You know in the first part when she said it was New Year and that the Fridge (I dont remember having a fridge in the 60s?) was emptied, I thought I bet he just stayed put in the house so he could escape when there wasnt anyone around. People are actively visiting and "First Footing" neighbours in Scotland sometimes until the 3rd or 4th January so it makes sense to lie low until the festivities died down. We celebrate New Year much more than Christmas in Scotland.

Thank you so much for covering this case Eleanor! My grandad was a journalist at the time and this was the biggest story he worked on. He sat in court and observed the entire proceedings and recorded them (via shorthand), before phoning the press office and relaying the details of this case every day. What he heard in that courtroom must have been horrifying as he heard all of the grim details, before breaking the story to the public. He died when I was really young so it's interesting for me to get that insight into his job. I like to think he would have been really into true crime himself considering his job. Thank you again for coving this case

The way he goes from so many months between crimes to only leaving a couple of days between and the switch in victimology too is interesting. I don’t get how he was able to stay so controlled for months at a time between the murders and then start to escalate so fast. I also find it interesting how he tried to insert himself into the investigation but only to the extent he wanted, making sure no pictures of him were published so it wasn’t like it was for attention but more like personal satisfaction.
@janetpendlebury6808
@janetpendlebury6808 3 года назад
He was a psychopath, they love the attention and think they are cleverer than the police. He was also a very intelligent person. He escalated from sexual assaults to murders after he had spent 9 years in prison from the age of 16. Who knows how many other victims there were before the ones that he was charged with. He loved taunting the police, they knew he did the murders and he knew they could not prove it. There is a really good tv programme called In Plain Sight, about the detective that never gave up and eventually got him.

I grew up in a different country to my two siblings who were left with my grandparents for 3 years. When my parents and I moved back and we were all reunited, I suddenly found myself with two extra siblings in a country which language I did not speak, and a culture I did not understand. I was 5 years old. Not to mention my siblings who were younger than myself and the trauma they suffered. I was bullied too for about a year or two before I moved school. I became a forensic psychologist. Not a serial killer. My siblings turned out fine too. Well, none of us go around killing people. Sometimes I do wonder if some evil is indeed in the blood.

Your probably not a psychopath like Peter Manuel was. I think that makes a difference! Not that all psychopath's are killers either, but a combination of that, and a not so good upbringing with parents that did not give him boundaries etc etc. all go towards making him what he was. He enjoyed hurting people and got away with it, when he was caught and sent to prison, he came out and decided to murder instead so there would be no one to tell on him.
@shoujofanatic
@shoujofanatic 3 года назад
@Smeraldo Great Job! 👍 So cool that you made something of yourself. There are people who face the same traumas that don't turn out as horrible as this guy 😡 He was so evil! Also his fiance canceling the wedding is a "trauma" quite similar to what Ted Bundy experienced which is also creepy since they both were "charming" narcissists that represented themselves in court. I wonder if they had the same personality types and psychological disorders. The one caveat to Manuel's situation though, is his physical head trauma and the electocution that almost killed him, I wonder if those really messed him up moreso than his genetic predisposition, poor role models, and his supposed traumatic events 🤔

I appreciate you sharing..I often watch some of these cases when their up bringing is blamed and it makes me feel a kind of way about it. I also had trauma growing up that to this day my mental health team have no idea where to start..I've never even thought of taking my experiences out on another human being or animal for that matter. When I'm at my worst I can barely wash my face and get dressed for the day let alone going out to harm another. I find it a little frustrating as these people go so far beyond the norm and yet it's considered the norm. Just because bad up bringing seems to be a pattern of killers ...doesn't mean it makes a killer. There was a case where there was a young mother that gave birth and as soon as she looked, held or felt the baby in her arms she know for some reason that it was evil. Yes that could be post partem depression..or it could be a mother's instinct as he did become a killer who showed signs from young. Wish I could remember the case I'm talking about.

Xenophobia was an even stronger force back in the day. The internet is actually largely to thank for the world becoming a more accepting place since people are so much more exposed to people and places and ways of life that are different from theirs. The connection really does breed understanding.

