This song kinda hits different when you grew up in the time where the events they are referring too in the song took place. Fall of the Berlin wall, the collapse of the Soviet Union.
it is history now but the cold war was a big burden for all of us, who lived trough this time. I was 19 when the wall came down and was in Berlin. The sentiments of the cold war are also captured in Stings "Russians" and Billy Joels "Lenningrad". Both songs highly recomended.
@@chasingbirds3073 Yeah exactly what I was getting at a bit in my reaction to this. She is too young to know how meaningful this song was to not just the German people but especially to the German people. So it just gets glossed over as just another reaction to another song and she misses it's true beauty.
@@GASH_oneWrong. It's a German band singing about the 1989-1991 era, including their own trip to Moscow . Song was originally recorded before the USSR collapsed .
This was such a personal song to me back then. Still is, actually. The Berlin wall fell in '89 and it shook the world. Then the first Gulf War started in '90. Being 17, there was a bunch of anxiety around if all of us were going to be finding ourselves up to our eyeballs in sand in some other country in a year. A year later, I graduated. A few months later I was in love. A few months after that my heart was in shreds. There was so much change going on in the world and my life, this song was a catharsis for all of it, the sad, the sweet, the scary, and the euphoric. I can look back at all of it now, even the most painful, with fondness now when I hear this song.
That was actually the 2nd Gulf War, the name was also used for the Iran-Iraq war . But the numbering got skewed by those counting only the US-involved ones.
Sadly, this is a short version of the song..It misses some lyrics (Blows straight into the face of time part) and some very nice guitar solo. None the less, epic song, one of my fav to play on quitar.
Everyone picks this version for some reason. There should be a hint that this isn't the full song in the description because people are missing some of the best moments from the song.
Maggie...that's not the whole song. There's a whole verse and the chores and the guitar Solo is completely missing. Check the original video. This is not the whole song..
First time I heard this song, was years ago, I had just gotten my first car and I went for a road trip, this song came on the radio, It blew me away, I actually had to pull over and listen to it properly. Literally stopped me in my tracks. Great song. Never forgotten it after all those years. I think you got distracted, you need to listen to it from start to finish uninterrupted.
Grandgrandpa 72 here. (German) I was born and raised behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany. You listening to the Lyrics, this was after the fall from the Wall the Song of Fridom in Europa. Now many Years later, this bring Tears over this Mess.😠
I grew up a military brat in Germany in the mid to late 80s to early 90s. I lived in Southern Germany when Eastern Germany opened up and the Berlin Wall came down. I can remember vividly many of the germans around me their reaction. I can remember my german teacher looking at the TV screen with people climbing onto the wall. Something that was NEVER allowed in many areas. To see the people taking anything they could to destroy the Berlin Wall. Through his beard and mustache, you could see the tears streaking his face. It really struck me how much of a meaningful thing this was. To recognize you are watching something that is a major event in history. If you really do not know the history of the Berlin Wall you might want to watch a documentary about it. Here are a few suggestions. Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall. ABC News Classics: The Fall of the Berlin Wall. Modern Marvels: The Berlin Wall
One of the best rock ballads ever. When I was a child I didn't like the Scorpions. The music was to hard for me. But with the german reunification I changed my mind. For me as a german the the hymn of the german unification. A very important time in my life because my mother fled the GDR and was separeted from her family and friends. Unfortunatly my grandparents died before it happened. Thank you for reaction to this and you should know in the '90 we only had those sparkling lights 😉
I was 15 when the Berlin wall fell and being from the United States I never had to know what it was like to be separated from loved ones like families in Germany. But could see from news coverage and photos what it meant to the German people when it finally happened. There would no longer be an East and West Germany the Soviet Union would soon collapse ending the cold war. You felt like real peace was finally at your feet the threat of the world destroying itself was gone. Even though it was a fleeting moment it was a great time a hopeful time. This song embodied that time in history.
I'm old enough to remember when the music video hit MTV, in 1990 as the Berlin Wall came down, this song was a soundtrack to the reunification of East and West Germany.. In fact my father's first duty after he joined the Army was being stationed in West Berlin during the Berlin Airlift in 1949.
