I want to make it clear that I have no hard feelings towards Scotty. With this video I just wanted to point out some inconsistencies from the videos I've shown in a comedic way as well as show that BMW's aren't as complex or expensive as he usually says.
@nyioves
@nyioves Год назад
Oh OK. They are not as complex ? I have been to 4 different shops , two i have used for years who were like "take it the dealer" or recommended an indy shop. Even indy shop wanted 4,000 to fix an oil pan gasket. I guess then there is the dealer who I actually found satisfactory albeit expensive. He is pretty much spot on unless you want to become a DIY BMW mechanic because you love the car so much. Not everyone has a garage at their disposal to do that or the time.

Hes making points for everyday people looking to buy a car. Stuff like the plastic in the engine is a huge engineering flaw that is basically planned obsolesce in high sticker price. The point you made about removing the beauty cover can help, but outside of people into performance cars, very few buyers of new BMWs are going to even want to touch the engine, let alone take off a part and keep it off. Your points that hes a "fucking idiot" for mentioning that things like the plastic pieces, unrelated to his current job, can break easily during repairs. The plastic, as you mentioned, is not necessarily consequential, but if it breaks off and that piece gets stuck in the engine somewhere, especially if you don't realize, it is going to melt and screw shit in the engine. The "Supra uses a BMW engine lol" is not even a real point; Toyota doesn't make sports cars anymore and hasn't for nearly two decades, even the 86 is really a Subaru. Scotty himself has said multiple times that the new Supra is not a real Toyota. Lastly, on your point about tech, hes exaggerating when he says shit like the convertible top is rocket technology, but what he's trying to say is cars last longer and cost less to fix when mechanisms are simple and non-electronic. Not everything on a BMW has to be fixed by a dealer, but the electronics systems often have to be. It again makes you feel like you are getting a high sticker product with planned obsolesce; why implement an electronic convertible top that you know is going to shit itself within 5-10 years (keep in mind, warranties last like 4 years if you drive 15k/year) if there already exists a cheaper, simpler alternative that can be easily fixed by the consumer? Even if Scotty is going overboard on his criticism, the point about these cars being unreliable comparatively to other brands, like Toyota, is evident in depreciation and the prices of used cars from these brands; it's not like Scotty has a price cartel on used cars.

Drove a BMW off the line in Germany during 1992. It was an epic ride. Scotty is right about the newer ones. Sorry to say. There are car guys and fanboys. Some people buy a BMW for status and to flex. Others are smart enough to do the research and have the means to buy one under warranty. It is a mistake to buy one used with multiple owners. Listen to mechanics. Many of the older ones are only trying to help.

I guess BMW guys are like Tesla guys. The manufacturer can do no wrong and if you say anything bad about their preferred brand, they get butt hurt lol. There’s no such thing as a perfect car but the reason I have money in the bank because I’m a smart business person and I believe in actual success over perceived status. You are correct though, a lot of Toyota people do drive older cars. Example, my 2010 Toyota sequoia fully loaded has 380,000 miles on it and has only had the alternator replaced (other than things like battery, brakes, tires and normal maintenance etc.) That’s good enough for me and I’ll laugh all the way to the bank on that one. It’s a beautiful truck and I’ll keep driving it. By the way, I had it at my shop (I have a dynamometer in my speed shop) and it tested very close to its original 381 horsepower from it’s 5.7 L V8 and is still as smooth as the day I bought it. Everything works right down to the windshield washer. Good luck with that on a German car I’ve had BMWs but I was smart enough to lease them and not purchase them. I would never own a BMW outside of warranty. The 380,000 miles Sequoia, I would put my wife and children in that car because I know it’s gonna work every time and it still looks gorgeous and it’s such an amazing truck/suv. The few BMWs that I have leased were beautiful amazing machines. I would just never own one that has more than about 40 or 50,000 miles on it lol. My doctor friend who is also a pilot has more money than I ever will loves his range rovers, BMWs etc. He feels the same way I do. Especially with his newest seven series that has been nothing but a complete piece of crap from day one. One of the stupid HVAC actuators broke so the A/C would only blow air out of the defroster and not out of the vents. If it wouldn’t have been under warranty it would’ve cost him over $5000 to replace a blend door actuator why? Because again they’re made out of crappy plastic. Just my ( and his) experience with BMW

The high pressure fuel pump took a shit, the ac compressor, the cheap plastic kept cracking and had to be replaced, one of the turbo waste gate was bad. I had electrical issues that came and went. I sold it bc I was tired of it I bought a Camry for daily driving that was a 2002 with 200k miles and still driving it now with 250k with 0 issues. And bought a 2017Camaro ss that never gave me an issue with 70k on it not a single problem I been driving it for 5 years and drove it 50k miles. I know the bmw is older but jeez man 60k miles and less then 2 years I spend 7-8k fixing bs problems that never ended. Too much plastic is used especially for a car that’s from that era, everything was made from plastic other then the block it self shit is sad.

