Thanks for posting. For me the 15 swap is working out great - I would have been able to do it quicker if I had seen this video first. I think this will help other less experienced people like me.
Hello form Japan. I started considering buying scrambler 400x and found your very helpful videos. Thank you for giving a lot of inspirations! Hit like and subscribed!
No need to pull the axle. Just loosen up the adjusters to provide enough slack in the chain to remove the old sprocket and install the new one. Just did mine the other day. I like the gearing change, bike just seems more calm in each gear.
Just did this mod yesterday (ofc this did helped me a lot) 😅 And yeah it feels so calm gearing now ;) Rpms have definitely dropped by 500 for first couple of gears. Tbh I used 15t sprocket from bajaj Dominar 400 also changed front break pad from bajaj dominor 400 (same part used by ktm 390 )
@@ANIK5261 Tried to source it from KTM although atleast in bangalore they only sell the full sprocket kit with the chain and not just the front sprocket. Hence the question for the dominar 400 sourcing. Any help is appreciated.
I'm swapping mine tomorrow. I'll do my own research, but is there an intuitive way to set your chain tension afterward? I almost feel like pulling the axle IS the easy way, lol. I am a novice on bikes though, so.. 🤷♂️
My name is Kevin. I live near Lake Erie in Southeastern Michigan. I’ve been following your videos and I’m very impressed and I wanna thank you for taking the extra effort. I had mentioned buying a 15 tooth sprocket didn’t know where to get one and I appreciate your interesting articles and I follow you now and subscribe to your channel.
Definitely going to try this. Not that I would ever ride a motorcycle on the Pellissippi International Speedway. Thanks for detailing the process and the results in a usable and easily understood format.
Thanks for the awesome 400X videos! I have had mine 2 days and am enjoying it. Ordered the 15T sprocket today and will follow along with your video to swap it.
Thank you for this great fix for better top end performance! It's on my list of things to do. Question: can you make a recommendation of better foot pegs that will fit the 400x? Something wider and more dirt bike style...thank you!
Interesting I will do this mod it would of been good if you had done a 0 to 60 mph Comparison before and after the change, Also in the video you didn't enable off road mode! Because the traction control light was coming on! Also when off road mode is set by holding down the button for 5 seconds you know it in the mode because a light is permantly on the dash when it is
You know its funny how certain exits, interchanges, interstates have the same flavor whether its Tennessee or all the way down to Ocala Florida. Unless there is a major elevation change in view, they all look the same! The only clue is the names and numbers on the signs.
This is definitely on my list of things to do sooner than later. I did the same thing with my CBR500R and it worked very well. I’m very happy with my scrambler overall. My only gripes are the really poor headlight performance and the massively over-brightness of the instrument display at night. Looks like you live in a nice part of the world. 👍😃
I was very interested in this as well but I put bigger knobbier tires on my bike and that helped tremendously with the short gearing, it still even with taller tires feels like it could have better gear ratio so I may go this route! Keep up the good work bud!
Beware. The stock Triumph sprocket does not have threaded holes to use a “puller”. Some of these sprockets are virtually cemented on. They do not simply slip off the splined shaft as this video makes it seem! Good luck. The new aftermarket sprocket will come with these threaded holes, btw.
I’m thinking of a triumph 400 test rode one last week nice little bike but I ride a gsxs 1000 with a map etc etc makes sense to buy the little bike to hold on to my license!!! Not sure I could handle the hp drop I’m torn tbh
Excellent video and audio. That engine and the gearing...beautiful. I did the same change on my first V-strom and will do it immediately when I get the Scrambler.

I bought 400 X scrambler Triumph should thank you. You’re half the reason I got one.
I had no idea he was THIS versed in bikes when he sold me my S400, lol. I am throughoughly happy with my purchase, but I can honestly say if I had had the budget to get the X... I may have actually considered the additional height, lol. These things are incredible for the money.. Now I have to try to understand this entire sprocket situation.. Because no matter how many times I tried, I couldn't find 7th to save my life on my first ride.. 😂 Thanks again, Will! I'll see ya soonish, Buddy
Hello, and thanks for the video. I have a doubt, clicking on the link of the sprocket, the sprocket on the link says for ktm Duke, is the same for the scrambler?
I just replaced the stock Rear Tyre 150/60 R17 with a 150/70 R17 on my Speed 400.. It resolved this short gearing issue & the bike now runs very balanced!.. The bike now has become ever more compliant on bad roads + higher ground clearance + riding ergos improved.. Quiet obviously higher top speed/ lower revs in each gear.. So just 1 proper tyre replacement was all that was needed for my Speed 400!!.. So Speed 400 guys who'r unsure what to do, Ive given you a very simple solution 🤷
Haha the new bike comes with 150/70 tyres now. I have a question. When you say more compliant on bad roads, do you mean better suspension performance or are you saying that because of the increased ground clearance?
