Scottsdale is part of the greater Phoenix Metropolitan area in Arizona. Before European settlers came to claim land, two Native American tribes, Hohokam and Patayan, co-existed in the area.
Hohokam and Patayan are archaeological terms used to describe their culture. Hohokam represents a culture that lived across central and southern Arizona, with O'odham tribe ancestors. The Patayan represent the culture that lived on the western side of Arizona, leading into California and parts of northern Mexico. Their ancestors are the Yuman tribes.
When Spanish explorers first saw the Arizona landscape in the 1690s, they noticed the tribes abandoned some of their ways of living, such as their large adobe structures, and transitioning into more simple ways of living. Populations even declined a bit. Scientists think that the tribes transitioned into less material goods because it was more sustainable for a harsh desert environment.
Centuries later, Winfield Scott set his gaze upon the Salt River Valley in 1888 and bought 640 acres. He then recruited people to come live and create a community in what is now known as Scottsdale, AZ. By 1947, the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce was formed, theming the town based on Western style roots from the midwest and east of the United States.
Scottsdale now lives by the phrase, "West's Most Western Town." Camelback Road is a long stretched main road that spans from the Maricopa Indian Community, Scottsdale, & Phoenix.
You will see street art, upscale home communities, shopping, and skyscrapers along Camelback Road. Check out our e-bike tour of Old Town Scottsdale if you want to see it in its modern day glory! Link below.