Hey Eleanor, I have a case, that id be really interested in you covering. It’s the case of Lars Mittank, he’s from Germany, took a vacation in Bulgaria and disappeared there. He suffered an injury to his ear and due to that injury, he had to stay in Bulgaria without his friends and that’s when he disappeared. Lars has been missing since 2014 and his mother and the German police (and private investigators) are still looking for him. One of the main theorys is, that he lost his memory through the combination of his injury and the medication he got for it. So there’s a possibility that he’s still out there, not knowing who he is and that his mother is looking for him. I hope, you see this and that you’re interested in it, because I’d love for this case to get more exposure :)

27:00 I grew up with a dad diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder and this is too familiar, everytime he’d do something little it became some huge adventure where he was so great and we had to stand there embarrassed as kids listening to him talking himself up because we couldn’t say anything or he’d blow up on us. He’d straight up lie for no reason to make himself sound great.

Hi Eleanor! I hope you're doing well! There's a very recent ongoing unsolved case here in the state of Georgia where a woman and her dog were murdered in piedmont park. The police never released any details other than she was found at the entrance of the park and was stabbed in a gruesome way. (Though people have been spreading some stuff around about her mutilation.) Another detail released was that the cameras in the park weren't working the night that she was murdered. People have been speculating that it's the work of a serial killer, but the police came out and said that it will cause false fear. Although many people in Georgia know about it, it hasn't spread too much outside of the state and the killer still hasn't been found. I know you have a lot of comments to look over so I don't expect you to see this, but if you do hopefully you can bring awareness to the case!

Hi Eleanor, Can you do the case of Gregory Villemin? He was a 4 yr old french boy murdered in 1984. His murder is still unsolved. He was abducted from his home and killed 4km away and the case was a media mess in France for decades due to anonymous threatening calls to the family for years before the murder. It’s a truly interesting case and it’s heartbreaking that ‘Little Gregory’ as he’s called by the media never got justice. Please and thank you

My grandma actually let Peter Manual into her home as her father was a minister who helped everyone in need, she was young at this time and let him in as he said he was there to see her father. She was home alone so went upstairs and waited for her father to return. Once he arrived they had a short conversation and Peter left. She was one lucky little girl. - side note, he seemed to be fascinated by a large radio that was in the home and my grandma made a point of telling me this.

I heard a lot about this case growing up. My papa (grandfather or whatever) lived close by him and Manuel used to talk to his sister and sometimes walk her home from her bus stop I’m pretty sure. One time he even paid for her bus ticket apparently but was never violent towards her. My papa often wondered what made her different to him, because to her he was a random neighbour who was pleasant to her but clearly to him she was worth not murdering ?? She was like a young teenage girl as well. Sadly she died before I could ever meet her but my papa always told me the story.

I think she meant more of if it jolts the brain into a certain pattern of thinking by potentially frying the part of the brain that processes the pros and cons of an action.
@angiestalesfromwales1590
@angiestalesfromwales1590 3 года назад
its not necessarily that it causes serial killers, more that it just messes with the brain and the risk assessment part of the brain. it's likely he already had these thoughts but his common sense stopped him, however after his pre frontal cortex was fried, he didn't have impulse control. electroshock therapy was and is still used because although they don't know why it works, for some people it does seem to help them, especially those with psychosis and similar mental illnesses. the nodes are carefully placed in ECT, but these 2 serial killers obviously didn't have carefully placed nodes and basically did a home version of ECT. this long waffle of mine is to say essentially they had these thoughts but the electric shock mucked around with their brain and essentially removed common sense and made them more impulsive so common sense didn't stop them anymore
@ghostblud7423
@ghostblud7423 3 года назад
well no but in a lot of brain damage cases it can damage certain parts of your brain which causes massive changes in people. my dad was a great father and then he suffered two brain haemorrhages and he became really aggressive and abusive towards me and my mum. if you check out the case of Phineas G. Gage it details how much he changed after his injury. i think what eleanor means is that maybe the brain injuries they sustained was the “turning point” for them graduating to much more serious crimes

@@mehreen5338 no it's in this case. There was a taxi driver that was murdered & later on the police found evidence that linked it to Peter Manuel but it linked to him after Manuel was already dead so couldn't be questioned about it (obviously the actual murder happened whilst he was alive & free) & there have been doubts. One of the opposing points is that it would be more likely to be someone more familiar with the area, my original comment was in reference to that.
