At the 2003 Ponderosa Stomp rehearsal, I asked Scotty Moore if he would mind playing through my Ray Butts Echosonic amp. He obliged me, played a few licks (including a tutorial on the right way to play "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone!") and talked about his own Echosonic amp, Ray Butts, and his powered extension cabinets he used in the 1950's. For anybody that's wondering, the grey amp next to the Fender is my Echosonic amp chassis in a Rickenbacker grey tolex cabinet--this is the cabinet the amp came with before I had a reproduction Echosonic cabinet made (the one seen in the Cairo, Illinois video). So--same original Echosonic amp--different cabinet than the other video. Thanks for your patience, Scotty--you're a true gentleman.

i don't care how many greatest guitarists of all time lists he's been on, he is underrated. i've never heard anyone talking about him in person, but i'm sitting here listening to the sun sessions on headphones going, i can spend hours listening only to scotty's guitar.

One of the most interesting guitar players, one of if not my favourite, love Scotty Moore, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Chuck Berry, Hank Garland, Duane Eddy, Hank Marvin, so many.

Yep, a slapback echo with a pretty long delay will get you close...but only Scotty can make it sound like this!

Does anyone know if any modern day boutique amp builders are building any reproduction/clone versions of this ultra rare Ray Butts Echo-sonic amp? I really want one, so bad ass! They obviously had amps with Reverb and Tremolo in the 50's,but to have actual tape echo like an echoplex type of device built into the amp is crazy!

He seemed like such a cool cat...and yet so humble and down to earth when talking shop...you are so lucky to have met a living legend...without Scotty, Elvis would have been/sounded so different...

Scotty is really the main reason to listen to Elvis. In 1954-1956 Scotty was taking attention off of Elvis so they made him to pop songs 1957-1967 then they went back to rock

Makes it look so easy, doesn't he? Scotty was THE guitarist when I was a kid in the late 50's - and even though I have heard hundreds - maybe thousands - of other guitarists over the last half century (can't believe I said that!) he still rates as one of the most influential and distinctive musicians of all time. Had it not been for his weapon's grade riffs I doubt we would have heard of the guy who sang in his band... Elvis something-or-other.

Me and my grandpa besides building my homemade electric guitar when I was 11 we also recently bought a hundred-dollar monoprice tube amplifier we took everything apart we did everything and built a tape loop machine in there All I needed was a third output transformer really it wasn't that hard to do that is my main amplifier I use now in the tubes I have in it are vintage 12AU7 tubes I play country rockabilly and bluegrass howdy from North Carolina I'm 21 now I use Thomastik flatwound strings 11 Guage except I swap the 11 gauge strings out for 9 Guage strings we added a second switch to for the tape loop machine and a 3 knobs so it's got volume tone volume for the tape loop echo level and the speaker is a 8 inch 100 watt speaker

@chooseyourblues yes use a clean amp, put reverb on it as well as a bit of slap. But the most important is to use your neck pickup and roll back on the tone to get a warmer sound.

Of course the Sun Album Sound and Chet Atkins was a contributing influence I think.

Is there any amp out there they make today that sounds similar to that? You obviously can't get an original, only 60 made and no one is selling but how about something that sounds similar? Best sounding amp I heard. Great amp. Scotty Moore's guitar is nice too, I hear those are single coil pickups in humbucker housings. Not sure what strings he uses.

It is true about Luther owning and using one, he got the 2nd one. Luther ordered one in 1956, but didn't receive it until 1957. He then used that until it got ruined in a rain storm in Jan 1958
@tatertot6603
@tatertot6603 6 лет назад
Luther actually had the 10th Echosonic made. He purchased it through Harold Bruckner for $395.00 and took delivery of the amp in January 1957. Mr. Butts was kind enough to mail me copies of the original order sheets and contact cards which I shared with Deke a few years back.
