No armor plaits no huge as thick shoulder armor, no huge bastard swords, No armored fucking Horses!, just a kilt and cloth yet we still managed to wreck the English back into next week, now that's a fucking true warrior.
the last time the Scottish fought against English knights was at the battle of Flodden, the Scottish were massacred and their king was killed. Also they would have been wearing plate armour anyway, this sort of attire wouldn't have been used against Knights.
***** The weapons however aren't 17th or 18th century (aside from the backsword). Conzo referred to knights so I did as well, I do know that this clothing isn't 16th century in anyway and is more akin to what was worn during the Jacobite rebellion, hence why I said "this sort of attire wouldn't have been used against knights". I probably could of mentioned the Battle of Solway moss as well where the same thing happened, but I don't think knights were used at that point.
Wm Wallace and many of the warriors who fought the English didn't dress this way. They were of "The Border" a place that knew no peace for over 1500 yrs, and they were horsemen.
You are a careful liar Head klansman McLeod Isle of Skye dunvegan Castle I'm first in line I'm in charge of all Clans I stand beside the Stewart family Reigns and rules Northern parts of Scotland irule West Point Scotland how are you lad And losses I'm just letting myself be known coming out of hiding will be on my land I just saw the color TV set thought I'd knock on your door stand with me
Fascinating information. Part of my family is Scottish lineage and since I adore Billy Connolly and those who speak like he does ... love the accent so much ... I am having a good time watching this video.
I am writing an article about Viking Age swords at the moment for my Masters- I think the inter-cultural exchange of technologies and artwork on weapons is indeed fascinating. Great video !
My Gradfather wore his kilt like that. I have only seen 3 others wear it like that. One was a sheep farmer when I was a boy. I never knew how my Grandad tied it. it was so efficient to wotk in and do the things he did. Thank you for this video. I never knew what the belted fabric was called. He wore one on occasions. I may have to get me wee lass to braid me one of those.
Good video. Interesting use of the kilt with the pleating and folding. I liked how you used the weapons as well as I didn't know much about the lochaber axe. Nasty weapon! The basket hilted sword with the targe and dirk was interesting to me as I wear those but was never shown how to use them. I wear them as part of a uniform in our pipe band. GOOD VIDEO! I'd give you an A+
Men look GREAT in kilts.....................Highlander. The scottish accent is sublime. That was a hell of a lot of fabric, but then I could see why, as they could wear them like a cloak. Who knew? But a great idea. Could have doubled as a blanket too. Great video, informative & interesting.
I love how your brother showed how to make a REAL kilt. It seems most cut the fabric lengthwise, then sew the pleats down. Their kilts look like something I'd find at Kohls. This seems more realistic and a lot easier. Thank your brother for sharing. :)
Today I was teaching my class of 5 children with autism about Scotland. I visited in 2005 with people to people student ambassadors as a teacher leader. As I was preping for my lesson I knew I wanted to show them Kilts because we had such a wonderful presenter while we were in Kenmore, Scotland and he made it so interesting. I was so surprised to find your video because your brother was the presenter I had! it made it all that much more special to share the video with my class!
That doesn't look too difficult. But then again, a warrior can't be taking forever to get dressed, so it makes sense. I'm glad there are people keeping draped clothing alive.
Hey Alan, I caught u an Jamie an the lads at the Alba West bike show in Drymen. I'm a born and bred Glaswegian and even I learned a load from ur demonstrations, keep up the good work and spread the knowledge................I am the son of the son of the son of the son ;-)
Always great to be back and how is everybody it's cold in Canada but I'm enjoying the snow and it's a great sport in the snow to see couples cuddling and a lot of years and a lot of other sports and how was my homelands Scotland that I miss so much I can't wait to return very soon now yours truly head clansmen McCloud
What a true son of Scotland, carrying on the traditions of fighting, the art that the scots excelled in, and the art that bought us our freedom, makes me even more proud to be Scottish
Thanks for showing how to properly pleat a full-plaid. I have a blackwatch tartan in my basement and I couldn't for the life of me figure-out how it was worn without just wrapping it into a toga.
@wedingo Not sure about width but traditional kilts are approx. 1 x 9 yards (hence the term, the whole nine yards). That one may be the 9 yard done as a great kilt (60in x 4 1/2 yards - note: also 9 yards total). The long length can be longer than 4 1/2 to accommodate larger waists.
The kilt was far more than I ever thought it was. As a reenactor myself I portray a hiberno Norse Viking and use a plaid and frilled cloak I'm thinking now that the cloaks might well of been much larger than we use ?.
That pole arm is similar to the Swiss and English halberd or as a matter of fact it looks like a combination of the Viking pole axe and the English bill hook the only difference being. That it has an actual meat hook near the tip ,but I must say it looks very different from similar weapons of the period thus it has its own Scottish style.
it evolved from original weapons then to Norse and Saxon designs. Because of influence of the Norse and later Saxon influence of the Island.....I find it very fascinating.....My Kilt of course is the short kilt Balck Stewart Tartan as my family Tartan is Stewart(Stuart) Royal
I've been wearing a great kilt every chance I get for the past several years, but I've never seen it worn that way before. I have to admit it looks a lot easier to carry than with the full sash.
Great video, thanks! I've always wondered what the greatkilts actually were, and how they were worn, so thanks for showing that. But at 4:19 you have one piece over a shoulder, how do you do that? Nice weapons too! I hadn't seen a Lochaber axe before.
