Having your tires changed at a shop can be a costly endeavor. But doing the job yourself can save you money and give you the added satisfaction of being master of your own domain! This is a simple YET COMPLETE tire changing tutorial that will guide you through the many steps of dismounting and mounting (remove, install, replace)a tire on your motorcycle or scooter.
Using the proper tools is definitely imperative to doing this job correctly. Using an improper tool or using the proper tool improperly can result in damage to your tire or wheel and THAT can put your safety at stake.
The tools I use to change a tire in this video are:
---Tire Levers/Tire Spoons/Tire Irons: amzn.to/46vWHWQ
---Motion Pro Rim Shield II: amzn.to/2Zwz5OW
---Valve Core Tool: amzn.to/2KZkXK2
---C-Clamp: amzn.to/2PiVDDf
---Scrap Wood: amzn.to/2ZudCX1

Excellent video! Just used it as a tutorial to demount and remount a scooter tire to replace a leaking valve stem. One comment... I seem to recall a video in which Garrett said he was 6'3 and 200 plus pounds... So it's no wonder he can arm wrestle those tires while they sit on a table at elbow height. For the rest of us who aren't so Texas-sized, what I found worked better was putting the tire/wheel on the ground and using my foot to hold the tire in the proper position on the wheel while mounting it back on with the tire spoons. Otherwise everything else was spot on! Thanks again Garret and happy scootering from New Braunfels!

That is really cool about the bead drop. I didn't realize what that was for. It just makes sense. Prior to this I thought you just had to stretch the living crap out of the tire to get it over the rim.

Dear Garret Greetings from London, UK! Thank you for such a comprehensive explanation of the tyre-change process for a tubeless tyre. I've changed tubed tyres before but when I researched a tubeless process I was put off because the video I watched showed the guy cutting off the bead with an angle grinder! Your explanation of using the 'bead drop' in conjunction with the bead circumference is illuminating - and is what one might do with a tubed tyre through natural discovery. But your explanation of what is happening makes the process understandable! In addition your technique uses force as a last resort rather than a first! You have combined your obvious great experience with your very effective communication skills! Well done! I also like the use of clamp and wood as an effective way of 'popping' the bead off the rim. I feel well equipped now to change my next tyre - even though it's a 10inch - and stop being fleeced by our motorcycle shops - (when they deign to change one, usually a couple of days!). So many thanks for your video. Regards Charlie H

2 important tips to make life easier. - Always use 3 tyre irons. Much easier to "walk" them. One after the other. - In the absence of a "tyre machine". One can fix the tyre with a large bolt+large washers and respective nuts. To fix the tyre onto a regular bench vice. Not having to hold the tyre at the same time, as doing other operation, render it incredibly easy. That way there's no need for all that gymnastics of holding the tyre while pulling and pushing. ;-)

My local honda motorcycle dealer didn't sell the size of City Grip for the front tire, and refused to install them at any price if I bought them elsewhere and Cycle gear told me they only mount tires larger than 14" and I just wanted to say this video helped me alot. I would have much rather just paid someone because It took me 2 days of being so mad at my tires lol, but now I feel I could probably change one in less than an hour now that I get where I went wrong in the process, but this was an excellent starting point. A great deal of that time was spent trying to get the bead to seat without an proper air compressor, the little tankless 12v one with my car couldn't overcome the leaking before the bead seated, and the bike pump was just impossible for me too. I even tried to ratchet strap to get it to seat. Eventually I took a 4500 psi cylinder and a regulator and some paintball equipment and with that much flow it seated in just a few seconds. Also I found that using a heat gun to make the whole tire warm to the touch made it so much easier to take off, and the cheap Amazon rimguards caused me lots of scratches, I bought the motion pro ones and I have to say they are worth every penny. So now I have two new City Grip 2s, and my PCX can get back into the rain of the PNW without slipping and sliding

When I purchased by used scooter that was sitting in a warehouse for a couple years. It barely had any miles on it and the price was very competitive. Buying used, you never know what you'll get yourself into but the only thing I found wrong with it (so far!) was the rear tire had lost air. Couldn't tell if it was lost while sitting or had a small leak. After filling it with air and riding it very short distances. I let it sit and the following day, the tire had deflated. At the time I was very excited about getting on it and riding it so I took the easy route and used the fix a flat sealant. It works great but I know that I can't drive safely with the sealant. I have purchased a new tire and plan on using the same rim. After talking to some mechanic friends they told me "have fun getting that tire off with the fix a flat sealant! It's going to be a pain in the you know what!" Thinking about it more they're absolutely right! At the time I wanted to ride! Probably should've done my homework before adding the sealant. I have not tried to do anything with it yet because I'm not sure if it's something I can do myself or try to find a local tire shop that would be willing to work on a scooter. Not that many scooter shops in my area. Any recommendations on how to remove a tire that has fix a flat sealant? Should I buy a tire with the rim on it? Or possibly find a local mechanic that will be able to take care of it with out charging too much since there's extra "labor" involved. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Stay safe! Drive Safe! And most importantly Have Fun!