Hello, i am a fellow 400x owner, just one question here, does this have any impact on the throttle response, like the 0 to 60 is taking more time now? and what about the low end torque?
@MusafirKeKadam yes, taller gears will increase top speed, but at the expense of less low end torque. I feel like overall this change made it much more balanced power for my needs
Just ordered my 15 tooth sprocket. I was recently asked, why not use the 15 tooth from the Speed 400? Are those not available from Triumph? Also, what’s the tail bag you are using? I like how it connects to the bike. Thanks for the great videos! Keep them coming!
Thanks, lots of other 400X content on my channel! The 15T from Triumph is currently on backorder, which is why I went with the JT Sprocket. The tail bag is Triumph, but not sure what it's really designed for. Video about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IQI0dfSXKAk.html
@@RidgeRoamerthanks for this video! I ordered the 15 tooth sprocket you recommended and put it on last night. Works great! Makes the lower gears behave much better. Great video!
Did a similar upgrade to my Ninja 400, worked great for the highway! Also, didn’t detract too much on the track! Are you considering doing an exhaust upgrade? Headers and exhaust have greatly aided my other bikes(Kawasaki 1000sx & Z900). Just wondered your thoughts for the upgrade to a Triumph single-cylinder.
Thank you for a great instructional video! I hit like and subscribed. Have had my Scrambler 400X for about 6 months now and am eager to make this first mod to the bike. I would like to ask you about some of your gear if you do not mind. What is the manufacturer of the rack, tail bag and tank bag? And also, what is the type of floor jack that you are using. I am interested in all of these... Thank you again!
Thank you for the video! I´m curious about top speed in six gear and the acceleration in high revs in the real life (including a pillion or not). The bike it´s lazy with 15 tooth sprocket? Could you speak a little more for us?
I just did this today and really like how it makes the bike feel so much more relaxed through all the gears. Especially on the open road at freeway speeds. Great video, I referred to it during the swap. I tried finding the bolt torque specs online but no luck...any idea where they can be found? Rear axle and front sprocket nut...
I just finally got the official fly screen from my dealer and as far as i can tell its there to look pretty didnt notice any less wind blast. Are there any other teeth sprocket options available for the triumph 400s? I see everyonebis allergic to torque wrenches on you tube
What socket did you use there 2:00 to remove that bolt? Can I ask about the jack that you used to lift the bike? Also the tool that you used to punch the axle out of the bike
I love your videos. I just had my Scrambler delivered yesterday and I'm looking forward to modding it. I miss Tennessee tremendously with all the mountains and curvy roads. We hope to move back that way by the end of the year.
@@RidgeRoamer is it because I’m not pulling my clutch in all the way? It’s because I’m going up hills a lot, I’m often afraid that if I pull my clutch in I’ll just drop 😭 I’m not a very experienced rider since I got my motorcycle license not too long ago
Did you find any difference in vibrations at higher speeds? What I mean to tell you is, the vibrations have increased or decreased after changing the sprocket? I would appreciate it if you could share this information with me, thanks.
is the rubber cushion necessary and does the stock sprocket have one? I just ordered my sprocket as well as a slash cut tip exhaust from AJ cycles in NY.
This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks! Question, the link to purchase the sprocket shows a Duke 390, and my assumption is it is interchangeable, correct? I'll be ordering mine now. I tried ordering the Speed 400 sprocket but could not get confirmation from my Triumph parts dealer that the Speed sprocket would work, he said the spindles showed a different part number. I was going to order one anyway as the sprockets are inexpensive, but I am just going to order your recommended sprocket. Thanks again, this will really help on the long stretches of highway I'll be doing on my annual motocamping trip in a few weeks!
What kind of phone mount do you use? The one that I have is centered (which is what I wanted) but it sticks up so high that it covers half the guage cluster in front of me.
Hey, Nice and useful video. Wow, I impressed with this idea and I am going to change on my bike as well. Is length of the chain sufficient or do we need add more links? What are the other sprocket option 16t? I really don't have idea on this.
Great bike, great video! I'm also thinking about changing the sprocket. I've seen all of your 400X videos and I'm a little surprised that you seem to think the front brake is OK. I find the braking effect very poor and you have to use a lot of hand force. Are you thinking about it or do you perhaps have a solution?
The real issue is some people are finding the rotor warps. I am very light on my brakes. Only 1400 miles in, my rotor is warped. And getting it covered under warranty? Triumph makes it impossibly difficult. If it becomes system wide issue, a replacement will come. Not holding my breath
@@RidgeRoamer one last thing - does this change help reduce vibes at 90 mph . In your video I couldn't get a clear view of your mirrors vibrating. Hence asking 😁
