Scottish Clans: The story behind Clan MacDonald 

I descend from Somerled mac Gillebride. My 30th great grandfather to be exact and his son Ragnall my 29th. I also descent from other clans as well.

My father is a direct male line from Sorley MacDonald (Donnell). He did the Y111 chromosome DNA test as well and confirmed the ancient origins. I am proud to be a direct decedent.

The McDonald clan and the McDougall clans are kin folks who came from two brothers of King Solmerland.

I am a descendant of the Clan MacDonald. My 4th Great Grandfather came from Scotland. Our last name changed the spelling from MacDonald to McDaniel the first 100 yrs.

My grandmother was a Macdonald from Glencoe . I was born in 58 Loanfern Ballachulish and grew up there

I descend from Somerled through the Maternal line (my great-great-grandmother was a MacDonald) and she wed my great-great-grandfather who was a McCance....I hit a blank wall thereafter on finding out how the McCance surname was associated with which clan.

My family are two clan MacDonald, One is CLAN RANALD AND THE 2ND ONE,IS MACDONALD OF ILSE. FROM MABOU CAPE BRETON.

Somerled beat the Crovan dynasty to take control of part of their lands. The Crovan's were Norse-Gaells, as was Somerled himself. The historian Alex Woolf believes the Clann Somhairle can be regarded as a female line cadet branch of the Crovan dynasty. I think that it was more of a dynastic struggle between two Norse-Gael warlords. To paint Somerled as a Gaelic hero defeating the alien Viking invaders is, I believe, a distortion of the facts. The Isles would remain under Norwegian rule for another hundred years after Somerled's death at the Battle of Renfrew, where he fought against the Kingdom of Scotland ,so it is difficult to see Somerled as a Scottish hero.

I decend from Flora McDonald of Glengarry born 1560 who married Murdo MacLeod of Gesto Isle of Skye. Flora was a decendant of Colin Campbell via her grandfather Mor Maclean. Colin's mother was a Stewart and decendant of Robert the Bruce.
