Phil goes over the Pros and Cons of renting and riding a scooter or motorbike in Thailand. #RidingScooter Thailand #ScooterThailand #ThailandTraffic
It is very common to ride bikes in Thailand or similar countries like Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos etc.
And there are some good reasons for it. However, the danger and risk that comes with it is often underestimated or simply overlooked by travelers.
As experienced riders (and people who have seen the ugly side of the traffic) in several countries we want to share our opinion, give advice and point out things to consider before you do ride a bike in South East Asia!
In this video there are 4 main sections:
1:00 Pros of Riding a Scooter in Thailand
2:56 Cons of Riding a Scooter in Thailand
4:28 Things to Consider Before Riding a Scooter in Thailand
5:46 Quick Tips for Renting A Scooter in Thailand

Great vid. About to go rent one tomorrow. And appreciate the tips. After riding around a lot in cars including with a local for a day your description of the traffic are spot on. I was going to ride one the last 5 days but I had food poisoning and felt super dizzy.

I used to ride motorbikes when I was younger, 30 years later I went to Karon, Phuket and hired a scooter. Very scary at first but I did become accustomed to it. Been 3 times now and I have to say you nailed it with your review. I use the same scooter company each time because the bikes are excellent and well maintained and they just take a photo of my passport. Many people think you can ride on a car licence but you are spot on, motorcycle licence from home country plus International driving permit is required. I always take my own helmet too.Congratulation on a great review.

I have been driving in Bangkok for 15 years. a few wallows and bowls, never a real accident. The 1st time I go to Koh Samui, (I was already 5 years old from BKK) the 1st day on Samui, I rent a motorbike, the brakes don't work. I bring the motorcycle back, on the way. a dog crossing without looking, I hit a dog at just 50 km/h. Motorcycle exploded helmet which literally disintegrated on the ground. (dog missing) 3000 B to pay. (no more because I speak Thai and I threatened to call the cops, that my girlfriend's father is police commissioner and division chief of Surat Thani and very mean (pure invention). We can allow ourselves this type of bluff, although Farang (white) when we speak perfect Thai and we don't have the look of a drunken German tourist with a belly that protrudes from the shorts. Island are not freiendly and very very more dangerous of Bangkok. (but no body now, The most dangerous road of thailand is the Islands roads. Sand that makes the roads slippery, also slippery smooth concrete road with potholes as big as the Grand Canyon. Complicated turns, Complicated Brake... lot of trafic jam. Thai concept of driving code, because, no driver's license. Coconuts that fall, on your face, buffalo that fast emerges from the pits without warning, elephants, Cobra snake, large monitor lizard, make aggressive attacks. Crazy and dangerous dogs, Drunken tourists, Druken Older Thai, Amphetamine drugged driver, Youg kamikaze Thai driver. UFO in the road, motorcycles in poor condition etc etc etc. the heat, lack of basic protection, not to mention swimsuits and beach sandals... Thai Helmet norme (this is a jog, ) Evry body no respect for the highway code You will end up in minced meat. best regards.

One of the best and most honest videos on scooters in Thailand ! Still deciding myself if i want to drive one or not in the traffic in Pattaya. Chances of death are pretty low considering the speeds, but ending up in a hospital isnt that much fun either. But i do want an Yamaha Nmax... decisions decisions, thanks for the great video.

Hey, thanks a lot! I drove in Pattaya and got fined by the police after 10 minutes for not having my International license with me. 😂 I think if you are in the centre you dont really need a scooter in pattaya. But if you are ok with the driving it's nice to have to go out and explore.

I really like hearing the Pros and Cons, and also the estimated costs and accessories. Thanks for providing the truth and dangers as well. I know when I travel overseas and plan to drive, I'll get an international driver license but yeah, I don't think I would ever drive in any of the Asian countries from my experience there. Way too much crazy traffic for my personal preference. Great info and thanks, Phil!!
@DeanaandPhil
@DeanaandPhil 5 лет назад
That's very reasonable. It just feels like not a lot of people here think about it like that before driving. I just hope traffic regulations and safety standards improves over the next years in these countries. =)

Well done, at the start I thought this was going to be the normal tourist vid of get a scooter and forget everything. But the second part was good and some great tips and advice. You will not be covered by your travel insurance on a motorcycle in Thailand if you do not have a motorcycle license from your own country. Great vid in the end well done!

