I remember watching this match live at the time. Lou Macari was on the BBC panel discussing the game at half time. Asked what he would do to improve a poor Scottish performance if he were Jock Stein, Macari came back with the razor sharp response "I would keep the band on".

Three things illustrate how old this match is - cuboid posts, pitchside adverts for Jesus Jeans (what?) and Dalglish receiving no punishment for a tackle on Clemence that'd probably produce a straight red these days.

Even though we (Scotland) lost this game, after the pish served up last night it is nice to see footage of a Scotland side actually attempting to attack!!

Sheer Hell! Tidy teams both. Would like to see the whole game: a Gemmil to Strachan transition. No Souness? Aitken for Scotland? Coppel underrated as was Mariner, love/ hated Trevor Brooking. Transitional times. We had good teams!

Have to assume Souness was injured. Aitken was only 21 and not fully established in the team. Wouldn't become a mainstay till about 1984/5. Strachan wasn't a replacement for Gemmill as he played wide on the right. The two played in the same side against Sweden three months later and Strachan scored the goal in a 1-0 win. Gemmill's last game for Scotland was in 1981 against Israel I think. Asa Hartford played alongside Souness in the 82 WC but was no spring chicken himself (31) and thereafter, Jim Bett and Paul McStay would emerge in 82/83/84 alongside Aitken and Strachan.

It's hard to imagine Scotland were ten wins ahead of England in the head to head of this fixture as recently as the late 50s early 60s. Scary to see the difference in quality now...

Ive never heard a fellow Scot,say we have the best fans in the world.But ive been in many pubs.Where the other fans said we were.Also our fans won best fans awards for Euro 92 and World cup 98.Pretty good going knowing we are welcolme everythere.Just like the Irish,whoese fans have won these awards to.

Hear, hear. Spot on. We could be great. No reason why not. Certainly not geography. Holland is a wee country, Denmark too, like you say. Compared to Brazil, Uruguay (twice WC winners) is tiny. I've a lot of faith (&hope!) in Craig, too. Hopefully he'll get players wanting to play for Scotland again, not feeling obliged to. To me, international football has always been the peak of the game. Tends to be sneered at by millionaire set nowadays. Let's go, Scotland.

if my memory serves me Cherry started his career with Huddersfield and played his 'England years' when at Leeds. As Bradford is between these 2 places the u might be correct.

There would have been a few thousand plenty of cheers when england scored. In those days England weren't given many tickets for hampden . Dont know if wembley games were all ticket, probably not!

Did U know: Just prior to Argentina '78, bookies had Scotland as short as 8/1 as eventual winners? 8/1!!! Seems fantastical now, but that's how highly regarded we were after Germany '74....
