TheCluelessComposer what is the purpose of midi. Ninety nine percent of people who watch those can’t read sheet music and are therefore not advanced enough to play it.
when i was 8 years old my dad told me if i could play this piece will buy me a classical grand piano .... 10 years later i found this piece again and i learned it in one day ... we just ordered the piano
@@doyouhaveanyregrets that was more for the ragtime pianists who would play like coked up parkinsons patients. "Ragtime should not be played fast", _not_ "Ragtime _should_ be played _slow_ "
Here in Brazil (I'm in Rio de Janeiro) we have a composer and pianist like Scott Joplin: Ernesto Nazareth. If you hear any ragtime made by Nazareth in fact you'll love and will appreciate this compositions!
My piano students love to play the simplified version of this song. When I want to motivate the younger kids I teach the version on Alfred Adult All in one book. We use this link when we want to listen. Thank you so much
Historical note: This type music was relegated to the saloon because its composers were black and not allowed to play in the big concert halls of the time. Rag Time music had a more respected following in Europe by the European composers than it had in America with its silly Jim Crow laws. History kind of repeated itself 50 years later when many blues artists went to Europe and found a huge following...that later became the British Invasion.
Tugra Ersözlü I’ve been taking piano lessons for almost a year now. I heard this piece a few months ago and fell in love with it. However, when I began practicing it a couple of weeks ago, I started to hate every note. I can hardly listen to it without screaming.
Inspiring! My ten year old is playing this piece in simplified version, thank you so much to show him one day he needs to accomplish this full version!
In '74 when I was 17 I saw "The Sting" with Paul Newman and Robert Redford in London. A great movie and I loved the music. When I got back to Copenhagen I went to the record shop to try find Scott Joplin's rags. They were a bit curious about my sudden interest in rag time music.
Damn it I wish I could still play this. I knew the whole song but didn’t practice for months afterwards and I ended up forgetting the whole thing. Practice the piano kids!
Natalia, I'm a piano teacher and I play this song. if you want to learn to play this and other songs, contact me on my email: pedro.professordepiano@gmail.com
Well done! Perfect tempo, nice clarity, without sacrificing the playfulness of this one. It reminds me of “The Easy Winners” - both are rare Joplin compositions of pure carefree joyousness without a hint of sadness or regret. I imagine Joplin wrote them during a happy uncomplicated time in his life, having found love, recognition, and a measure of wealth. But Joplin's nature was not given to endless sunshine. Your performance of this one is as good as I've heard. Much better than Rifkin's, which is idiosyncratically slow (however, I generally view Rifkin as the gold standard of Joplin players). Both you and Rifkin feel the need to accent the A♭ (bar 18) in the descending bassline at the end of the first strain. I don't like this at all. That note is so delicious in part because it is so far out of the key; it stands out on its own. If anything, it should be 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳emphasized.
I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but the king of ragtime didn’t enjoy a whole lot of carefree uncomplicated times in his life. As an African American living in the reconstruction era life was not easy, despite being a prolific musician. Despite record breaking sales he had continuous financial challenges and died relatively young of syphilis.
Nice playing Paul, I grew up in a family of piano players and I defected to the guitar as my instrument of choice. But to this day I love hearing good piano music and yours certainly is very very good. A joy to listen to and to play along with. Never learned this song on guitar but thanks to you I have an opportunity to now. Thanks for the inspiration! :)
Oh, man. I LOVE your dynamics throughout the piece. They're perfectly timed and have the perfect shifts in intensity. Whenever I'm good enough to tackle this piece, I'll use your interpretation as my go-to standard.
NomadicAssassin1 - it makes sense, it just wasn’t what was on screen so it was making me mad lol. on the sheet music in the description it’s how he’s playing though
Tuna Time - in the bottom hand, last note on the second measure at the time stamp in my comment, he plays Eb in an octave but something else shows on the music. it sounds normal but isn’t what’s shown lol
Mis ojos están clavados en tu asombrosa forma de tocar el piano. Es increíble y sé que continuarás con este estilo todos los días de tu vida. Gracias Michael. Dios te bendiga.
I think playing the piano should be fun. Do not believe in exams. Seem to restrict. Do believe in tequniqe taught beginning lessons. Took one hour twice weekly for six months. Leaned half pedal.
Now the curtain is going up The Entertainer is taking a bow Does a dance step and sings a song Even gets all the audience to sing along Yes he knows just what he must do Knows how to bring down the house when he's through Snappy patter and jokes, he knows what pleases the folks The Entertainer, the star of the show It was in vaudeville that he was on the bill With all the singers, dancers, acrobats, and clowns There was a dancing bear, even a dog act there And a comedian who never let 'em down But when he came on to do his favorite song He really wowed them in the cities and the towns They came from near and far To see the vaudeville star The Entertainer Now the curtain is going down On the Entertainer, the artist, the pro He was put on this Earth To bring us laughter and mirth The Entertainer, the star of the show
excellent thanks... I'm just picking up the music again after about 30 years - and was unfamiliar with the last 2 repeated sections... your exact and dynamic playing really shows off this piece well!
Kurtis Kroon yes Joplin did write "not fast". However I'm sure he didn't mean play at the speed of a 400 year old dying tortoise. IMO 1.25x this speed is the sweet spot and I occasionally play a bit faster than that.
I know this is a piano video, but Horkstow Grange (The Miser and His Man) from Lincolnshire Posy is my absolute favorite piece of music of all time. When I played it in band, I sometimes forgot to come in because I was distracted by the music’s beauty.
I keep looking for classic ragtime pieces I can practice on my 61-key Casio. There is literally one note in this piece that stops me from being able to do it. Ah well, on to the next video. Also, great job! :)
congrats Mr Barton I hope it’s okay to ask again to play Jimmy Johnson’s The Charleston transcribed from a piano roll, it’s freely available as a pdf. You play swing so well.
The best presentation I ve ever heard.......perfect tempo... everybody plays it too fast...how dare you employ Dynamics.. what??? Legato phrasing... We need to talk...keep em coming...thanks for the post
for those that might benefit from your studies, thank you. Study hard. don't stop listening to and looking upon art that is well done. Your assignment for today is to close your eyes and listen to music that gives you comfort.
Bozz Skaggs thanks! Actually I started to play the violin again! I used to play the violin as well in fine arts school! I have a concert on 24 may! Im proud of myself to do what I love! For both psychology and art!
Not criticising because I'm a beginner and you're clearly amazing and I love watching this! But it looks like you're playing the second chord in bar 22 wrong (and everywhere that melody line appears)? 🧐 There's an E in there, not an F
