Insane. "Stops people from loaning money to themselves that otherwise would and make it less likely for people to run for office" That would the point not to allow a wealthy person to literally buy their way into office. God help this country.

This is more about skimming funds from the campaign... think interest rates. Funds which are put there by donators who know you are skimming, because your doing it openly via a loan. Sometimes the system makes Bribery illegal, but nothing illegal on taking interest rate payments.

How about making illegal for anyone or their emmediate family members to financially invest in stocks of companies or industries where they are making policy and law decisions?? These politicians and their family's that have Backstage insight into future policy and law, should be exempt from investing in these markets all together. It's called insider trader... in sports Pete Rose was punished for betting on baseball.

@FRANKSNAKE71 how am I “completely wrong?” When you just stated what I just explained in detail twice what the difference was. Apples and oranges. What you and I stated is fact. Implying that it’s a direct parallel is ludicrous. The “government” had no control over how MLB handled the ethics charge against Rose!

@TLUE - Law of Attaction Adventures you are just making stuff up to fit your own feelings. I acknowledged the league took disciplinary action against Rose, but that was within the ethics rules of the game, not criminal violations. It’s not “illegal” to bet on games you are involved in. It’s “illegal” to “fix” games you are involved in! Betting on games gives a person a clear conflict of interest and a public perception that the game can not be trusted. And not only did Rose deny ever betting on any games he ever was personally involved in, but they never formally accused him of it or provided any proof to that extent!

Loaning your campaign money till the donations come in doesn’t seem like it should be illegal. It’s what you spend it on and if you’re influenced by donors that’s the issue. Our whole government is based on money raised which will always come with strings.

Wonder what the rates on a loan to a campaign actually are.... Got a bit curious and it seems they are in the double Digits! Rep. Grace F. Napolitano loaned her campaign $150,000 at 18%, lowered later to 10. When she was investigated the FEC found it to be a “commercially reasonable rate” and thus no violation of law occurred here. Since 2001, this one loan has earned her more then $150,000 and the principal of the loan is still around $100,000 to still be paid off. This is just a single news paper account of a single politician doing this... skimming from her political campaigns! And now the cap has been lifted, how much will she loan herself next I wonder?!

I just can't understand why this is a bad thing and I don't even support the guy... Like let's say he donates 1 million to his campaign and a big company donates 1 million as well. He has 2 millions for his campaign. If he spend 1.5 million for his campaign then he gets $500k back because he didn't have enough left over. If he gets more money donated later on then he gets the rest back. At the end of the day he still has the same amounts of money as he did when he started. How could that be interpreted as a bribe? Can anyone explain?
Jinx Dragon

Always keep in mind the dirty, dirty, things you can do with Loans. No one should be able to turn a profit by owing money to people, but... there are many ways. This judge just opened yet another loopholes to exploit, making those tricks you can do with loans all the more easier for politicians to pull off. Just so you know: Most of these loan exploits need a secondary 'money like system' to work, one with real value such as stocks. Now I can see at least one way for a Politician to use the most popular of these loan exploits, just... with refundable donations instead of stocks as the collateral. In short, by manipulating the rates of the loans they can get everything back, and then a sizable chunk extra on top of it... Yes, you can profit by just taking out a loan... if you have the right collateral. That... is pretty nasty when I think about it: Loan your Campaign money, at high interest and knowing it will be paid off soon as the donations come in. Then use that Loan as even more Collateral to further promote other financial interests, seeing it is a pretty solid loan. It is all political too, so there has to be tax exceptions already built in so you wouldn't need the usual third step to avoid taxes... they could make money three ways with this ruling!
Alberto Palma

You're putting here something hypothetical. "If" he donates to "his" campaign... He can have his own money back, but the thing here is about money from donors and the 250K cap is lifted. "His donors know he will be very grateful..." 1st: is he going to donate to his own campaign? I don't think so. Donors will be knocking on his door and he will be grateful.
John Anders
John Anders Month ago
Your missing a few parts here. This was a loan with a set range of interest, cap, and a two year time limit to pay back. Now there is no cap on amount, interest, or time. The idea behind it was the there should be a limit on the amount of money a candidate can make off donations.

