So what are we to do? Petty crime is 200 or less but the victim might need that long to feed their kids yet your suggesting they go free and can you not see how that would increase the rate of which it happens vastly?
Government make a lot of money keeping the jails full. And allways over fill them at voting time, because there all in Labour constituencies! (shocking isn't it?)
Met a crack head in Glasgow who said he can’t count how many times he’s been inside but he’s never been in for more than a year at a time, had been to barlinnie and lowmoss
Student accommodation where people get boiling water laced with sugar and bleach thrown over their face…student accommodation where people are regularly bullied to the point they off themselves. Student accommodation where people come out addicted to hard drugs…ok mate. The loss of your liberty, your job, home, family and relationships is the sentence. Not the horrific things that happen inside the walls.
I could offer to accommodate a few prisoners in my home, to ease the overcrowding, but I'm afraid it wouldn't be so comfortable. There is no pool table, prisoners would have to wait a month to see a doctor and I don't have an x-box.
The problem with our prison services in the UK as a whole is the daily mail government's we've had, who are more interested in locking people up in a system with a pathetic education and a none existent rehabilitation system just to make them look like they are fighting crime, instead of actually fighting the causes of crime instead. I truly hope this new labour government can do better, but I won't be holding my breathe.
thats the point. prisoners shouldn't have benefits of any kind to be honest. at least in the US life means life, UK you kill someone and get out in 15 years or less
@@robertwallace4393mate what about the Scottish/British & us governments They are the real ones who should be doing life. When you think about it. Obviously you’re that intelligent, you’ll work out why yourself, your that sheepish type, bet you still believe your own governments never brought down the towers that’s how blind you are son! Think before you speak
@@robertwallace4393 us life does not mean life rofl; as well if they are in for life there need to be certain Humane standards that are followed. These are humans after all ( it does cost a lot more to house “lifers” just FYI mate so actually keeping people in prison costs taxpayers more…apart from it being less beneficial to society overall when reintegration fails and folks that get out reoffend) We should be teaching people how to be better in society and learn skills to use outside IN society to survive and be productive members; not institutionalizing people and having them learn how to be better criminals…that is not a benefit to society it’s a disservice to us and to society overall👍💯✌️
@robertwallace4393 The prison system in America doesn't work to deter crime and is extremely expensive because they are for profit. Norway has the most effective prison system and one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world.
Andi Brierley: really impressed with him. 👍 We must look at prison as limiting freedom and genuine rehabilitation, rather than punishment as revenge. Obviously victims and the public must be protected, but also agree with Timpson that only the very most serious and violent crimes need long incarcerations. The causes of crime are mostly poverty, family problems, mental health, undiagnosed neurodivergence etc. Not dealing with this brings generational consequences for families, deprives individuals of a fair chance, and the economy of workers. Everyone loses at rhe moment, and the prison system needs reforming.
The truth is the UK prison population grew by 90% between 1995-2010. Two thirds of prisons were already overcrowded by 2009. The roots of these issues are longstanding.
I agree shoplifters shouldnt be in prison at all ..No use fining them either , as dont have money to pay They would rather do time than pay a fine > so what next ?
I heard claims that victims charities have voiced concern but immediately you went into an interview of the prison service's CE. Who are these philanthropists opposing people getting out of prison? Its quite a claim to not substantiate
Is it wrong that I look round and see society crumbling and think that perhaps the "rehabilitative" approach is not exactly working? Going to prison should be a punishment, not a vacation.
Yes it is. In case you haven't realised we've had 14 years without the rehabilitative approach and look where that's gotten us. When society is crumbling, peoples situations worsen, their mental health starts to get worse and so they turn to drugs and/or crime to cope which leads to further bad decisions. I think its cruel that society sets people up to fail and is perfectly happy to just discard them and sweep them away for the benefit of a wealthy few.
They dont get rehabilitated. There is no rehabilitation in our prisons right now. They don't learn how to make better choices or sort drug problems. They're released with same problems they went in with.
water usage/cost is so cheap, that adding meters/individual billing to the "system" makes it more expensive. I still save water even though I don't have a meter. And I don't understand your "at least" - I support what was shown in the documentary
the whole mindset has to change. The focus on the vast majority of offenders should be reform and punishment. It costs so much money to imprison someone and even more when they become repeat. Everyone wins by trying to integrate them back into society. The choice is between the US and Scandinavia
I canny believe they give the prisoners bunk beds, wee tv’s and Xbox’s, looks more like the shared bedroom of 2 kids than a prison cell, hardly serving hard time are they? 😂
Until our government deal with root problems in our society and mass illegal immigration which is swelling our population to the point all services like the NHS, housing, mental health support, drug rehabilitation is on its knees and waiting lists for homes or help is out of hand, then the jail issues won't get better they are just going to continue rising. These issues aren't new either this has been left to get to this point with very little effort to stop it getting to this point. What definitely doesn't help is this soft touch on prisons, like the cell you seen, tv, Xbox, xbox games collection bigger than most people will ever have, full of privileges and snacks list goes on. To a lot of guys in there it's a better place to be than outside prison and unfortunately that's a fact and why as soon as they get released they commit crime purposely get caught to get sent right back. Tackling these kinds of issues would be a good start to ease number's.
They arent being jailed for 1 shoplifting or one drug offence. They sre serial offenders ffs man. Shops would be as well shutting up as its basically licence to loot.
One of the biggest problems prisoners have when they come out ,is like with many people and that's knowere to live ,there prioritizing the boat people because want to get the 9 billion a day bill down ,for them first whilst our people find it impossible to get a home .fkn sad country .
In Australia there is a Northern Territory. The UK should leased land to build Detention Centre for Prisoners transferred there. Australia would be able to populate the vast land in the NT.
