@Stuart Penman No, the Roman name for Ireland was Hibernia. Scotia comes from "Scoti" which, you're right, referred to the Irish, specifically the Gaelic pirates who terrorized Roman Britain. Recall of course that the Irish settled part of Scotland (Dal Riata). It was from this group that the name Scotland comes. If Scotia, in this context, means "Ireland" then "Scotland" means "Ireland".

Quite a good account of how the United Kingdom came to be formed, but tells us very little of Scotland's role in the Empire: e.g. the development of modern economic theory by Scottish intellectuals, the Scottish diaspora or the engineering, extractive and manufacturing industries e.g. James Watt's refinement of the steam engine or Clydeside shipbuilding.

@Tiny mod Wales was a country founded in 1056. Shortly afterwards it was revoked of that title as it was conquered by England. However, in December of 2011, Wales was officially recognised as a country. Because Wales was conquered way before the idea of the "United Kingdom", it's flag is not incorporated into the Union Jack, as when the UK was formed it was considered part of England, not its own country.

I'm a Scot born, bred and raised, and I think this is one of the best summaries of Scottish history I have ever seen. All the main points are covered, if only briefly. To be honest, you don't even have to ask. I have watched many of your videos several times. This is very well written and presented, and as a Scotsman, i learned some more of our history today. This means can forgive the misleading title, dubious pronunciation (never easy for a non native) and geographical issues. Good job!

It's not misleading. Scotland raped and pillaged a good chunk of the world as the UK. The only thing that seperates them from Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Spain and Israel, other Germanic countries, is at least they weren't sadistic and saying "scumbag" all the time You're such an idiot. Now to be fair, I've known Americans of Scottish descent, not many actual Scots, however I knew one, and while he wasn't a mean guy, he was pretty standoffish. If he was like that, imagine his racist family. English are not the uptight ones, at least not the ones who aren't white, meaning the Roman/French descended ones.

How is that a fantasy? It's a 100% fact, Gaelic culture originated from the Gaels who are from Ireland. Scottish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, and Manx all are derived from Old Irish. In northern Ireland most Mc names are from the north, the north was the Kingdon of Dal Riata which included much of Scotland, that's why the Gaels of Scotland have Mac and Mc names and not O', because they descend from Northern Irish clans, you can see Scotland from the north of Ireland on clear days, its proven fact.

@@MrVipasana of course different groups settlet in Ireland to make the Irish, but they adapted to their environment mixed with the other groups and created a separate genetic group, everyone descends from one cell organism and aquatic life, doesn't mean we still are, the highlands and western scotland is genetically Gaelic/Irish.

Origin myths almost all come from an event that happened in history, the Scots of Gaelic culture themselves say that is their origin. The book of invasions is the orgin story of the Irish, it was taken as fact for a long time, than for a brief few hundred years it was considered a christian propaganda story, until recent evidence shows major population changes and new dna groups being brought to Ireland mirroring the "myths", especially the Tuatha De Dannan and Milesains. Theres another myth that dark haired irish descend from the survivors of the spanish armada, this has been disproved, however it has also been proven that the dark hair gene of Ireland did originate in Iberia where the Milesians are said to have come from. I am from Scotland and I like being in the uk. My clan McCallum (in the past they were known as Malcolm) My clan has always been loyalists in the Jacobite rebellion they sided with Clan Campbell along with other loyalists clans. It’s nice that you talk about the U in UK.

Brilliant video! I'm always looking for any new documentaries on Scotland because I think there's a lot of unknowns and disagreements on our history which can leave things all too confusing when you're growing up. I'm from a town right next to the western isles and I have always felt that there is so much lost history around my area, makes me want to start digging for more info!

