How often do you see a 42 footer being pushed by twin outboards? This beautiful Scout 425 LXF, a new model from the company was quite impressive with just two V12 Mercury 600 Verados. We jumped up on plane fast enough to blow Alan's Maui Jim's off his face (LOL) and topped out around 63 mph.
Enjoy this video and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Love the design of the Scout family of boats, that wide bow flare should help keep everyone fairly dry when offshore. The same as many (most?) of your viewers the thing that stops me cold at getting a new boat is the Almighty George. _ONE_ of the new Verado engines has a higher MSRP than what I paid for my _house_ ! . Maybe you could pass this question on to the Mercury and Scout engineers if you don't have an answer. Why didn't they set the outboards farther apart? Seems like that would enhance low speed maneuvering and limit turbulence interference between the two drives when at high speed.
@brandonnelson4164
@brandonnelson4164 3 года назад
The motor has to be in the water to push the boat. Putting it on the corners it’s going to come out of the water.
@michiganengineer8621
@michiganengineer8621 3 года назад
@@brandonnelson4164 I'm not thinking about _that_ much of a spread, just putting the (as shown) inner mounting bolts where the outer ones are. Say an extra 18-24 inches of separation. Although even going to an extreme, you could always use longer (deeper) shafts like they do currently with the outboard engines on quint and sextuple installs.

@@michiganengineer8621 You want to make sure that the props stay in the water when turning. Also, if the engines aren't perfectly synchronized and run at slightly different RPM, then the boat will naturally turn towards the side with the slower prop, and the farther apart the props are then the greater this torque will be. But with modern ECUs with engine synchronization, that really shouldn't happen. Another important argument is that you have more usable transom space (at least in the corners) if you place the engines as close together as possible in the middle of the transom.
@brinkee7674
@brinkee7674 2 года назад
It doesn't hurt that they are close together as the engines don't turn, only the lower end. Having engines as close to center will enhance the ride and leave a better wake for trolling

You can hear the engine some but I hear the boat slicing through the water over those engines so they have to be incredibly quiet

I don’t get it more HP and the speed increase is not much more than twin 450R.. Somebody help me to understand why the speed has not doubled!
@wahconah98
@wahconah98 2 года назад
These engines target different markets. The 450R is a race engine and is nearly half the weight of the 600. The 600 is designed for getting large boats up to speed quickly and quietly while reducing the number of engines hanging off the transom.
@karipintakivi9153
@karipintakivi9153 2 года назад
33% more power = 5% more speed. Diminishing returns. Also R450 weights about 300 kg and 600 V12 600 kg. Which do you think would be more reliable in the long run? Big displacement heavy engine with twin propeller or compressor charged race engine?

I think twin 600 would weigh more and cost more than triple 400 (or 450s for that matter)
@petersouthernboy6327
@petersouthernboy6327 3 года назад
Depends. The Yamaha 425 XTO weighs 975 pounds wet, so trading 300 pounds for 175 hp on a 30,000 pound hull is a good tradeoff. Plus the variable pitch dual props and 2 speed trans are designed to give both holeshot and top end on these heavy hulls.

Servicing mechanics nightmare regardless of what the service intervals are. The Verados are problematic enough, combining a V12 with a two speed gearbox and bastard stepchild of a Zeus pod for gearcase & steering is inviting failure. Combined with a lack of inperson training from Mercury you have a motor I wouldn't take for free.

@@petersouthernboy6327 how far ahead is Mercury’s technology? I thought back in 2016-18 Yamaha had the drop on them. Little did we know what was going on behind closed doors. All these new Mercury’s are incredible. My 2015 150 is one of the finest motors I have ever owned, and by God’s game I had my share. Blessings

@Michael Reynolds ZF has been building marine transmissions and gearcases for decades now. The V-12 is built on the now proven V-8 architecture. The trim/ tilt and steering are more accessible on a lower "pod" than they are on a conventional outboard midsection