Hey bud. Just did a valve job on my scooter. That was a tricky one. Everything is so damn sensitive. And you're not at exactly tap dead center its gonna be totally off. Any way just finished that she was riding great. Now I notice she has a terrible time in the morning cold starting her. Its not cold out by any means I live in Miami, but its taking several cranks and a lot of times I have to adjust the tension screw connected to the throttle cable. Thats the idle adjuster right? Is there a rule of thumb for that screw that I don't know about. Clockwise, counter clockwise? I just give it a few quarter turns in either direction till she cranks. But then the next morning, with that screw in the same position from the day before, she won't crank up. I already checked the fuel line and filter for debris, I put in a new spark plug and tested the plug wire. Those are fine. I ran a bottle of k100 thru her and changed her oil. So.... what am I missing?
@Scooter_911
@Scooter_911 4 года назад
@@roryoconnor7239 well if the only thing you changed was the valve adjustment and now its running poorly I would re-check the adjustment. other than that i would suspect you might have an issue with the autochoke, but dont go jumping to conclusions. make sure you test everything before you start changing variables. make sure that you didnt bump any vacuum lines loose or leave anything unplugged. Also the idle adjustment screw really shouldnt help it start any more than applying some throttle by hand. let me know what you find

Great explanation, although it's still harder than you make it look! Good tip about cutting the guard in half. I would observe that this process is materially more difficult with smaller tires, which don't have much flexibility to wrangle around the rim. Given that I was never going to use the old tire again, I've found it easier to use an oscillating saw to cut the old tire off the rim, which only takes about 30 seconds. Also, I've put internal Bluetooth TPMS sensors into the bead drop underneath the valves. They work great, but they make it more difficult to get the tire on, and I was happy to pay a shop to do it for me.
@Scooter_911
@Scooter_911 5 лет назад
Absolutely! I've been changing tires professionally for around 10 years now and I still struggle putting the 10" racing slicks on my race scooter. Like you said sometimes its just better to have someone with a full tire machine do it (or do it at the shop instead of in the bed of my truck on race day...)

Man, that’s a great idea about Bluetooth TPMS sensors. The number of times I’ve fried my hands on the exhaust checking the rear tire...

Paul H Just don’t use the kind that screws onto the end of the valve like a lollipop. The added mass stresses the valve stem and makes it wobble, which on mine caused a leak and battered the sensor against the exhaust, breaking it after a few miles. Only use the sensor type that installs inside the tire.

tenders Good to know! I’ve seen those and had my suspicions but I also figured it probably couldn’t hurt to try them. Seems I was wrong! Sorry you ended up learning the hard way but thanks for helping me avoid the same mistake.

I will still have my local repair shop do this work. $56 for all those tools... cost of having the repair shop change out the tire $49.99. No brainer here. LOL

Thank you for this video as well as all your vids. I paid a shop to change my tires and they did a terrible job and will not back up their work. Rear tire has a huge difference in bead lines around. As a result, huge out of roundness and a terrible ride. I think they bent my front rim also. So, I ordered new tires, as I’ve rode these for awhile. I will get front rim straightened and then mount my new tire. I will do the rear 1st as the rim is perfect.

I am just going to change to rear tire on my Buddy 125. I c u use Michelins. Thinking about a best seller on Amazon. I also want to get a little trailer to haul my electric bike and things around. The Buddy is so sweet. Thank u for all your vids!!

It’s a good idea to attach the rim to a bench or attach it to the plank and use your own weight (plank and two chairs is a nice way) to keep it in place when using tire spoons. First bead over the rim lip, as you showed. Second bead, with a strap and your own weight to pull it off once you’ve got it over rim lip by spoons. Plank upright on the floor and use your leg for pull downwards. My best time is on minute and ten second, for take scooter tire off and put in place, with plank.

Hi Garret. Thank you for all your efforts in producing these scooter videos. They are well done and easy to follow. I am a 70 year old retiree and while I have been riding bikes since I was 14 I have just purchased my first scooter. I need some help with an issue I have. The scooter is a 2009 Aprilia Scarebeo 200. My problem is I can NOT get the seat open to get at the storage compartment or the gas tank. There is a remote release for the latch, operated by cable from the ignition key. I am unable to figure out how to get to the latch under the rear of the seat. I am very afraid of damaging the plastic. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Regards Inspector Gadget

Oh bummer, I've had to deal with that a few times. If you're very patient and a little clever you can stick a long thin screwdriver under the seat and poke at the lever that the cable pulls. If you hit it just right the seat will unlatch and you can disable the latch. Good luck!
