Scot & Castle on Shap.

Compare & Contrast: The shots are synchronised on the white house near Greenholm (0:03). Remarkably, by Shap Wells underbridge (2:45) 46115 is just one loco-length ahead (roughly one second) with 1 coach more. The shots are taken from slightly different places (higher and further up the hill) next to the Victoria monument. In April, the wind was a strong south-westerly, blowing the sound towards us better, but buffeting the camera more.
Both shots are now on DVD: 46115 on Vol 28, "The Great Britain II" and 5043 on Vol 39, "Mainline 2009, GWR & BR Locomotives". More details on the web sit, as usual.

Congratulations Mark on producing this fascinating comparison between the two locos. They are very closely matched , but the Scott only just made it at the end. Different locations no matter how slight would distort the outcome either way...5* Bob

Just one small point but the LNWR calculated the maximum permitted engine weight by using the number of axles in the train. Therefore permitted tonnage varied widely with number of axles more important than weight. Perhaps in real terns regardless of mass, the extra coach behind the Scott outweighs any extra tonnage due to Pullman's behind the Castle. LNWR must have known something about it as they were hauling huge tonnages of " modern " stock behind unsuperheated just about 3P 4-4-0's.

That gets a full 5 stars for innovation. Just think of the potential doing this. A4 v Duchess, Tornado v Duke of Gloucs, Britannia v whatever. More please !!

Both cracking engines and a really inyeresting way of showing both runs. Love 7P class locos!

Yes, it had 11, castle had 10, BUT some were Pullmans, which are heavier than MK1's

Thanks for this Mark, must have taken ages to get right. I think the outcome is that we have two outstanding locos which will give some great performances over the next few years.

Only rough count but looked like the Scot had at least 1 extra coach on ?

Thanks for the kind comments, everyone. Im not going to say that one run is better than the other. Both crews did near-perfect jobs. They got their trains over the summit within the schedule without over-exerting the locos or themselves, and in so doing provided great entertainment for passengers and on-lookers. I think The Great Britain includes 2 Pullan cars, behind the white-roofed "LMS Club Car". It's harder to tell because they're pinted maroon, like on the old Midland Rly

One of the most entertaining steam videos I've ever seen. A true labour of love, well done.
