Tell you what its great if your doing this on your own and people can't be bothered to bend there backs or get there hands dirty. The problem you have telling all the people what to do and how and most importantly how much money they can make , that will kill you rather dont say anything enjoy the spoils and live happy. Hear in France it was just like that it wad paradise. But then the people got wind of it and now if you ask anyone for a little scrap they say how much do you give me for it and they prefer to bring there dishwasher or washing mashien by them selfs to the scrap just to make 3 euros. Its goten impossible hear to do scrap. Then the Romainiens how steal ewerything they sea. Had a knife fight with 3 of them the othet day over 2 alloy broomsticks and a car tirer . So i advice all scrapers of the US just dont give up traid secrets its never good. So 2 people working all day for $160 CAD -$10 gas) = $150 profit. 8 hour day x 2 people = 16 hours labor. I guess $9 / hr isn't that bad but I don't know...

I'll add my 2 cents here. Definately worth doing. I cut grass for a living so I'm always out there anyway. But what I see are scrappers appearing a disappearing. Sometimes metal is on the curb for like 5 minutes before someone gets it. Other times the bar-b-ques all find the garbage truck. Hard to decide whether to try to do this or not because any given day there can be like 10 people scrapping or zero. Currently, I just grab big piles of aluminum if I see them while I'm cutting grass.

We are located 10 minutes away from Ottawa Ontario. I live on the Quebec side in the Outaouais region. I do scrap in Ontario also, its not very far, but price wise we get the same on both sides so in the end it only depends where I do my run that day.

I do this in the UK i make around £200-500 per day also jobs with my chainsaw

every little make's money.another person's scrap,junk is money in the pocket for a small outlay and now and then you get a good bonus and you are provideing a service by recycleing , good luck to you stay safe.

I can't really tell what is what I have a big pile of metal but last time I brought things in like barbecues I didn't make as much money as most people because you get more money when you separate each type of metal and weigh them separately

In my neighborhood down here in the United States it is considered technically illegal for anyone but the city Sanitation Dept to pick up anything that is put out on the curb for trash. They won't bother you if you are just walking by and see something that someone put out and you take it. But if you go around in a truck picking stuff up you can get into trouble. BTW, your wife is very pretty.

I do not have a problem with scrap metal, but In my area so many people do it that it is hard to locate stuff thru curbside or craigslist. 2 times a year we are allowed to throw away almost anything on the curb and a week later the city picks and cleans it all up. People forage through and drive thru neighborhoods looking for all sorts of stuff. I used to do it alot when I had the time but working full time and having other sources of income really put it on the back burner.

I work for DirecTv...and every time I come home to clean our my van...they scrappers..waiting to pick out the old dishes and LNBs I throwaway....just found out how much an old dish is worth....LOL I think I might be setting up a collection some where shortly...I had no idea.

I wish I had a truck in Manhattan,NYC when I walk around the city people throw out all the time huge scrap,tiny bar fridges,old computers,boxes of metal bars,car battery's,etc.By the industrial areas there is a gold mine and it never gets touched so I called a friend of mine and he cannibslized it

You can talk with the scrap yard Boss for better prices if you show proof of how long you been recycling there. That's what me and my cousin did and it worked.

In the uk we do it in pickup vans. The amount of overloaded vans u see about is crazy. In the area I live, they use a CD with a Bugle type horn track and various other recordings, play it through a loudspeaker on repeat. That way we know that they are coming.

This only works when you don't already have tons of people doing it already. Just the other day my neighbor put out a old TV and the next morning it was opened and stripped of its internal components but the rest was sitting on the curb.

I think where I live here in Arizona is the scrapping capitol of the United States.

I have a tip for you. I lived in Hawaii and discovered that using a stationary tool was much better than trying to shuck a coconut with a hand tool and believe me coconut skins that cover the actual coconut are harder to strip than a radiator . So... fix a prying tool to the fence or trailer hitch or in concrete and use both hands to hold the object and bodyweight to pry it free . The difference is day and night.
