Here is a December 1984 episode of Scrabble. Debbie and returning champion Bill (who has won $3500 in two wins thus far) battle in the Scrabble Sprint for $1500 to start things off. Who will win? No copyright infringement is intended.
@"The Unedited Fun & Games Channel", yes, early back then, on Tuesday, December 18, 1984, this "Scrabble" game show had Mr. Charles "Chuck" H. Woolery as its former host just as his previous announcer there was late Mr. Jay Stewart [though actually, it turns out that his real last name was Fix while his middle name was Stewart]!

1:47; Here, you can briefly see the letter display before it's covered by the clock. I don't know where the clock would be located onstage, but I'm sure it would be somewhere that the contestants and Chuck could see it.
Later in the run more players seem to go after the blue and pink squares.. since they know about the money they can get from it. These early eps. like this one with the normal Crosswords format seem like the contestants don't know about it..