@@maggiereneemusic Well you're welcome. I haven't seen that one yet, I tend to watch reactions to the music I grew up listening to, to see the reactors take on "my type" of music. Everything from Aerosmith to ZZ Top, the "Old Classic Rock" stuff and to bands I have seen live, like Heart, Styx, Queen, Journey, Billy Squier, Bryan Adams, Bruce Sprinsteen to name a few.
This demonstrates that (1) those who do not listen to metal do not appreciate the range and variety that it embraces, and (2) that although there are a dozen or more labeled categories of metal the boundaries are not well defined. Metal is music and as rich and varied as any genre of music. Good video, good reaction, good editing. 🎙
Such an important song for a whole region of the world. And for the rest of the world to understand. I recommend looking here on YT for a recent video about the song by IYOU channel for more perspective The old school microphone emote is a nice deep dive. Look forward to seeing more of Maggie live on twitch in the near future!
Scorpions and Klaus seem so underrated I public consciousness but they've released some absolutely amazing stuff. This song came about after the band played in the Soviet Union with a number of other Western Bands and taking inspiration from the feelings of the Iron Curtain starting to come down. It released at an opportune moment and came to symbolise the fall of the Berlin Wall
I remember as a teenager watching people tear down the wall between East and West Germany. It was a magical time to see family’s reunited and the end of the Cold War. Many younger generations don’t understand this. This is one of the best live performances of our time.
I was about 23 when the Wall came down. Living in the United States and being young-ish, and having never taken world history, the song was a real learning experience for me and I can’t listen to it without crying honestly.
The song immortalizes the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Communist Eastern Bloc. It has become the theme song for that period of history.
I love your thoughts about sparklers. This was from the 80s. We didn't have helmets, we let ourselves in from school and we drank out of the hose. Heck, we weren't sure we'd not be in a nuclear war. Sparklers were pretty low on the threat meter.
Not 80's, this was 1990 on the nose about the wall falling in Germany, the Iron Curtain lifting across Europe and an end to the Cold War. Not trying to be nitpicky but...it was kind of a big deal for the World at the time ;)
@@jasonlouis697 Don't have to get pissy. The actual date is just a tad important in this case...some (and by some I really mean pretty much everyone) considers that date one the top 5 events of the 20th century...no biggy tho
Your continued comments have absolutely nothing to do with the point of my initial statement. Your "correction" is superfluous at best and given you came back again, probably more along the lines of trolling. Anyone aware of the historical events surrounding the song will ALSO appreciate life in the 80s - which was the point. I should add, that since you've pointed out the importance of the wall falling - that happened in the 80s, not 1990 when the song came out.
@@maggiereneemusic I do not know what time it will be, depends on where you live. Is it in the US then it is around midnight here in Sweden or if you live in England then I can be with you when you broadcast live
This was one of the best examples of the right song at the right time. It captured the feeling in Europe on the brink of the end of the Cold War when everione was looking hopeful to the future, East and West, and nowhere so much as in Germany, where the big change (opening of the border between East and West Germany and unification) that would come a few month later was already palpable.
This is a great song. The best song about expressing history and the emotions of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism. Scorpions are a West German band. They captured that historic moment perfectly.
Most people of a certain age who grew up the other side of the iron curtain have a lump in their throat or a tear in their eye to this day when they hear this song, with good reason. A lot that they seemed doomed to endure was simply swept away. The late 80s and early 90s were extraordinary times. As a British kid, I knew that most of the fighting age men in my family had seen combat in WW1/2, and some didn't come home. Up to the fall of the iron curtain and Berlin Wall, it seemed natural to wonder if the missiles would come, and assume that I could find myself somewhere on the continent with a gun in my hand one day. We thought the end of the Cold War was the end of all war. Very naive, but those were the times.
It’s awesome new generations listen to our music. It is tough to try and explain what the kids of 80’s had. We didn’t have cell phones. Or very very few did, that was all still in beginning stages. Internet wasn’t a thing yet. We were enjoying MTV it was our other way besides FM radio. To hear music, besides cassettes or Albums. What was happening in Europe was on the news nightly. The Fall of the Berlin Wall was an important time in history. We knew nothing of what the people of Germany had lived with. Other then from news reports. Family that might have served over there. Or lessons in school history classes. When this video (original one) came out. It was perfect.