I have ridden motorcycles and scooters for 30+ years. I have never (thank God) had an accident or incident. I consider myself a good rider. I concur with everything said here. I have made 2 trips to Thailand of about 10 days each. Used Taxis my first trip exclusively as I had a buddy with me showing me the ropes in Pattaya. Oddly he refused to ride on a scooter yet he has a Thai wife for whom he bought a scooter who uses it daily. I suspect that Pattaya's traffic is slightly more tame than Bangkok, yet it has its rush hours, too. It was a little difficult to adjust to driving on the left side. I got 2 tickets for not wearing a helmet--something I truly hate to do--so I greased the palms of the cops and we parted friends. I met a Frenchman at my hotel who like me has ridden motorcycles all his life. He encouraged me and showed me his favorite rental vendor. It was super cheap as I recall....something ridiculous like $40 for a week. I got out to see so many great spots on the scooter that I would not have seen from a taxi. But, if you are not a super confident rider--stay safe and take a taxi! Very well done video in my opinion! Heed the GOOD ADVICE in it! If you don't think you should ride a scooter there (if there is any shred of doubt) then PLEASE DO NOT!

Yep, I agree with both the pros and the cons. Traffic is crazy in Thailand! I think it depends on what kind of person you are. I'm a nervous driver, so it probably wouldn't be safe for me to get a scooter. However, these tips are really helpful and realistic!
@DeanaandPhil

True. When you feel nervous and unsure is when people make mistakes. Unfortunately I think there are too many people out there who just have "vacation googles" on and risk too much.

Hey guys.....I'm an Aussie.....your tips about riding a scooter in Thailand are exactly 100 % correct....I visit Thailand frequently and have a Yamaha Nmax registered in Surin under my G/F name...rent or purchase a scooter which gives you complete control at the handlebars....us foreigners are slightly bigger than the average Thai....my helmet is a Bell 500 as opposed to the plastic shit one can buy locally...I ride out in front of the other scooters...from traffic lights ( I don't care what happens behind me )....riding a scooter is a pleasurable experience in Thailand but as you say expect the unexpected....and therefore as a seasoned rider who rides a Harley Fatbob in Australia....I would not dare attempt riding in Bangkok or around Pattaya.....your licensing recommendations are spot on.....and as you say never take anything for granted....Staying safe and enjoying Thailand is paramount....

An international license in combo with your valid motorcycle endorsed license from Country or origin usually satisfies your travel insurance up to 250 cc.....no license NO INSURANCE....( ride at your own risk )

Great video and very informative! Thank you so much for making it. I've been living in Thailand for the past seven years and I'm very grateful that I decided to not ride a scooter or motorcycle. According to the latest un health statistic, Thailand has the most dangerous roads in the world next to Nigeria. Thai drivers are aggressive, inpatient and incompetent. In the past 7 years I've traveled to almost every Province and Island in Thailand and there are so many accidents everywhere I go and I always see foreigners with the infamous Thai tattoo which is basically a purple scar where your road rash used to be. A lot of tourist think that riding a scooter is like riding a bicycle but that's simply not true. Anyone coming to Thailand I highly recommend that you take public transportation so that you can spend your time focusing on the beautiful landscapes instead of having your head on a swivel to avoid getting in an accident or, Worse, dying. I got a buddy who has been teaching English with me in Thailand and he's an experienced motorcyclist. He's back in England with an amputated foot. I've had countless high school students who have died from riding a motorbike. Even if you drive defensively, high school students who have died from writing a motorbike. Even if you drive defensively, you're sharing the road with "push and shove" buses, trucks and cars.. It's chaotic out here. Death is so common it doesn't even shocked anybody out here. Seriously. You guys do the math. I'm glad the OP is still alive and smiling.

If you plan to stay several months. with something other than a tourist visa. Pass the local scooter license 500B, cab. BY APPOINTMENT you can have an English-speaking examiner. buying a 125 is between 28 and 45 K at 36,000 B you have a Honda cub type Honda wave with a simple carburettor + 3500B insurance per year. Bring a helmet and protective gear from home, from your western country. it will cost you much less. When no longer needed, you resell it with the maintenance booklet. You will have a safe machine that works well. Because otherwise Thailand is Madmax 2

Hey quick question, I will be backpacking Thailand, what’s the price difference if I want to get a driver and a scooter. I don’t know how to ride a scooter and don’t trust myself 😂. Is it still affordable, budget friendly with a driver and scooter. Thanks 😀
@DeanaandPhil
@DeanaandPhil 5 лет назад
If you're not comfortable driving a scooter, don't do it!! There are plenty of affordable ways to get around. A lot of people (including ourselves) use the Grab App. It's like the SE Asia version of Uber or Lyft (a taxi service application). You can hire car taxis or even scooter taxis to get to different places. There are also usually tuk tuks or songthaew trucks you can use to get around. :)

Totally irresponsible. A car licence is NOT enough. If you can't make the effort to get a motorbike licence you should NOT be riding. It's not just about obeying the law. Its about people safety, both to riders and pedestrians. Riding a motorbike is not the same as riding a bicycle...