It was the William the Bastard of Normandy, that invaded England and then Ireland, that built up all those 12 century castle ruins, still standing in the Irish/English Countryside, In Ireland they became more Irish than the Irish themselves. The Franco Normans in England made the French Language the National Language until the Angles and Saxon Danes took over.

only in the last half of the video what we consider the British empire to be was in existence of the British empire was it more than Ontario,Quebec the British isles themselves and for a hundred years or so the 13 colonies the British empire was not what we think of it as until the 17th century and he covers history from the 1400s through to the modern day so yeah was it misleading yes but there is a reason why he only talked about the overseas empire in the last 15 minutes there wasn't much to talk about until the 17 hundreds.

Piggy /Andrew It is important, but the title suggests that the video is going to be about Scotland’s role in Britain’s worldwide empire. I get that context has to be laid down, and that compressing centuries into 5-10min is challenging (to say the least). That being said, I feel that a name like “Scotland’s relationship with England” would’ve better served this video.

Well researched and informative video. You could have touched more on Scotland’s role in slavery and North America (I.e the Tobacco Lords etc ). Sadly a lot of contemporary Scottish historians are nationalists who seek to gloss over the parts of the empire that are unsavoury that Scots had a part in, portraying it as a mostly English endeavour and presenting us as an oppressed people rather than enthusiastic partners. Nonetheless, really good video!

The leading pro-independence historian Tom Devine has done a great deal to highlight the role of Scots in the more sordid aspects of empire. You engage in a we bit of propaganda yourself. You suggest that supporters of independence are nationalists. Nationalism implies a great deal more than the right of self determination. There are very few nationalists among SNP members and voters. I have given up on expecting any honesty from Unionists.

John Kelly Terrible straw man. A nationalist in Scottish politics refers to Nationalism within the context of Scottish politics. I.e, Scottish nationalist party, civic nationalism, pro-independence. She was throwing crap, hoping some would stick. Just as you call the the SNP, the Scottish Nationalist Party, when its official name is the Scottish National Party. The SNP is no more nationalist than any progressive European social democratic party. There are nationalists in the Scottish context. The Unionist parties are British Nationalists. One party that is safe from having its name taken literally is the Liberal Democrats - now neither liberal nor democrat.

There are just as many of us High & Low Scots; living in Canada as in the auld country....7,000,000 strong and growing!... My family landed at the RN's Newfoundland Station at Qudi Vidi, with the Royal Navy in 1790... We were thankfully then granted 350 acres on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, in 1815, for 'Services Rendered' against Napoleon and those pesky Yankee raiders. Slain'te.🍁🍻

@@RickBrode Alot of scots have Irish ancestry so even the 16 million scottish americans including the ''scots''Irish are in reality also of Irish ancestry. McGarty being a Irish surname for example. Just see this as hypocritical how the ulster-scots who make up 5 million in America are grouped with the scots as opposed to 40 million Irish Americans who came mostly from the 1800s famine, can be labeled as such but not the scots of Irish ancestry, another scot of Irish ancestry is Monroe, yet no one would call the Monroe clan Irish-scots, so why scots-Irish?

@@tillerman7272 No we didn't. Our elite betrayed us, the Scottish people did not want to join the union and there were riots for weeks after the union was formed. The English crown later abolished our parliament which led to the jacobite rebellion that was crushed. We only got our parliament back in the late 1990s. I am Scottish, not British and 80% of Scots also feel this way according to the recent census. Scotlands role in the British empire was one as a colony. Our elite only joined because of English embargoes on Scotland and the Alien act, the Scottish people were never consulted, only a small number of oppurtunistic Scots (hardly scots, most were anglified scots who were educated in private schools isolated from the native Scottish population, these people still use the word Scot as a slur among themselves.) To pretend like Scotland was some equal partner in the empire is to whitewash our history as a colony, a few opportunistic English educated Scots does not make Scotland responsible for the empire and the same can be said for Ireland or Wales.