I was 10 when these things took place have it also run in the family since my father's family fled the gdr shortly before the wall was built. They fled on foot from somewhere Uckermark to berlin then hopped on a train south. Imagine an injured WWII soldier returned from POW camp in Russia not being able to walk properly anymore taking his 4 children between 4 and 10 walking 100km. They fled because grandfather was asked to spy on his neighbors by the STASI. I visited the GDR as a kid so this was impactful even for me at 10 years old finally reunification easier travel for the other part of the family etc. This song was my entrance to the Scorpions.
I've always loved that song. Brings back memories. Such a classic. Great choice by the Patron family on this one. Can't see what they vote for next! Glad you enjoyed it Maggie. Great job... and yes I agree sparklers in that close environment would be a bit scary. And with your long gorgeous hair... I'd be terrified too!
My best friend talked me into going to my first concert, Ted Nugent when we were 16, in '79. The opening band was "The Scorpions". This guy Is way older than me, and can still do pretty good. Is it "Axl Rose" from GnR, or Brian Johnson of ACDC. You would be surprised at what we brought to concerts, in the 80's. That's likely overseas somewhere.
This came out shortly after the wall came down, The Berlin Wall. This was close to their soul I am sure. There Country was reunited, families, friends, freedom.
OMG! Maggie.... I've been a subscriber to your channel for awhile now, when I joined you were reacting to Dimash early music and I also am a big Opera fan (and a Dear), but I had been looking for reactions on my favorite rock band of all times and WOOOHOOO!!! I found you reacting to one of the most epic ballads! I am looking forward to you listening to some more of their classics. Over 40 years of history, this band I feel is kinda underrated; they've been the inspiration to many others, they broke the barriers of language and literally had to learn English to get to the big audiences, but they have albums and songs in Japanese, German, Spanish, English. They were the first rock band to ever perform at the former USSR; the kids back then would know all of their songs from the radio only. At one point in his career vocalist Klaus Meine was within an inch of losing his voice and went through surgery. He asked his fellow band members to search for another vocalist, but they were close enough to wait for him to recover and go back Rocking like a Hurricane. I strongly recommend you find the video where he sings this very song with Jose Carreras. It's awesome!!! Loved the reaction, can't wait to see more.
This could be the second national anthem of Germany, you heard it everywhere when the Berlin wall came down. Unfortunately this is a shortened version of the song, but still beautiful. The Scorpions are still active. They will release their 19th album in February. The title track Rock Believer is already out on youtube. Maybe there‘s a chance for you to react to this one as well?
Meggie, it was many years into the past, those concerts were wild today most everything is BANNED! You came to late. in 1960's 1070's all away to 2000's concerts were so fun and enjoyable.
That was a good pick up of the melody of Vincent. I didn't know there were sparklers being used, that was another good pick. Great reaction to the Scorpions, Wind of Change. Thank you.🎤
I love this song, it's one of my favorites!🥰 The scorpion that crawled across the screen gave me a mini heart attack.😵😅 Another awesome reaction Maggie!
Can still see the masses of people literally tearing the Berlin wall down, and walking over it to freedom. I will always remember Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall. Music played a role in actually bringing people together.
It’s the history that makes this song so touching and hart felt. It was when the Berlin Wall fell and Germany was reunited! It was also a confirmation of American foreign policy and a push for freedom for the East German people to reunite with their German brothers and sisters! Very emotional time in history of Germany and our country!
The very first time I heard this was while watching a Filipino band in Singapore. I had been at sea so didn't get to hear it before that. LOVE Scorpions. Favorite song from them. I saw them live at the GSR Casino in Reno three days after Tom Petty died. A friend and I bumped into a couple of them after the show in the Casino bar and they hadn't even heard about it. STUNED would be the easiest term to use. The person you think sounds like him might be David Gates from the old 70s soft rock band "Bread"🎸
The first concert i went to was in 1982, Ratt Twisted sister and mamas boys, i was 15. In the first 5 minutes i saw this kid younger than me, maybe 12 dragging a big garbage bag filled with ice and cans of beer he was selling to the concert goers. You NEVER know what you will see at a concert lol
You Maggie is so cool,me being a guitarist,I've heard most rock music between thousands and a million times,no exaggerating, but I think you are so cool
Very disappointed that apparently no one gave you the meaning behind this song while you were watching. Not your fault; you surely weren't alive at the time, but this was a significant ballad during a time of great world change for the better. It probably would've meant more to you though than who Klaus sounds like, were you aware of the meaning. Always fun to see you react to the stuff from my era though. Thanks Maggie.
