The "K" section is just amazing to the ear, especially the trombone & euphonium line that occurs to make those chords maj7's. Amazing compostion overall.

We took this to state contests back in the early 70s and I still remember every note. Great to play and I hope never forget it. I played the bass clarinet. PS, we did get a 1 at state.

I had the gift of playing the tuba solo in this piece and it is one of my favorite solos, with the volume of the tuba (which is quiet compared to other instruments) and the muted trumpets it brought excitement but also an ominous and romantic vibe, I loved it so much and I killed that solo.

there's a helluva lot more going on here than when I was a second trombonist in sixth grade.

I played solo first trumpet on this piece many years ago and it was the more fun and enjoyable because all the voices fit together. Intonation and attention to detail was critical. God did it find the last high note scary at the time but comforted that my lip would be fine once I hit the low three at the end.
@AnthonyOTooleMusic
@AnthonyOTooleMusic 3 года назад
That's good for developing trumpet players. Can't avoid high notes forever, and it's good to have that carrot out there to try and grab. Every time you don't hit it your practicing the attempt and then it starts to get easier and more comfortable!

Yeah, that piece has a lot of similarities, not that there's anything wrong with that. If you're gonna borrow musical ideas at least borrow good ones.

how do you even go about learning how to analyze music like this, i'm currently in high school and i like writing music, but i've really only been comfortable with writing for a small group of players. There are also a few composers that i really want to know about how they wrote their music, some of those being W Francis Mcbeth, and Douglas Akey

If i am not mistaken this was taken from a lp recording in the mid 70's of claude t.smith's compositions by the university of kansas symphonic band. record also has his chorale and allegro and dramatic prelude