@@thevis5465 Be that as it may, the Empire still made Scotland very rich (At least, the Lowlands, not so much the Highlands) However, I've always thought that if the Jacobites had succeeded, putting Charles Stuart on the Scottish throne and dissolving the union, Scotland would have been able to use its oil in the North Sea for its own gain and would have a similar quality of life what the nordic countries have today, so perhaps Scotland would have become rich anyway

The union really helped us with nothing at all, the lowlands is a post industrial hellscape due to the empire, all our taxes get pumped into london, we have very little power to fix our societal problems. Scotland was not helped by the empire, only its landowner elite were and they make up a miniscule fraction of the population, most of Scotlands land is owned by a few hundred people. The union has only been a hindrance and especially recently with the oil and how we were lied to about Scotland not being able to join the EU if it became independent and then the English turning around and voting us out of the EU. In fact Scots actually did vote for independence in 2014, it was english people living here (they make up 10% of the population in Scotland) that pushed the vote to a no. There is no real democracy in the UK, we ARE and always have been a colony.

Worth noting, the enlightenment in Scotland was not a result of French and English enlightenment. In fact, Voltaire specifically cites Scottish thinkers as the inspiration behind his works.

England wasn't responsible for the lion's share of the formation and administration of the empire, as you state. The Union of Crowns between Scotland and England occurred in 1603 when James VI of Scotland became also James I of England and Ireland. He henceforth became James VI and I. The Kingdoms remained distinct realms until The Union of Parliaments between Scotland and England in 1707. Thereafter, all affairs of, Government, Parliament and, of course, the British Empire were decided by British Members of Parliament. In effect, there was no Scotland and England, as distinct political entities, at least, after 1707. Since then we've had a British Monarchy, British Government, British House of Commons, British House of Lords, British Parliament, and British State. Some people, mainly Americans, refer to the 'Queen of England'. This is inaccurate as there hasn't been a Queen of England since 1707. Also, some often describe Britain as 'England'. I watched an American produced documentary about WWII some time ago ago and the English narrator alluded to "the English Royal Navy". Shocking, and very offensive to proud Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish British people.

England having 80%+ of the UK's population is obviously going to get more representation but Scottish cities like Edinburgh and Aberdeen have the highest incomes of any city in the UK except London. Glasgow is the 3rd largest economy in the UK beating its rival Manchester which has a similar population, and at the height of the empire, Glasgow was the "second city of the empire" dominating the tobacco trade world-wide. Edinburgh alone has 100+ more millionaires than the English city Birmingham which has 700,000+ more people. There's your disapproval.

I am an Englishman and I must say how grateful I am for my Scottish ancestors and my brothers up north. They have played such an important role in British history, and yet it seems whenever I speak to others about the British empire (or the United Kingdom in general) it’s always just England they seem to refer to, without even seeming to know there is a difference between Great Britain and England.

the scots have been in amerikay since the 1500s(mainly lowlanders. then the british army hired scots highland clans to help fight the spanish and were given large tracts of land in return. one battle was that of..fort king george i believe.

clans were around alot longer than from the late middle ages , throughout history going back to pictish times . look at the individual history of surnames with 'Mac' in them and you will get an idea . Norman influence in the middle ages made the clan stucture more organised, and it evolved to more modern times but had already been in place .

I can trace my family back to 1745 (clan D'hud Gaelic for David) the 'son as affixed when translated in English (sons of clan david) the root name was Clan Chattan (c.1314) the era of the Bruce. I myself was named after a distant relatives clan, the clan Strachan (pronounced Stra-hawn) and the Strachan-Davidson combination has gone unbroken since 1745. My son has the honour of the name and has said he will also (when the chance arises) bestow the same name to his children. Thank you for a great, nay excellent quality video.

Yes, it's in Patagonia. The original colony almost starved but the Argentinians helped them out. I think there's more of a mix of Spanish and Welsh in most of the area today. People of Spanish Argentinian descent in the area also speak the same Spanish/Welsh mix.

