Scrapping compressors. Are they worth opening and are they always copper windings inside?

Hello scrappers and planet lovers. In this video, I will do an experiment to see if it is worth opening a compressor to remove the #2 copper windings found inside. I will also try to answer the question "if the motors are always made with copper windings or sometimes with aluminum?" I will show you how to safely and effectively identify and sort the metals in order to help you maximize your profit.

At 8:38 the copper motor weighed 13 lbs. FYI total weights of all items taken apart was 9.5 lbs of #2 copper worth $42.00 and 75 lbs of tin worth $4.50 for a total of $46.50 opposed to $13.76 unopened compressors.

Good profits off them!

So extra $32 minus 5 cutoff wheels, and how many hours of work start to finish? Your #2 copper price is also nearly double iscrap prices in the states.

I've been doing this for 30 years, and like you, I have only seen 2 aluminum wound compressor motors. I'll take those odds!! 👍

You won’t believe I opened 4 fridge ones in my life the first pair were copper. and today I did two that were sitting in my basement (I was saving them for when I have time) to my disbelief they were both alluminium after one and a half grinding discs and after accidentally breaking a glass mug with tea in the process I was so frustrated.

After you remove the copper windings, if you remove the plastic and the paper from the holes, it’s class is now #1 steel, if your scrap yard has that classification, it’s worth more per pound then shred👍🏻 And after I put 6 electric motors with aluminum windings in the shred load, when I went back the next day with a load of aluminum eavesdropping (painted aluminum)..I was told I could get 0.55/pound for those aluminum windings..as he reached in a bin and showed me a pile the last guy brought in..😳 I’m starting another bin for aluminum windings now🤣👍🏻 good video Tin Man😃👍🏻👍🏻

That is unfortunate about the broken glass. Sadly, the only way to tell if the wires are copper our aluminum is by cutting open the compressor. If they are copper, well worth the effort, and if aluminium still tin/shred weight.

I use old car mats I pick up in the trash for doing compressor motors. it chatchs the oil good

Hi I wonder what is the price of copper you have
@cognac8297
@cognac8297 10 месяцев назад
I came across a window unit the fan motor casing looked double size. But inside the casing the electric motor was hald the size. And another one i took apart had the first wire was copper and the second spindle had aluminum. Two types of materal. What a waist. I would have boughten a dryer or washer with a aluminum motor for that price. It was a shim

Yeah, you never know what you are going to get unfortunately.

We get screwed at the yards around me. If you take in just the staters or transformers, they don't take them as copper motors. They put them in the shred pile.
@TinManScrapper
@TinManScrapper 10 месяцев назад
Wow! Then better to take out the copper or aluminum and sell that separately

@TinManScrapper I'm in the process of doing that. I don't have all the proper tools for scrapping, so I have to improvise. I'm going to build something to put staters on. I also have 5 compressors to open up.

Why so many cutting discs? I just cut open 4 compressors and 5 electric motor casings and didn’t even burn through half a disc..

I think my discs are not great quality. Perhaps that is why they are always on sale!

Make sure your scale has 4 points of contact on solid surface

I found two that were aluminum in one day so the percentage must be a lot higher.

I know the compressor motors from ice makers are aluminum, but I have yet to find an aluminum one from an air conditioner or large dehumidifier

@TinManScrapper mine are mostly fridge compressors. I have 15 of them. I opened up three of them and two were aluminum.

You are mixing things and making things more complicated..Describe each weight and size and all details one by one.Please dont mix the things..still appreciate your efforts.Good luck.Positive criticism.
