I hope you see this a year later, My father used to sing this song as one in his rotation in the car when we were kids. Still makes me cry. Such a good memory. If your father is still with us please thank him.
I idolized him when I was growing up, and that is, I believe, the source of my strong feelings about those who serve. I had no other military connection. So the package I'm getting ready to ship to Operation Gratitude this week is as much from your dad as it is from me.
I remember singing along with this song when I heard it on the radio. I was 5 years old. My cousin was about 15 and he would play it on the piano and we would sing at the top if our lungs. Thank you to every soldier that has served, is serving, and those who are considering service. We would not be free without you.
There was a Cheers episode when one of the characters was thinking about moving to Canada. Rather that try to talk him out of it, the "crew" sang the "Green Baret."
Glad to know I am not the only one who cries when I hear this song. I am 41 but my mom played this song all the time. It was on of her favorites. She would have been 66 this year.
I was 7 years old when that song first came out. I remember listening to it and just sobbing. At 7 years old I couldn't fathom the true meaning ; the sacrifice. There was no way I could understand what war was. I haven't heard this song in probably 45 or 50 years. I'm 63 and now I understand. I was about the same age, and had 4 cousins over in the Nam. Even then I hated that war, but not the men, and women who were in it. I went on to be a (peacetime) Vet 79-83
I have never been against our military, but they should not have ever been in Viet Nam. Actually we were only supposed to send personnel over there to train their military.
Barry Sadler lived about 60 miles away in Murfreesboro Tn. for a long time. He's actually the one singing this song too. He had a sad and very tragic life. He deserved better than what he went through. May he rest in peace. 😥
My dad was also a Green beret and so I was raised at Ft. Bragg North Carolina. I met a lot of these folks and they were, to the man, great people who loved their country.
My Uncle Clayton Jordan was a Green Berets,served two tours in Vietnam,was in the U.S. Army from 1950- 1980;30 years,2 months and 16 days,buried at Ft Bragg in 2014 at age 82,Cancer. RIP
This song always brings tears to my eyes. It reminds me of my Dad. He died when I was ten years old. He was in the Army a very proud Green Beret. He fought in the Korea war. I have so much respect for all military in America and our allies.

Spent 25 years of a 35 year career in the Special Forces. I can honestly say I trained, and trained with, fought, and traveled, partied and sang with some of the greatest men on this planet. Three weeks after I left Afghanistan and retired my son was killed by an IED. He too was Special Forces.
I first heard this song when the movie "Green Berets" first came out in 1968, with John Wayne starring in it. Viet Nam was still active. I had several friends in Viet Nam and had lost several to it. I still fall apart when I hear this song. I still see their faces, think of their families, and just ache because of all those that didn't come home. God Bless and protect ALL OUR MILITARY, OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT, BORDER PATROL, FIREFIGHTERS, AND FIRST RESPONDERS! They all run in to the danger while others run away! They have always been and will always be my HEROES and will have my respect and support for as long as I live!
My Uncle was a Green Beret. He is an amazing man that has taught me so much. He was a sniper with them and can still shoot a gun with amazing accuracy. He is not someone to mess with but he means the world to me and his family. So grateful for his and others’ service
Watch the John Wayne movie the "Green Berets" these men are the best of the best in the US Army Special forces. Watching the Vietnam era movie will give you a sample of their beginnings. They are committed warriors working with indigenous populations in small numbers, behind enemy lines, making a difference. God Bless them. My uncle was a Green Beret during Viet Nam and did 3 tours. He made it home and went on to become a warden of a prison in Huntsville Texas. He was an amazing man. When he walked thru the halls of the prison amongst the prisoners they would part and give him space. He earned the respect he was shown.
We learned and sang this song in choir class in elementary school in the mid-1960's and I am so happy to watch this and to be able to recall every single word. I was perhaps 8 or 9 years old, too young to fight, but I have maintained the respect singing this song developed in me for the Green Berets and all of those who serve in the military to this day. This song has always meant a great deal to me. I had the privilege to hear Barry Sadler sing this song in person once. I knew several men through my college friends who were Green Berets. They were very special people. I wish all people would show appreciation to these special men and their families. Sadler was an example for many. God bless our servicemen and women.
SSgt Sadler opened up a "can of worms". Those outside of the military did not know about the Army Green Berets until his song came out. Later, a book was written by Robin Moore. From this book, John Wayne made a movie by the same name. Great book. Good movie.