Good series on Scottish history. It is a small but complicated country as seen by it's history. Always in a struggle for its identity and independence over its larger Southern Cousin. Scotlands future history will be impossible to predict, it will take many turns and twists in the future but whether that is part of the UK or not will be a close one. The World has shrunk considerably due to Globalisation, if you are not in that club then things may get difficult and so it may be for an independent Scotland. Scotland should be better off as part of the Union, but the Union has withered. There is no love or respect for it, as the UK media keeps bleating on about disrespectful Scot's, Welsh and Northern Irish it is actually the changing and uncaring face of the people of London and Westminster that are destabilising the Union. London is more interested in becoming the next Singapore and a World City than governing the island of Great Britain, meaning the other nations and many parts of England also either take control of their own destiny or allow Westminster to lead. However, like I said, Westminster or London is more interested in itself and the interests of those who are part of that inner circle, this will be the undoing of the UK. NI will go first, then Scotland. I hope Wales finds a way to protect itself, England will be fine in one form or another but Wales will need to find its way. Wales may feel the over bearing weight of a much larger England if it is left alone by itself. The only reason England holds onto the other Nations now is security of borders and natural resources, but also mainly to keep face as the main undisputed power in the Western European islands.

Chris Petrie yes I believe Brexit will be the last push for NI and Scotland to seek independence. Both want to continue enjoying the trade and economic advantages of the EU and Brexit has made it untenable for NI because of its border with Irish Republic. There’s a chance that NI might prefer to unite with the Republic and reunify the island then to remain in UK/GB. Scotland also wants to remain in EU and thus Brexit brings the independence issue back with a better reason.

Yea, Brexit is a major factor in the further fracturing of the Union. However the EU itself is in trouble and not just because of Brexit, the EU started of as a trading block but has morphed into a political project of monetary centralisation with Germany and France weilding too much power and influence. I remember Brexit happening and a worker from the North of England getting slandered from the press for his so called thicko comment. This worker argued against the comments about UK GDP being damaged by Brexit, his reply was your GDP will be damaged it will not make a difference to me. Of course the press slandered him as GDP is the Gross Domestic Product of the country as a whole. But he was not wrong in a sense as most UK GDP is unevenly distributed and held by our corrupt and opaque financial sector. So what he is saying is his slice and 99% of the rest of the UK populous slice of GDP is pathetic. Uneven wealth distribution is one cause of Brexit which our bullshitting government managed to shove the blame for much of onto the EU, many of our own screw ups were blamed on the EU. Brexit was a two fingered salute to the effects of globalisation and the flight of capital from the country by the people, along with the crap bargaining power of wages due to the threat of relocating globalised cheaper labour elsewhere. Brexit was a symptom of many things, of course a large chunk of the UK electorate are simpletons full of racism and what not too. The UK will fracture due to ignorance and apathy from the centralised powers of London. Like I said the old Empire is dead, the new Empires are centralised global mega cities sucking in all Capital and wealth. This does not go well for any country in the World not just the UK, the USA could have states depart as could Australia and many other European countries. Also one main driver of Brexit was from certain powers in the UK financial sector, take good old peoples champion Nigel Farage (sarcasm), this little worm was acting on behalf of the very people helping capital take flight to off-shore tax havens. The EU was trying to plug up these loop holes that were causing the collossal losses in tax income for many states. The financial cossetting mega cities pushing to keep the loop holes open like the City of London are causing damage to their own outlayer districts that depended on them for leadership. These other districts and states will have no choice but to take their futures into there own hands, however they will be set against the very mega cities that used to control them and it will not be a level playing field. Scotland will suffer whether being in the UK or not.

I think the difficulty might be your own very limited ability to understand the complex political and economic reasons for why people from the wealthiest to the poorest voted to leave the EU. Interestingly, the group that voted the most as a % were middle aged men with A level or similar professional qualifications, so clearly bright but did not go to university. At the time they were in their teens, a much lower % of people went to university than do now. I think you need to look more closely at the statistics than just parrot mainstream media headlines from the BBC, Guardian and the Independent.
