Scottie Barnes Scouting Report | 2021 NBA Draft Breakdowns

Scottie Barnes is one of the most interesting players in this class. His combination of size, athleticism, defensive prowess and playmaking ability make him an appealing prospect. However, his inability to shoot or really score consistently on any part of the floor in the halfcourt currently limits him as a player, drastically.

I think there might be some trades in the pipelines. Kyle may retire a Raptor so Suggs would be pushed to the bench next to Flynn. Siakam might be on the move and Barnes can replace him. Barnes and OG tag team is deadly so both can switch to guard the 5 if needed.

I think the scary thing is that this guy legitimately could be an offensive superstar as well. He’s extremely capable and coordinated even if he doesn’t have the polish yet, his shot mechanics look really nice, and he’s even comfortable handling the ball and even passing in the pick and roll. I think there’s a superstar player in there somewhere Edit: welcome to Toronto!!!

I found this guy in a Warriors article said that this man can be the next Draymond Green but better and I was like who the heck is this dude now I want him on the team 😂 man looks like a solid 6 9 to 6 10 hope the Warriors snag this dude with the minnesota pick
@GoZags43
@GoZags43 3 года назад
I agree that he can be good offensively, but I can’t see superstar. He is a very good/willing passer for his size. He also has a good handle even if it can be a little out of control and rigid at times. I STRONGLY disagree on the shot mechanics looking nice though. His base is WAY too wide, his feet aren’t parallel, he doesn’t jump forward hardly at all, his feet land differently every time, his feet point way too much towards the basket (forces his right elbow to kick out and not aim towards the basket), and he doesn’t get much knee bend either. Up top his actual release and guide hand are ok getting decent rotation, but the feet pointing at the basket cause that right elbow kick out. He will need A LOT of tweaks to the jumpshot to even be passable. I think much of his problem is lack of confidence and reluctance to shoot, which causes the whole thing to be inconsistent and mechanical. He will need to rework his base completely and turn the shot into much more of one motion if he wants any chance of approaching league average. He has a lot of potential, but he is a player that needs to find the right situation and coaching to use his skill set properly.
@CK-wi8nw

@@GoZags43 I think this guy is literally the second coming of draymond green man I just see draymond in him in these highlights but i dont get to watch the games for me to say that hes legit
@proballa27
@proballa27 3 года назад
@@GoZags43 im not seeing the things you are talking about too often. up top the release is very clean. The base is wide and he does square up a bit too much but he's still able to shoot in rythmn pull ups like at around 8:51. At 19, especially with the way the NBA is now, im not concerned about his shot. He's going to get more NBA 3pt reps than his entire life combined in his first few years of practice alone. The reason i think the offensive potential is so high is that he's so athletic and comfortable with the ball in his hands. He's not uncordinated, he's just raw and doesn't know what he's doing half the time, he just goes off feel. It won't be right away, but i think eventually he might become a very good offensive player overall I think he's too athletic to be compared to Draymond, who's a good athlete but a completely different type. Maybe something Josh Smith is a more apt comparison. Smith in his prime was a 19-10-4-1.5-1.5 type of guy. With the current fast pace and emphasis on the 3pt shot Smith would have easily been a 20-25ppg scorer, and that's what I project Barnes ceiling to be around
@GoZags43
@GoZags43 3 года назад
@@CK-wi8nw I definitely respect that opinion, and I understand where some of it comes from. The ball handling/vision at his size (has a few inches on Draymond too) is pretty special and Draymond like. The difference is I think Draymond is MUCH more athletic moving laterally. Even when Draymond was fat, he was quick as hell laterally. Barnes is pretty filled out strength wise with rocked up legs, but he is pretty slow moving side to side. He can definitely get quicker, but I worry about his athleticism transferring to the league. It can definitely work though (think Kyle Anderson), and I think he should be a lottery pick for sure, but I don’t see him on the same level as Kuminga like some are saying.

Shot form looks similar to OG's, obviously less refined, so I'm convinced Raptors can develop it. He certainly has more downside than a guy like Suggs, but I think he's got a lot more upside given his rare skills for a guy his size. He's not an explosive athlete, but he has that fluidity in his movement for his size like Siakam. I think his upside is a stronger, better playmaking Siakam if the shot gets there. Siakam was an All-NBA player, so that's a really really good player. With the Raptors strong track record of developing guys, particularly long wings who couldn't shoot coming out of college, I think it was worth it.

His effectiveness cant be quantified based solely on his offensive shortcomings , simply because its so early in his basketball career. Ive been saying to ppl he reminds me of Giannis...3 years into his NBA career! Barnes is already a physically developed player. He will only get stronger and better with all his skill sets. Draymond is a low bar for him, he will be much better than Green. He’s already a better ball handler and defender than DG. When was the last time you saw Green press a point guard full court. I’d love to get this kid on my Knicks playing defense under Thib’s tutelage!

I genuinely think he could play the 5 for us. Imagine Pascal, OG, and Scottie - the defensive combination could honestly shut down any team. Every player surrounding him (VanVleet, GTJ, OG, and Pascal) are respectable shooters, and OG and Pascal are freak-like athletes. Scottie being the most natural playmaker of those 5 guys, I believe we could see him running point-center! Watch out for this Raps squad!

It’s gonna be tough if he’s a zero on offense. I see some promise with the passing but I feel like Draymond is a bit more of a playmaker. I hope he can develop a jumper, then he can become scary. But I remember watching a Florida State game and thinking it was shocking the guy was projected so high because he was invisible on the court. Although, I didn’t realize at the time that he was projected that high purely for his defense.