My son just retired from the U.S. Army this month after 23 years. For the last 10 years, he has been a Green Beret. I raised my very own hero. His father and I are grateful that he is safe and we will continue to be very proud of this wonderful man. I was 7 years old this song came out. My dad was overseas in Vietnam he sent us a reel-to-reel recorder and requested that I sing this song and the song Last Kiss on the reel-to-reel and send it to him. At 7 years old I don't know how good I could really sing that is what he asked for and that's what I did. When he came home he told me that him and his buddies listen to this song every night before they went to sleep.

My father was a former green beret, retired due to shrapnel injuries. he used to sing this to me holding me when I was a baby one of my first real memories of him. He has been gone 31 years and I still think about this song and it still makes me miss him.

I think I was 8 or 9 when I first heard it, IA Trang Valley had been a news item on Walter Cronkite's CBS evening news recently and the spectre of elevated conflict was concerning to every mom. This song made me tear up the first time I heard it and every time since. My brother was Marine recon in Nam and loved the Berets. God bless.

This song came out in the mid 60s near the height of the Vietnam war. Oddly, although there were protests through out the country over the war this song was a number one hit.
I heard this song when it was first performed by Sgt Barry Sadler on the Today show it brought tears to my eyes then and still does today. My Dad was in the Army during WWII, my older brother was in the Air Force and served 3 tours in Vietnam and my younger brother was a Marine. My heart goes out always to all the brave men and women serving in the military they don't get the respect they so deserve. Thanks for playing this.

These are NOT air corp, or aviators. They are AIRBORNE operators. These are the guys they drop from the air by either parachute or repelling lines into the hot zones of war. They are tested to levels of endurance that very few can endure. They are taught survival techniques for almost any type of condition, and even to eat what would make most people puke in order to survive. When the job description call for extreme danger, slim chance of survival, overwhelming odds, and the most hostile environment, these are the guys they send in. They will through shear force of will and training stop at nothing to obtain their goal. They are normally very reserved around those other than their own as they have nothing to prove to ANYONE, they know they are the REAL THING! The likes of these people has not been seen on this earth since the days of SPARTA! These are the guys who train other nations on how war is done properly
As a child I lived in Japan and Okinawa during the height of the war. They would bring them to Okinawa for jungle jump training. When we arrived on Okinawa we could watch our men from the rooftop of our hotel. Plane after plane would fly overhead the skies filled with parachutes. It looked like blowing those fluffy white dandelions by the handful. My cousin came to Okinawa on his way to Viet Nam. Mom fixed dinner for about eight of his buddies. Good homemade Mexican food. Perhaps the last home cooked meal some of these men had. I remember one standing and raising his beer saying “ here’s to my brothers that we all come home!” ! I was only 8 years old but remember that evening vividly. We would watch the news everyday. AFN would scroll the KIA, Wounded in action and MIA. The numbers would bring tears to my eyes wondering if my cousin was one of them. Fortunately my dad was an electrician and worked on the flight simulators of the F105 and F4 and was safe from the war zone. He served his twenty and retired as the war slowing down. I followed in his tracks not as an electrician but as a medic. I am technically VN era because I signed before the war was officially over. I too served for twenty years. Decorated by President Reagan for a “Lifesaving”.
Listened to this song as a young boy in the early 70’s and knew I would serve in the military. In 82’ right out of high school I went active duty. Spent 14 years as a USAF Paramedic.
It gives you something to be proud of but also heartfelt at the end of the Ballot. Part of it you feel the sorrow of the Widow but at the same time the honor and tradition of that unit.
My Grandma Ethel, who was born and reared in Bristol, England and became a naturalized American, loved this song. She cleaned the operation rooms during WWI. Grandma had us request this song on a local radio station. We did, and she waited hours to hear it. She was quite a patriotic American.
The line of the song, "He has died for those oppressed" is significant. The flash on the Green Beret cover features the motto of the Special Forces which is "De Oppresso Liber". Loosely translated, the phrase means "to liberate the oppressed".
Driving down a street at Ft. Irwin, NTC, California I told my daughter to look to her left as she would probably never see the sight coming toward her. 6 Green Berets dressed to the nines! She waved and each one waved back. She was so thrilled. I loved working there!
I remember watching the movie the Green Berets and both me and my father cried at the end of the movie and my dad's generation was raised never to cry. That's how strong this song is. When this song came out during the Viet Nam conflict, radio stations that played were often blacklisted by anti-war types. It was quite controversial and stirred a lot of anger among those who opposed our involvement in Viet Nam.
...And to those who didn't and who still don't approve of the brave service people who served and the ones who died doing what they were told to do, I can only say: "How sad". "Where is your heart and soul?"

Oddly enough this song was writen To honor a green baret from my home town. His son was a class mate of might. He was given an appointment to west point on the death of his father. It was a long time ago. His son was around 10 years old when his father died. His son died of covid early this year.