Nor is a headlight even a good example of the cost of owning one of these. In my experience with 5 BMWs I've owned over the last 5 years, a headlight has never just "went out". But hey you know better I guess. I can tell by how you said you heard all this from someone else and you've never owned one. (just like I said in the video)

I agree with Scotty Kilmer 100% BMWs are overpriced and overrated junk just like all German cars are, like my sister's Audi Q5 has over 80,000 miles on it and its starting to fall apart mate.
@maxlarock8788
@maxlarock8788 7 месяцев назад
It’s true how he can spread false info about German cars in general even though he’s never had ownership experience with them. What he says about most German vehicles isn’t true, as for Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes, etc. And I actually have an Audi, BMW and Mercedes and VW sitting in my driveway right now. The BMW has given me a shitload of issues in less than 2 years. It’s problem after problem. Fix one thing, another breaks in a couple weeks driving it as gentle as can be. The Audi, Benz and VW have never given me issues near to what the BMW has and if they do it’s an extremely easier time fixing it. Maybe this is just by chance, but that’s what I have to say about my ownership of a BMW. But I gotta say they are fun cars when they work. I’m just trying to sell my BMW now, I’m too scared to drive it so I just leave it parked on the side of the house until some godsend decides to buy it. I’m sticking with the Audi, Benz, Volkswagen, never again a BMW.

At 120,000 miles my wifes poodle BMW had to have a replacement fuse box ,the one behind the glove box and simultaneously the door open/close remote aerial located inside the rear hatch spoiler which is prone to rain water contamination- ( stupid design) Never known such endless expensive defects. I did ,however, do a DIY driveway spark plug replacement and agree with you about Mr Kilmer. - It was a lot easier than he implied. I used a bungee hooked around the ignition coil handles and pulled very hard- only one broke but when put back into the spark plug hole it worked fine.

Yeah they aren’t bad because if they were bad she wouldn’t wanna buy another one smh I’m personally more of a Lexus guy (just prefer their designs, don’t really care too much about going fast don’t hate on me) But I won’t hate on bmw Or Mercedes Or any brand Even Tesla I understand that just because I’m not the target customer of a product but I also understand that it doesn’t mean they’re had

look I get that you're young and BMWs are fun cars. But Scotty isnt the only one that trashes BMWs, take a look at Hoovie and Car Wizard too. And they're right. Im European, BMW's are everywhere but we KNOW they're money pits. Great car for the 1st owner then it starts having stupid issues that other brands would never allow. Like 2005 to 2015 N20/47 has skinny rear engine timing chains that fail after 100.000km and you have to take the engine out. 10 YEARS thats on purpose. It still happens on newer B engines but BMW says its solved. PLASTIC CHAIN GUIDES that fall into the engine. xDrive transfer case has a PLASTIC actuator gear. Seals degrade in just 5y. They dont care. But we buy them anyway because they're cheap used. Mercedes is a MUCH better brand, they overengineer stuff but they fix it on later models
@E4Sierra
@E4Sierra Год назад
That's the core issue with this video (based on my objective at least) - it doesn't effectively make a case supporting BMW because it's only Kilmer who it discredits, yet there's so many other car owners and mechanics asserting the detriments...constantly.

There is tons of info on RU-vid and yes these vehicles require maintenance but what vehicle doesn’t require maintenance. I am a mechanic by trade not aBMW mechanic but in all honesty my Z4 doesn’t require any more maintenance than any othe modern vehicle. And as far as plastic use on the beemers I’ve found that all modern manufacturers widely use plastic under the hood on major components up to and including intake manifolds. I love my Beemer.

Bmw is a luxury car so you should expect to pay luxury car prices in repairs and dealerships don't make money from the sale of a car it's mostly from repeat service and luxury Japanese cars are just as expensive to repair and don't think LEXUS and ACURA don't have their share of problems, they don't do recalls they just extend the warranty on defective parts

I have been wanting to expand my knowledge of cars and car maintenance. I’m basically starting with no background knowledge truthfully. Scotty Kilmer was the first car guy I found on RU-vid. I did, and still do find him informative and entertaining, but I might have clung on to what he says too tightly. I saw BMWs as “over priced money pits”, but videos like yours are nice because it shows the other side of the story. From what I’ve heard, it sounds like BMWs are enjoyed most by hands on, “active maintenance” people who know everything (or at least a lot) about their cars inside and out. Being that kind of person is where I hope to end up one day. I like your videos a lot, I’ll be looking forward to more Bimmer vids!