This video was great- would love to see a more involved one (what they did & how they did it & why). What about the sgian dubh? How would someone draw & use that? I can't figure it out or find any answers.
Awesome! What is the Krish belt? An addittional belt to hold up the kilt? Are you going make a video on the scottish wrestling or unarmed combat used by the warriors of ancient Scotland? Will you be at the big homecoming in Holyrood in July?

wow, had no idea a traditional style kilt was so intricate to put on! very informative video thanks for putting it up, i have Scottish as well as Irish ancestors, seems like there wasn't much they did that wasn't really difficult. pardon me if i missed it, but was there a practical reason for making the pleats, or just for visual effect?
Fantastic demonstration. I really appreciate the historical info being presented by such a giant badass. I see that there is a big ol 2 handed type claymore amongst the weapons there. Do you have a video demonstrating the use of that? I have been searching for a while and there is very little info on it's proper use. Thanks!
@d00ft Thank you soooo much for the program. I think the best way to learn would be going back to Scotland and taking up my great great aunts offer of teaching me. Maybe I should get a foreign workers visa....
Hope things are going better for you health wise .Glad to have found this video again. I first found it a year ago or better on another (historical?) website. Do you happen to know where that site is? As I recall it had other good links on it. P.S The Clann An Drumma tune is great. Thanks for posting.
My ancestor Herbertus was the Camerarius Regis Scotaie (Chamberlain to King of Scots) under David the 1st. True story. He took the names De Camera and.....Camerarius, that went on to become Clan Cameron. Camerons are all a mix of lowland Scots and Normans.
Greetings Clansman Iron Head clansmen McCloud dunvegan Castle Isle of Skye I stand with the Stewart family side by side I'm in charge of all Clans I greet you I'm first in line I welcome you iReal West part of Scotland
Just bought a kilt from Edinburgh two days ago & came across this ! Totally different ! Surprised about your kilt (obviously mines got belts attached and things). Didnt know a sporran was for food but thinking about it... What was the small bag on your belt. Also what about the Sgian-dubh, that goes in your sock ? Did they have archers & crossbowers also ? Oh & what about Irish tartan ? Did irish warriors wear the same attire ?
I heard the kilt came later in the 1700s, before then the Scots just wore long shirts that went ot their knees, I could be wrong but it's interesting to see what uses the kilt did have in its traditional form.
this is a great video...im going to scotland this summer to learn more about my clans history..i keep finding that its really confusing...for example during the jacobite uprising the nobles in my clan supported the government...while the actual everyday clansmen supported the jacobites..i also have highlanders and lowlanders in my clan which is also extremely confusing lol..before the renaissance tho my clan was very patriotic and signed the declaration of arbroath so im very proud of that:D
The first belt you used for your belted plaid, the narrow one. What kind of belt is that? I have been looking everywhere for a belt like that but cannot find one.
@walzerfan1 ive just googled bavarian mountains for some pics looks pretty impressive ill have to check it out,ive heard of bavarian beer which seems pretty nice as far as i remember.i guess the kilt or plaid is folded over 1 shoulder and then tied in using a broach or can be,depends on the period aswell. nice to chat
thanks for providing me with ancestral and historical knowledge :) i dont know when i'd need to take up arms like that, but at least now i know how my people fought XD and good gods i'd love to do this for a living!
LORD BYRON:"the albanians struck me forcibly by their recemblance to the highlanders of scotland,in drees figure and manner of living.the kilt though white;the spare, active form, their dialect, celtic in sound and their habits, all carried me back to motven.no nation are so detested and dreaded by their neigbours as the albanese".
A question for you or your brother, would a 10 oz weight work for the style of kilt you're wearing, or should I get a tartan that's 16 oz? Also, what is the length/width of the fabric? Looks about 15 feet long by 5 feet wide. Any answers would be appreciate, hope you're doing well now
My Ancestors are from Krickbride Scotland in North West Scotland I still have my ggg grandfather's basket helt sword and his durk and small axe and I'm proud we fought the English they treated the Scottish like animals
whats that colored belt called? also in ur extended video u have the tartan over ur shoulder how do u get it like that....sorry fer all the questions but im interested in doin reenactments n stuff
do u need to wear 2 belts when puttin on the plaid...i noticed ur brother used a thinner belt when puttin on the plaid then one thick belt to keep it on tight is that necessary or just for looks?
whats the name that coloured belt your brother is wearing? if you could please find the exact name because im tryin to look up where i may be able to get one or find an example of one for someone to make me one...i do re enactments and i based alot of my garb off this video and i would like to get that belt..apparently its a sort of badge of honour
@tonsbergvikingen i use my kilt for a medieval festival all the time..but its like the one in the video..its a great kilt..u cant use a modern kilt with the sown pleats for a medieval festival:p
@d00ft Yes indeed Bother, I agree, Im from Nova Scotia (New Scotland) I am proud to be part of two clans into our Famly lines, not to mention Irish LMAO. @d00ft Great vids...thank you for sharing! Is your brother part of a historical group or does it do it on his own? I'd like to find out more about the clans and their wars/military heritage. Thanks again, best of luck with the degree and better health!
What's the name or use of the other small bag hanging off your belt not the Sporran The thing that looks like it has a gold ring above it the camera looks directly at it but you never said what was.
