I agree 100% with Davy's interpretation of the Gaza amendment fiasco in Westminster. No-one in England wants to say it but it had to be the British Establishment muscling in over parliament to short circuit an "unthinkable" scenario. Starmer was the "trusted" vehicle by which it was achieved and it's naive to think he was acting primarily for Labour.
@drakedouay1286
@drakedouay1286 6 месяцев назад
The way I see it, the SNP was very cynically trying to amplify Labour's internal split because the SNP's lead over Scottish Labour is slipping away. And I say that as a regular SNP voter. The SNPs wording was deliberately chosen because they new that Labour could not easily agree with the wording, a wording that wasn't actually justifiable for the House of Commons as it went beyond the remit of the House.
@Glasgow_kiss
@Glasgow_kiss 6 месяцев назад
@@drakedouay1286 not true as the uk parliament has made statements on collective punishment without international court judgements before. most notably in kosovo and south africa, but you could include ukraine and many other conflicts. this was a face saving exercise from starmer, nothing more.

I didn't feel I had enough time, given the topics of conversation to get my notes out but I wanted to clarify with some figures outlining Scotland's contribution to Westminster's coffers, after comparison was made between England & Ireland's figures; From 1861-1891 Scotland was: Overtaxed by £92,684,319 Underfunded by £39,000,000 Which gives an Aggregate Loss of £131,684,319 - or £13,768,988,187.44 in today's money as per the BoE's Inflation Calculator. These figures were ascertained by purely pro-union Scotsmen including lawyers of the day.

As a Geordie in Newcastle I have mixed feelings about Scot independence. I understand the urge to get away from the southern English Westminster culture , but I fear England just becoming a constant Right Wing horror show without Scotland. Never mind the practical issues of border control and all that, I don't want to be left in a shrinking state dominated by the worst that the county of Kent and its tyoe produces, that Farage /Widdecombe style crazy Tory. Us in the North East are way closer to Scots than Brits down south, please don't leave us to their machinations?!

I agree, as someone from Yorkshire I have nothing in common with London, not even a language! Good luck to Scotland because we are going to have to sort ourselves out. As we see, the Scots have no power to prevent the Tory right staying in power and ruining the UK.

Understandable but its worth remembering there have only ever been 3 occassions in the last 320 years where scottish seats have had a meaningful impact on the outcome of a GE. In the long run I think England will be better off as it will be forced to face its issues.

On the day of the shenanigans, Lisa Nandy said exactly why they had a problem with the wording of the SNP motion. This was also really clearly explained by Phil on A Different Bias and on Labour Social. I love this channel and watch every week. Disappointed at the lack of accuracy.

Paddy... all Phil does is repeat that the SNP are shite....so if they are shite ...why do the Scottish people consistently reject both main Westminster parties 🤷....who do you honestly think is right.... Phil....or the majority of the Scottish nation 🤷 I would suggest you take your head out of your arse and do some research yourself.....but I suppose if Phil can't be bothered....why should you 🤷

Same here. The SNP included a part of their bill that they KNEW a lot of Labour MPs couldn't vote for. It was disgusting behaviour. If they cared about children in Gaza more than their political ambitions they wouldn't have deliberately included a clause they knew some Labour people wouldn't vote for. They saw an opportunity to split Labour and decided that was more imoortant than anything else. They weren't outraged because their bill wasn't voted on. They were outraged because their plan to split Labour failed.
@POWERtothePEOPLE-GP78

I've never heard Phil say the SNP are shite and I've been watching him for over two years. Like myself, he likes the SNP and understands why people in Scotland vote for them. If the SNP wanted to pass their bill all they had to do was not include the wording they KNEW half of Labour couldn't vote for. They caused the problem by trying to use it as an excuse to split labour. They made it look like they cared more about dividing labour than Gaza.@@acciesmad6237

@POWERtothePEOPLE-GP78 6 месяцев назад
@@britnatzaredemocracydenier5922 Yeah they have 3 motions - and they decided to use one of them to try and divide Labour. That doesn't suggest they care very much about Gaza. ALL labour MPs would have voted for their motion if they had just not put that one line in it. They didn't have to do that - they did it deliberately to divide Labour. And don't say 'Liebour' - it just makes you look silly and incapable of proper debate.

Phil? Seriously? Labour had plenty of chances to bring forward their own motion but didn't. And the eventual Labour motion that passed left out collective punishment and also gave Israel wriggle room.

Please do not tell the English voters what they think! The SNP motion was cynical and naive. The lady speaker makes some fair points, but sorry the situation is complex, and retribution is not the solution. Words do matter, like genocide, colonialism etc. Don't be part of the problem.

How can you tell the English to stop voting for crooks cons and loonies . Voting for your own demise takes some amount of intelligence . They don't even realise they are thatchers minions . She let them buy their council house so they think they are gentry and need to vote Tory . What they don't realise is they own their house but most don't own the land it is on the real gentry do.

Considering the whole situation of the SNP’s opposition day been hijacked last week was caused by English Parties ridding rough shaw over the Scottish party that represents the vast majority of constituencies in Scotland and representing a political view of the majority of Scot’s regardless of party have on Gaza was done to save a English MP from embarrassment and that went against the political views of both the major English parties. See when English people stop not only telling Scottish Voters what they think but also stopping using a one sided system to interfere and burry the democratic will of the Scottish people then we will be happy to leave little England to its own political mess.And the only thing that was Naive about last weeks Labour amendment was if you believe Labour meant it. Cause it’s kind of funny how Labour’s went very quiet on Gaza since there suddenly change of heart on a ceasefire last week.Stamer seems more interested in what goes on at crackpot conventions in the States than stopping a Genocide this week
