Scotland's most remote music festival on an island in Orkney?

My parents have been farming a rare breed of seaweed-eating sheep on a remote Scottish island called Auskerry for nearly half a century, but age and ill health is forcing them to face a future away from their island home. With so much still to do on the farm, I've left my job as a TV reporter in Cardiff, Wales for three and a half months in order to help. I've taken a camera and some lenses and decided to make a RU-vid series to show what life is really like on the island where I grew up, and was named after. In episode four, part two, I have the pleasure of sharing the complete joy we feel every summer when we host the Auskerry bagpiping championships on the island. It's been a nearly-annual tradition for 25 years, bringing around 20 musicians and friends out on boats from the Orkney mainland to play music, eat amazing local food and have a few drinks! We sing a traditional whaling song by the skeleton of a Northern Bottlenose whale that washed ashore in the early 90s and then the winner of the championships is unveiled by mum. It's a sad goodbye until we see a pod of dolphins...
Please share and subscribe for future episodes. I'd love to see your comments on the series so far as it's the first time I've done something like this.
Shot on my new Sony A7C (28mm, 35-70mm, 70-180mm lenses)

The boat leaving the island was sad. It may be their last time. It reminds of when I used to visit my grandmother when she was in her 70's and 80's and each time I'd pull out of gravel drive of our farm onto the road I'd shed a few tears wondering if it could be a last goodbye. Thankfully, in her late 80's my grandmother, in her own way, asked for help and I went to live with her on the farm once again, and cared for her the last three years of her life. I'm so thankful I got to spend those last years with her.

You had the honor not many people are given, caring for a loved one in their last days. I cared for my Mother and it was time that I treasure above anything I have ever done in my life. Thank you for taking care of your Gran! Many blessings to you from Tennessee, USA

@@Cook-hb2nf Thank you for your kind words. My grandmother was a very independent woman, and didn't like asking for help. I knew that. Obviously my cousins who lived 40 minutes away from her didn't. I was living 1000 miles away, but I'd make the journey to see her several times a year to do things like trim the hedges, and bush hog the fields. Them cousins were worthless, but they sure were there ready to snatch and grab when she died. My grandmother was my best friend and I hope she is the one who greets me when I go home.I totally agree with you that time spent caring was the time we treasure most. Not a lot of people out there like us. I always told myself I'd be the one caring for her and knew if I didn't I'd feel like the dirtyest dog alive.
@Cook-hb2nf
@Cook-hb2nf 7 месяцев назад
@@Yosef_Morrison I had that same conversation with myself and knew that I would be the one caring for my Momma. My oldest sister was born with special needs and I cared for her as well whenever my Momma passed. It takes special people with a caring heart and soul to do what you and I did. I struggled at times doing it because I was a single parent but I look at it like this, we know that we did our absolute best by our loved ones and they were cared for with the utmost care and had the best quality of life. If it had been your cousins or in my case siblings I would always wonder if she would have gotten the care that she deserved. She will be there waiting for you and y'all will walk into heaven hand in hand ❤️ God bless you!

@@Cook-hb2nf I know we all may have a romanticised version of how heaven will be because the Bible leaves out a world of details about it. For all my Bible learning I try to understand it all to be prepared. What's your story being a gal from Tennessee following a Scottish channel? I'm Scottish on my mom's side so I am drawn to knowing more about the land of my ancestors.

Hamish, thank you to ALL who joined in this gathering for sharing this day with us. I'm reminded of times when my own community gathered to share food and company and song. ...and we, the next elder generation, have allowed those times to slip away. ...we need to revive the practice and make it tradition again. God bless each and every one of you! To the younger generation I would strongly suggest ...don't let this tradition go. Be diligent in keeping this day going. ❤

You all were treated to something very special. I am from Alaska & have seen a lot of wildlife. Some many, many times. But I must say that whenever I've been present when pods of dolphins or whales have played & breached, it takes my breath away. And I know that I was most fortunate to have had that time. Wonderful video with great music, good people, & much laughter. Thank you for sharing it.

The more of these i watch, the more i see all this very sadly coming to an end. I know life doesn't last forever but i see you recording this to preserve those memories forever. It'll be a sad day when that boat leaves for the last time, leaving the island deserted. It's a huge step, but would you ever consider relocating there yourself, for a complete change of lifestyle, and continue your parent's legacy?

Thank you for your message! Yeah it’s very hard for us as a family to accept that things are changing a lot with the health challenges we face. The dolphins are Risso's (Grampus griseus) an incredible species not commonly seen from land as they usually inhabit deeper open water. They're as large as Bottlenose dolphins but lack the pronounced beak of many other dolphin species. They are typically a dark grey in colour, but over their life, they lose their dark coloration becoming more white in appearance due to constant scratching of each other with their teeth (known as rake marks). They're a fascinating and spectacular species to see, I had the great pleasure of studying them in the Isle of Man where there is a rare resident inshore population.

British woollens used to be the finest in the world, now farmers can’t get enough to cover the cost of shearing them, I believe they used to get a European subsidy, that old boris and Sunak were going to replace. And we know what happened with that. I hope we can get to a position of getting the farmers atleast a 50p profit on a fleece over the cost of shearing and beer the shearers drink. (I’m not counting the Aussies.) It looks like you may have some decisions to make about reporting on others stories. Or live a story of your own based around what your parents started.
