NC500 E10: Walking an 8 mile solo round trip to Scotland’s most idyllic beach, the secluded & unspoilt Caribbean style Sandwood Bay Beach close to the North Coast 500 in north west Scotland.

Sandwood Bay Beach is Scotland’s most idyllic & secluded beach - it’s a great half-day walk if you’re looking for things to do in north west Scotland. The trek is a 4 mile (6.5km) walk from the nearest car park (Blairmore Car Park) and even before I left the car I felt like I was in the middle of nowhere.
As I set about joining the trail that feeling only grew. Thankfully the pathway is well marked and easy to follow, it passes by empty barren hills and isolated lochs as it weaves its way down towards the coastline. I enjoyed the walk there! It was mostly flat and I found it hard to take my eyes off the beautiful bleakness that surrounded me.
After hiking for over an hour I could see the blues and yellows of the mile long beach in the distance, like an oasis in the desert. The golden sand and turquoise water is straight out of the Caribbean - not something I was expecting to see in the UK but a breathtaking sight nonetheless.
Come and walk to Sandwood Bay Beach with me, experience some authentic Scottish weather and hear a story about an RAF Spitfire from Castletown that crashed on the beach in 1941.

Hi Grant, thanks for watching my videos of the North Coast 500 - I'm glad you've enjoyed the trip so far, it's definitely a wonderful driving route with an almost endless list of things to see along the way! You're going to love it if you do it next year!! Thanks for the feedback on the style of video, I do try and visit a combination of both popular, touristy places as well as the lesser known bits that most people just drive past without knowing they're there. If you have any questions about the trip just let me know, would be happy to help. All the best!

@@MattWhitingsEurope O thats a lovely & helpful reply, I,ll be tempted to be in and out of the car every mile, like I have on my other trips 😃 ,Im glad you went to some non popular bits, I like them bits seeing the local people's areas. Me and my wife doing a 2 day coach trip Glasgow/Edinburgh this October. £79 each. To get are toes across the Boarder. You keep safe, hope this covid keeps its head down so we can get out seeing the sites( Masks on) Cheers Grant.

@MattWhitingsEurope 3 года назад
Thanks Grant, wow £79 sounds like a great deal, I hope the weather is kind to you and you get a nice taster for your North Coast 500 trip the following year! Ha, I know that urge to stop the car every few miles and snap a few photos, like you I just can't help myself but I guess that's the advantage of being in your own car - you can stop as many times as you like without upsetting anyone (excluding other passengers and those behind you haha!). Yes masks on and let's get some sightseeing done this summer! All the best.

Yes it was lovely to see the beach and all that scenery, just a shame about the howling wind that followed me for the duration of the hike. It was so bad I decided against getting the drone out. Wonderful area though!

I saw a Rick Steves video showing places you went to recently in Scotland. Pretty cool I knew what he was talking bout cus of your videos but enjoy your detailed views of outdoors much better. Need to send you a Boston hat, LOL.

I was watching a Rick Steeves video just a few days ago, it was one of his recently uploaded videos from Switzerland - really made me want to head back there! Love his videos - I'm a big fan. Thanks for your kind words about my video, I'm honoured you would even compare it to Rick's work, glad you found it enjoyable! Haha yeah I was really digging out the old hats from my travels around North America on this trip - will have to look and see if I bought anything from Boston! There may be a Cheers hat in my collection haha.

@@MattWhitingsEurope I just notice sports hats as following sports and traveling are my favorite things to do. Have traveled ALOT but never Switzerland. Watched several travel videos on it and would like to one day. May go to Mexico City in the fall.

Very nice, I heard today that Mexico is open for business so it might be the perfect place to get to at the moment. Switzerland is definitely worth a visit if you're in Europe - it's expensive but for good reason.

Interesting about the Spitfire engine would like to see that on our NC500 trip in May You need a dead cat for your camera, I use one and they are great cuts a lot of the wind out

Yes it's a fascinating story and a beautiful beach. Definitely recommended if you're driving the route. It was so peaceful and quiet! I actually did have a micromuff on the camera but it's a small one because I was using the on board microphone, I think without it you wouldn't have been able to hear me at all. Which dead cat do you use? Thanks for the information.
