I lived in Lahaina for many years, never seen anything south lining up like that at Kaanapali. Takes a rare angle and huge swell to get past Kahoolawe and Lanai to hit KP like that. I wonder what Shark pit, breakwall, the harbour and Mala were doing..

It's like The Dirty Wedge has a big brother in Maui. Great footage as usual Chris.....they treat their beaches better in resort towns and keep the sand trash free unlike NPB. Stay safe and wasy travels. PEACE

Really suoerfantastic...shows ultimate aspect of surfing ...that is interacting with ocean waves in a pure way, outside the usual norms of surfing without the usual conventional standards of "quality" waves surfed because makeabke or acceptable well known good spot with others and worthy of photos or type of interaction we'll accepted as worthwhile, or something like that. Really beyond great that you saw it was worth recording and demonstrated this fundamental , primordial motivation and sorta childlike or innocent play with waves, outside usual value judgements of etc.

The commentating is lowkey the best part of the video

I was lucky enough to spend a week at Kaanapali in October 1975. I never would have believed it would ever have waves that size if you hadn't recorded them. I would have thought Lanai and Moloka'i would shield Kaanapali from such massive waves. Makes me wonder what was hitting Waikiki around that same time.

Planned trip and got lucky or saw what was coming and rushed over? Of course, Kona went off too. Almost 30 years ago Iniki was nearly triple that size. The news kept saying this was from Darby but that was an east swell. This was from the code red Tahiti swell.

the wave at 8:31 is insane. I watched on Sunday at Ma'alea. The waves to the west at the harbor were so big and barreling, with like 2 guys out.

Knee boarder gets shot up into space like a bullet at 7:40. Legend has it he is still orbiting earth to this day.
