Any broadcaster that can willingly destroy a money making franchise like Doctor Who, for the sake of political dogma, is in serious trouble

Brilliantly put and I totally agree with you, but the BBC would say that they're trying to right the wrongs of the past (???) and that it's OUR FAULT that we don't like what's happening.

It's not just the BBC. It's Hollywood. Disney especially. The amount of film franchises that have been wrecked due to identity politics Is unreal. And when each one bombs the fans get the blame. It's a form of self harm. It's insanity.

Ben Elton said, truthfully, that in the early 1980s a comedian could build a whole lucrative career just by going on stage and shouting "Margaret Thatcher". It certainly worked for him.

And yet, Blackadder was one of our best ever comedy programmes, I believe. Back then, I wasn't opposed to the anti-Thatcher movement (my family were all coal miners) but even so, I couldn't support the idiot Scargill. Tough times for the mining 'communities' who have never really recovered and, as with the EU referendum (and even more so the Indy Ref in Scotland), friends and families were ripped apart by politics. Strange that my father was a massive labour supporter who manned the picket lines and his brother, my lovely Uncle, was a 'scab'. They never recovered from that and both died as 'adverseries'. How sad.

My real gripe about Ben Elton was the way he dissed older, established comedians - Jimmy tarbuck in particular was regularly the punchbag for his "jokes". Benny Hill was portrayed as some sort of lech because of course Elton was "right on" with his caring sharing supporting feminism image. Fair enough if those were his beliefs but you never saw benny Hill, Jimmy tarbuck or any of the other established figures take a swipe at others who made it before them. For someone who championed political correctness and respect for all he seemed quite lacking in showing respect for those he despised because they held different views from him or performed comedy that wasnt to his liking. I feel like I need a shower now. Feel unclean talking about him. Hateful, hateful man

As an American years ago my impression of the BBC from what I knew was that they were, as they say, the gold standard in almost everything they did. And to a large degree this seems to be correct. Perhaps 8-10 years ago I was becoming more aware of Marine Le Pen and wanted to find out what she was really like. I came upon a BBC interview with her. After several minutes my impression was this is not an interview, it's an inquisition. Every single question was an accusation and not even a veiled one at that.

That used to be regarded as a universal truth, but since the sixties it has ceased to apply. It follows a broader cultural pattern. People who were rock fans or pop music fans in their teens are still fans of the same stuff in their seventies. The rock bands themselves keep performing the same sort of music with the same sort of "aimed at young people" lyrics decade after decade. Supposedly adult people (especially men) are still watching films for children (Batman, Star Wars) no matter how old they get. With a few exceptions -- mainly grumpy old men such as myself -- everyone's tastes have been infantilised. And political opinions or stances have been following the same pattern. It used to be that people were revolutionaries with Che Guevara posters on the wall when they were in their teens or twenties, and by the time they reached forty-five they had become conservatives. Not any more.

I always love to watch / listen to / read Rod Liddle. His uncommon common sense, his amazing breadth of vocabulary, and his sense of the absurd,, means that he can harness his fierce intelligence and communicate with humour.

These guys are news/current affairs, so that’s where they are coming from. But if you are in television distribution, you can see the BBC is in catastrophic relative decline against global rivals and can’t survive on the UK-only licence fee. The national licence fee doesn’t generate enough revenue to buy the rights to the Olympics. Discovery bought the European rights and then sold a package limited to a max of two simultaneous live transmissions to the BBC, U.K. only. Attenborough made his last series for Netflix and the BBC bought just a U.K. rights licence, time limited, in a deal brokered by an Australian distributor. It can’t fund a drama series with the global reach, star casting and production values of The Crown or Game of Thrones. The BBC barely makes any self funded drama. Look at the end credits and you’ll see it’s a Amazon, Netflix or PBS co-production, the other party taking the worldwide distribution rights. The iPlayer was an open goal to switch to global subscription and become the world’s broadcaster. But the ridiculous obsession with the licence fee, a 100 year old funding model for radio, has prevented the BBC from being as big as Netflix, Amazon, HBO, Disney etc. in television. The result is it’s been left far behind and increasingly we won’t be watching it whatever its politics, bias or agenda is or isn’t.

My late parents had lost all faith in the BBC. My father would get incensed at the bias of broadcasters such as Emily Maitliss. Even the legend that is David Attenborough has become increasingly preachy, part of the BBC's endless pushing of climate change and environmental issues. BBC Radio 3 has been dumbed down over the years, although it still has some good programmes. BBC Radio 5 Live is good on sport, but can be frighteningly woke when it covers other issues. One night a few years ago I was shocked to find the Northern Irish presenter (sorry, forgotten his name) hosting a late night discussion about a certain group of gay men who go to parties where everyone is high on drugs and will have sex with multiple partners during the party. When someone on the programme tried to argue against such promiscuous activity, they were slapped down immediately and accused of being homophobic. Ironic really, because many gay men are in steady, monogamous relationships, others are celibate, and I am sure some of these two groups would not be advocates for such drug-fuelled orgies. Rod Liddle is brilliant, I have the greatest of respect for him. He was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth and has worked hard to reach the peak of his profession. He is a truth seeker, someone with common sense and decency who wants to see civilised discussions where all sides of an argument are presented. I am fed up with the woke liberal metropolitan elites that control everything now, even banking. They don't know better than you or I as they lecture to us from their middle class bubbles in such places as Islington, where the Guardian is the newspaper of choice and the soya milk lattes taste great, served by mainly foreign workers on very low wages.

They don't think you're mad, Rod: they think you're evil. Up until a few years ago, only true religious believers still used the word "evil." Even now, they would deny that they think that way, but the denials are wearing thin. It's a religion, and people who oppose the true faith can only be "evil."

The public are not just unhappy about the recent output of the BBC, they look back at the past 50 years or so, and feel that they have been manipulated, used, and abused by the organisation. They see the comedies, the dramas and the news broadcasts as all part of an assault on our culture, and a corrosive presence that was subtle and deliberately used against us, at our expense! The sense in the public that they've been deeply conned, is palpable, however, there is also a kind of consciousness of having been rendered addicted to the Beeb. Many people haven't chucked in their licence because they are addicted to their programmes. They know it, and we can all understand it, I'm sure. Of course they need to go cold turkey, and asap, but we all know that it takes strong character to do that! I haven't had a tv in many many years, indeed only ever had one for a few years, so never long enough to get fully addicted. I had a mum who was super suspicious of the manipulative capabilities of the media.

You need a right wing, left wing and a government source of broadcasting. All funded and protected. This way there is always one source to go to if two are corrupted.
