There are 2 major challenges paddlers tend to have with the scramble rescue.
The first is getting over the rear deck far enough. While most attribute not clearing the deck to a lack of upper body strength (and some is involved), technique matters (and your kayak could be making it more challenging - ow.ly/36Ic50N8rx5).
Starting close the the kayak and using your forearms for leverage with strong butterfly kicks will help displace the hull and allow you to draw the kayak under you rather than try to pull yourself over it. The further away from the hull you start, the less leverage you have.
You can also start further back and nearer the stern - less deck to clear - but it does mean more distance to travel over the rear deck.
The second issue is getting into the cockpit - the two key things here are to stay low and tucked and to 'inchworm' rather than slide across the deck. You will have better balance and gear doesn't get caught up. Make sure you inchworm far enough forward to drop your butt into the cockpit as you sit up to keep your center of gravity low.
For those who can get onto the rear deck but still find getting into the cockpit difficult, consider the side-saddle option.
And it can still be challenging in bigger conditions!
