscape pictures so I was hoping that there is a way around this. Thank you
@RobNunn
@RobNunn 9 лет назад
+Ian B Ok, you can leave the camera in A mode, then put the ISO higher than your film, and that will give you darker shots, or you can select a tight aperture (and the camera will then shoot at 1/40th), and that might give you a darker shot, but at 1/40th it'll probably be brighter. Also bear in mind that if they are colour photos developed in a lab, their scanning process will make a dark photo lighter too, unless you specifically tell them to look out for the sunset shots... Just remember that the Trip 35 was designed to be an auto exposure camera with little or no manual input, and that's the beauty of it too.
@realistian
@realistian 9 лет назад
+Rob Nunn Thankyou! I've also read that a trick in dark settings (particularly at night) without flash is to adjust the aperture to 2.8 with an ISO of 400. I guess the great thing about the trip is that there is a lot of room to experiment

Not sure what film to use etc? (The concert will have bright lighting but the singers should be fairly still throughout the performance). Thanks :)

Ok, so the Trip 35 isn't exactly the best camera for concerts, but if the lighting is bright you might have a chance at getting some usable photos, but be prepared for them to be grainy and blurred. Grab ISO 400 film, colour or perhaps a C41 black and white like Ilford XP2 400. Set the focus via the little icons depending on how far away you are, and set the ISO to 400, and the exposure to A. If the little red flag keeps popping up, turn the exposure ring to 2.8, and then just take plenty of shots. Enjoy the music, take a few photos, and good luck!

Thanks a lot! I'll make sure I do that. I'll bring a little digital camera too just incase :) Just bought a few roles of fujifilm Xtra 400 hopefully that'll do the trick!

You wasted half the roll loading the camera. LOL

I agree. I thread the tongue on the take-up spool by winding on as little as possible until I am reasonably sure it is taking up. Close the back and wind only until the shutter is cocked. Watch the rewind lever while winding on to make sure it turns. Press the shutter. Now, all the film still in the can is unexposed and you have exposed the minimum needed to secure the tongue. However I must admit I once failed to load an underwater camera properly and the film counter was still on zero when I finished taking photos of two amazing fish that I never saw again.

Just a very important question. Will it handle an Ilford Delta 3200 film (capable of exposing high asa film)? Thanks :)

Simon Meyer The Trips auto exposure only goes up to ISO 400, and Delta 3200 is usually shot at ISO 1600, so it would be two stops overexposed - you'd be "pulling" the film, so you would then have to compensate in development. This could lead to some interesting looking results, so I'd say give it a go!

Try a lens cloth first, and if that doesn't shift the dirt, a damp (not wet) cloth.

Hi Rob! Thanks for the video, I recently got my hands on an Olympus Trip and have watched several times! Got my first roll of film developed today (Kodak Colorplus on your recommendation) and only 3 photos turned out - the rest were apparently light fogged? Can you talk about how this might happen/how to avoid? Thanks a lot :-)

Ok, it could be a number of things - but it would help if you take a look at the negatives themselves. Apart from the three good photos, is the rest of the film totally dark, or is it just each individual frame, with a clear border? It could be that the back of the camera got accidentally opened at some point, or that the light seals have failed, or even that the film wasn't attached properly and the rest of the film simply didn't get used, and the lab is confused. Of course if the film wasn't new, then it could be that too. Have a look at those negs, then get back to me and maybe we can work this out together. Cheers, Rob.
