I agree that it's worth putting an engine in. I wouldn't try to fix the one that's in it---with oil that bad, it's likely to have bearing damage

romone crosby with enough money and time it's possible. But a 3400 would be ideal just will run with a 3100 fuel trims (fuel ammount). Or you could do 3400 heads or even a 3400 block with a 3500 upper intake. Many possibilities lol the 90° 3800 is pretty different. Better to buy a 3800 car already and if it's naturally aspirated buy a supercharger to put a tune on it. Because people want a shit ton of money if a Buick or Pontiac have a 3800 supercharger factory car.

flush oil....add fresh oil and put in Bar's permanent head gasket sealer....let idle for an hour....cool it and then drive....no need to replace the intake manifold gasket.....my 1998 3.8 liter motor has 230,000. miles on it (still driving it) and has never been opened up (motor wise)....i started using permanent head seal since the car had 170k miles. I have a bad output transmission bearing...probably a bushing now....makes all kinds of noise...but i'm still driving on that bad bearing for 11 months now. Lumina's are hard to kill...they can go to 300k miles.....with temp sealer put in all the right places. i know i owned my car since it had 16k miles.

Owned 3 of these, they're bulletproof other than the known intake gasket/Dexcool problems and an occasional water pump or alternator. Also they were awesome driving in snow, you could basically gun it in snow and it held the road very well. I was always passing people and felt safe. That was most likely a rental car. If this video wish shot in 2018 That would mean this lumina was 20 years old. I don't give a flying F how pretty the pain is but even with A good engine and low miles this thing wouldn't Pull more than $800 unless it was sold off a buy here pay here "we finance anyone". As a wholesaler in licensed appraiser I can tell you that This trim package mated with That non 3800 It isn't worth anything. The Chevy lumina, oldsmobile intrigue, And Buick Regal /century Corporate cousins could Survive a long time but not As long without the 3800. The 3100 was built mostly for fleet use.

The 3100 and 3400 V-6 engines are known for intake gasket problems. The gaskets fail all the time. The water pump could be bad, and it overheated. When it overheated the head gasket could have blown.

My moms friend gave her a 97 Lumina back in 07 she had to put another 3.1 in it to get it on the road as it sat in his yard for 2 years. She had it all the way till 2014 after putting 100k+ on the whole car. Ultimately the radiator hose kinked in the motor overheating it and ultimately seizing it. 195,000 miles and also same color. That car was also my backup driver whenever my ranger was in the shop. But anyway, save this car! New motor and it will never let you down!

I use to fix these Lumina's, you could find them quite often with water in them. Why they say these are great engines is beyond me. The intake gaskets were terrible in them and so were the head gaskets. And about half the time the cam bearings would turn in the block and make the engine useless. Small block chevy's like 265 283 327 350 never had these problems. And to resell them you just couldn't make that much after fixing the engine and cleaning the car up. GM really has went down hill,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I fix Honda cars now because they are much easier to sell,,,,,,,,,,,,

Probably costs more than that to fix the gasket along with whatever else is probably wrong with it. Shame to scrap such a nice looking car but that is what happens. These cars u can say bad things about them if u are a Ford lover but the motor has the power u need to get into traffic it is a 6 cylender and its good on gas like I said I have 2 of them can't Beattie smoothnes of the ride if u are looking for performance car then get a camera or a mustang not one of theses cars these cars where built for family and was ment to be a family car it is a shame that at 80 thousand miles blown head gasket because the motors are good on thes cars and they are big and heavy sturdy car. Not like the ones they make today wich are nothing more then small lunch boxes on wheels. And u get hit in today's cars your chances of making it out alive is slim at best

Liked Lumina's. Had one from family, '92, 26k in '02. Goofy cooling system...they said Do Not Overfill, i guess i did and blew a bypass hose. Only stopped because a person screamed "Your radiator blew!!" Drove the car another 10 years, baby'd and looked great. 104k and the check engine light would come one after it was hot, stopped then started again. No history grid. Went thru one ordeal where the water pump and EGR needed to go a year earlier but wished i would have fixed whatever. It was a nice car.

If I had alot of money or became rich I would buy them all up they are great cars to have I have 2 myself and have nothing but good things to say about them. Some parts are tricky to get to and u have to take other parts off to get to them because of the emissions system in them but other then that easy to work on. And very very very reliable can u say that fir most of the cars that's out today I say no

How come your battery is easy to get to? Mine has that bar across the battery and the windshield washer fluid container over it. Have to remove air filter also to get battery out.

my mom and dad had a 92 lumina, they bought it new, they traded it at 80,000 miles, had a main bearing oil leak, but still ran good, with the 3.1 in it, was super clean at the time they traded it in on a 2004 Malibu, always a nice car to drive and good on gas, this one looks really clean for a 98, worth fixing

It's almost certainly the intake gasket. The 3100s ate those gaskets like candy. We had a '99 Lumina and I think it was on its third by 160k miles.

Probably head gasket. The 3.1 is famous for blowing intake manifold gaskets. However, when that happens, it'll usually push oil into the coolant, and not very often the other way around. All that having been said, they're usually worth fixing.

DrFruikenstein however...the cooling system is pressurized...turn the engine off where's the coolant pressure go....my name might have ford in it but I've done A TON of intake gaskets on these 3 series turd v6s. I guarantee Gm developed the dexcool to cause problems...why else would they put stop leak tabs in the bottom of the coolant resorvoir.
@DrFruikenstein
@DrFruikenstein 6 лет назад
thefordmaniac It doesn't make any sense to me either, but that's just my experience with fifteen of the 3.1 litters, and three 3.4 liter engines. Only two had visible amounts of coolant in the oil. I only sent an oil sample for testing on one (my own), and it did show coolant in the test, but it also wasn't visible. It's safe to assume all of them would've come back positive if tested. The Dex-Cool is SUPPOSEDLY formulated to be long lasting, and gentle on the plastic and aluminum parts... Personally, I'd rather use alcohol and water than Dex-Cool, and alcohol is about as gentle with aluminum as a sledgehammer is with glass. About the only thing Dex-Cool is good for is the bad joke of drinking orange Cool-Aid in front of the guys while handling the stuff, and saying it tastes funny.

DrFruikenstein I think Dexcool does a fantastic job of etching metal away and slugging up in coolant passages. It does those things great! When I worked at Autozone and O’Reillys and someone was changing a water pump, radiator or another part of the cooling system I’d sell them a power flush kit and instruct them on how to get rid of the Dexcool.

My parents 98 malibu with the 3100 had head gaskets replaced twice by 150,000 miles then grenaded some pistons at 199,000 and went to the scrap yard.

In all the years I've worked on cars I've only seen 2 or 3 with bad head gaskets. The lower intake manifold gaskets always go bad in these. I have from time to time seen them with bad timing cover gaskets and where they leak it makes it look like a bad head gasket.

Intake gasket issues 3100/3400 all day long. I replaced the intake gasket on my 2001 Grand Am 3400. You can tell by coolant puddling at the corners of of the intake and puddle on the top of the trans.