This Song is About the Berlin Wall Coming down and the end of the cold war and the reunification of Germany. And so much passion from the German Rpck Band The Scorpions
The lead singer of Scorpions the guy who's holding the mic in his hand wearing a black hat in this video his name is Klaus Meine. This song is 1 of my favorite peace/freedom song. This song was made in support of the taking down of the Berlin wall on November 9, 1989 that used to separate East & West Germany until November 9, 1989 when the Berlin wall was taken down. I can't even imagine how I'd feel if our government was to put a huge wall in the center of the USA to separate the West from the East part of the USA. People in the USA would tear the wall down just like the Germans cuz putting up a huge wall to separate the West from the East of any country is completely totally wrong for a countrie's government to do that to the citizens of it's country.
It was such a hopeful and exciting time in history. For most of my life WW3 hung over everything like a dark cloud. And right before my eyes the wall came down! It had seemed like an inviolable fixture for my whole life, and here it was being dismantled by ordinary citizens, and East German soldiers alike. This song always brings a tear to my eye remembering, it's something no one can possibly understand unless they lived through it.
LOL, you enjoyed it so much, don't know how you haven't seen it before!! Another of their iconic songs is Still Loving You, which I like better, more guitar. Keep the reactions coming, always make my day better with you in it.
unfortunately i was at a bon jovi concert very late eighties i think(WHY? i still don't know). anywho, my buddy was swayin' the bic lighter and we were surrounded by kids with way too much hairspray. one girl's head instantly exploded right before my eyes. we of course took off our t-shirts and smothered the fire as quickly as we could, but charges were filed and my buddy was prosecuted and served a jail sentence. the girl was not physically injured thankfully. she just lost a lot of hair and suffered "trauma". i was out a $35 t-shirt. i know it's not funny, but it is right...?
I think you mean "Vincent" by Don McLean ("American Pie"). And yes, in those times we didn't have any cell phones or glow sticks and so we used sparklers or lighters! (And yes, we survived it!!!!!) And as a German I have to defend our taste of music: This song was the inofficial anthem of Germany's reunification in 1989/90 and not (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) David Hasselhof's "Looking for freedom"!!!
They shortened the song, but Klaus still kicks ass. Please check out Queensryche eyes of a stranger or take hold of the flame, or silent lucidity, Geoff Tate is amazing n can do 5 octaves
OMG you also did Vincent by Jim van der Zee? Will check right after this one! By the way; he's a mailman now, didn't like the spotlights. He was in a sort of comeback show to talk about his life and sing another piece, together with other talent show winners.
This song, as I recall, was written for and about the fall of the Soviet Union and was first performed at the Glasnost concert in Moscow. If I have any of that wrong, please let me know and either what your memory is or source for the correction, I am always accepting that I COULD be wrong.
There is another very succesful and important german band you have to react too. The frontman is on the other side of the singer spectrum - he has a very low voice. It's Rammstein
Actually about the fall of the Soviet iron curtain but because the timing it because symbolically lnked to the reunification of Germany and the fall of the Berlin wall and it's unofficial theme song as well
Don't forget the great Michael Gorbatschow. I'm german. It needed 2 great statesmen, to make it happen. They did such a great job! And today? We are facing this arrogant idiot by the name or P****. So very sad!
Klaus meine the god on earth his voice enchants you no one can match your vocal power you are Klaus no one and able to imitate you they just have to bow before you with their heads down...Klaus meine il dio sulla terra la sua voce ti incanta nessuno può eguagliare la tua potenza vocale tu sei Klaus nessuno e capace di imitarti devono solo inchinarsi davanti a te a testa bassa
On this one I think you missed the forest for the trees. I can't blame you though you are just too young to have truly experienced this song. I was stationed in West Germany when the Soviet Union failed and Germany was re-united at last. The Scorpions had written this song about the Soviet people during perestroika and was an absolute master piece of song writing and singing for a very unique event of history. Outside of knowing or having lived through those times you lose out on a lot of the meaning the song has. Trying to be as fair as possible here but this was something I was right in the midst of so it is impossible for me to be objective about this. This was truly hope and change of it's time. Now we just have putin and that hope has been tarnished.