Cruz's data-driven 2016 campaign relied on Cambridge Analytica for over $5.8 million in services, according to Federal Election Commission records, before the firm went on to work for the Republican Party's nominee, now President Donald Trump. The campaign hired Cambridge Analytica as a vendor to assist with data analysis and online advertising,” Frazier said in the statement. "The campaign’s data analysis program followed and built upon the successful data-modeling and micro-targeting approach pioneered by the Obama campaigns in 2008 and 2012. The company, Cambridge Analytica, has sent staff to Cruz’s campaign headquarters in Houston to help set up an intensive data analysis operation. Cambridge Analytica is connected to a British firm called SCL Group, which provides governments, political groups and companies around the world with services ranging from military disinformation campaigns to social media branding and voter targeting. So far, SCL’s political work has been mostly in the developing world - where it has boasted of its ability to help foment coups. Cambridge Analytica entered the competitive U.S. political data market only last year. Cambridge Analytica is owned at least in part by the family of the press-shy New York hedge fund manager Robert Mercer.(article,2017)

(41-19l} And (make mention of) the day when the enemies of Allah are gathered unto the Fire, they are driven on [41:20] Till, when they reach it, their ears and their eyes and their skins testify against them as to what they used to do. [41:21] And they say unto their skins: Why testify ye against us ? They say: Allah hath given us speech Who giveth speech to all things, and Who created you at the first, and unto Whom ye are returned. [41:22] Ye did not hide yourselves lest your ears and your eyes and your skins should testify against you, but ye deemed that Allah knew not much of what ye did. [41:23] That, your thought which ye did think about your Lord, hath ruined you; and ye find yourselves (this day) among the lost. [41:24] And though they are resigned, yet the Fire is still their home; and if they ask for favour, yet they are not of those unto whom favour can be shown. [41:25] And We assigned them comrades (in the world), who made their present and their past fairseeming unto them. And the Word concerning nations of the jinn and humankind who passed away before them hath effect for them. Lo! they were ever losers. [41:26] Those who disbelieve say: Heed not this Qur’an, and drown the hearing of it; haply ye may conquer. [41:27] But verily We shall cause those who disbelieve to taste an awful doom, and verily We shall requite them the worst of what they used to do. [41:28] That is the reward of Allah’s enemies: the Fire. Therein is their immortal home, payment forasmuch as they denied Our revelations. [41:29] And those who disbelieve will say: Our Lord! Show us those who beguiled us of the jinn and humankind. We will place them underneath our feet that they may be among the nethermost. [41:30] Lo! those who say: Our Lord is Allah, and afterward are upright, the angels descend upon them, saying: Fear not nor grieve, but hear good tidings of the paradise which ye are promised. [41:31] We are your protecting friends in the life of the world and in the Hereafter. There ye will have (all) that your souls desire, and there ye will have (all) for which ye pray. [41:32] A gift of welcome from One Forgiving, Merciful. [41:33] And who is better in speech than him who prayeth unto his Lord and doeth right, and saith: Lo! I am of those who are muslims (surrender unto Him). [41:34] The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better, then lo! he, between whom and thee there was enmity (will become) as though he was a bosom friend. [41:35] But none is granted it save those who are steadfast, and none is granted it save the owner of great happiness. ،

@Ned Frankly , Loans have little things like interest rates, some of these campaign loans are close to 20 percent! While being paid back so slowly they double or even triple in value before the campaign starts to pay down the principle. They are also 100% legal, so there is no reason to keep this knowledge to yourself if you want people to know that your own Campaign owes you money. Thus anyone looking to influence a corrupted politician could very use this mechanism for 'cleaning' the money. That is why it was capped, to make it unprofitable to the politician. For if a Donor wanted to bribe me indirectly, ensuring the Campaign that owes me money can pay me back....
Alberto Palma
Alberto Palma Month ago
@Ned Frankly Not stupid. Repaying yourself with money donated for a political campaign will go to the candidate's pockets, why? That money should and must be used for campaign purposes. Campaigns cost money: transportation, food for volunteers, hotels, printed material, etc. not to have a candidate as a beneficiary.
Ned Frankly

If I donated 10 million dollars to my campaign, at an interest rate of 10%, I would have only been reimbursed 250 Thousand once that loan came due. Now I can get the whole 11 million dollars back at the end of the campaign, as long as the campaign has 1 million in other peoples money to give me and hasn't spent a cent of my 10 million. If the campaign doesn't have the money to pay back, then I lose on this deal... but look at the money these campaigns bring in! Oh, and they can pay me back at any time... say when they get 11 million in donations half way through said campaign. Now I am not a lawyer, and I haven't dug into this deeply tonight, but the question I keep asking is: What is the Interest Rates on these loans... cause it seems they can have them!

@Bend Over , Do you know most of the Western World actually has laws forbidding such things? The Government pays for all the expenses of the campaign, and forbids spending above a certain amount. Those countries elections are no where near as flash, they definitely are not game reality shows quality, but they do happen to work quite well. They also seem to have less people who want to make a buck off the process getting involved, something about transparency within the system drives them away. Cause skimming from Campaign Donations is one of the lures, for corrupt politicians. Can't do that in most Western Countries....
