I might call that the big man big hammer approach. No wasted saw blades, craft knives, or angle grinder blades.

I spent 3 hours on my first small attic fan motor. Took it to scrap and made 18 cents for copper. Wear and tear on tools and $2.00 in gas. Used bolt cutter for loops. Oh well i appreciate the process and saved some landfill.
@Bugs11000
@Bugs11000 4 месяца назад
That's ingenious. I used to cut these copper wiring with an angle grinder. Causes a lot of copper dust and also the cost of the grinding blades. Your way is a whole lot better. No dust. Maybe you could use a car jack to remove the copper strands instead of a hammer. Just an idea.

I broke those motors down for a living the absolute fastest way to break those down u put the motor in the vice and cut one whole side off with a angle grinder some times i used a chop saw the chop saw was faster then i used an air chisel on the other side the whole thing is done in 40 seconds once it is locked down on the vice on the chop saw i timed it when i did it U make real money when u do volume.

I'm more of a keep it simple sort of gal! A spring and a foot pedal would make your fastest and easiest fix at the moment! OR - have you ever seen the log splitter made with a car spring and counterweight? Also rigging up a boat wench and a hook to pull the copper out rather than banging and prying? I'm a 75 year old woman and have a bunch of motors to scrap! Thanks for the video! You have given me ideas that will ease my labor😁

Thanks for the video! I heard a tip today: use a winch to pull the copper out. So, you'd clamp the stator down, then use hooks probably on chains, running to a clevis likely hooked around the winch hook. You could hang the winch or even do it horizontally! I really like how you noticed there were loops, and just cut the loops with the cable cutters. So much less mess than a saw or angle grinder!

I have a pile of the same kind of motors I am working on now. I been taking apart bigger ones and been finding silver switches with some nice silver disks. I sometimes am unsure if I should just sell the motors as motor scrap as opposed to getting the copper out but I think it really is worth breaking them all down. I use wire cutters and sometimes a pocket knife to get all the string off before I pluck the wire. I basically use the wire cutters for everything. Cut the wire, pull the wire etc. It's hard work no matter how you do it but I enjoy it.

What are the silver disks in
@mysterybuyer3738
@mysterybuyer3738 3 года назад
@@rustedratchetgarage6788 I found the disk in the switch. These are big industrial motors. Regular motors have silver in switches too. And there is a little silver in those crimped metal housings that are attached to the wires. I just save all the silver stuff I will either sell it on eBay in a big lot, try to refine it or just save it up.

Takes a little practice but after the other end is cut, place the motor on the ground (not standing upright) and strike the uncut end hard with a hammer. After a few blows the copper will bend downward until the loop takes the full force of the blow and the copper comes right out. That cross pen hammer you have really works good for that job (use the pointed end). I have done that so many times that after the copper is cut I can usually get all the copper out in around 20-30 seconds using the hammer..

hacksaw and a screwdriver is all I have ever needed. goes through the copper like butter and the blade will last forever with how soft copper is. I use a plumbers chain vice, cut one side off with a sawzall or bsndsaw if it's small enough. Then I use an iron workers spud wrench to pry out the bundle. Bolt cutters also work well to grab and kinda roll it out. Nice idea with the wire cutters. A.c. compressors also have the same stuff inside. Be sure you have a can handy for the oil.

Good video thanks for making it. I do mine a little differently. I'm a big fan of the 4 in grinder with a diamond wheel. Put the motor in the vise cut the top off and then I use a punch to punch it out. If that doesn't work I take a pair of snips hold it by the wire and I beat on the steel part use gravity in the beating motion to get the wires out.

I would build a bigger vice type holding set up for the motor once you have got it to the wire removal process, then turn it upside down so you are pounding it down into a capture bucket. Less shaking around and saves you the step of tossing it into your bin. Great work though lad, I just strip electric cables.

Once they've cooled, air chisel one side of the windings off smooth to the steel plates. Scrap It! don't put it in a dump somewhere. It gives you something to do. It makes you money. The small city I live near has 5 zones for garbage pick-up. Monday thru Friday. My neighbor and me go get all that stuff thrown out and we scrap it all.

Cheap demo hammer with a low profile sharp 6 inch blade, split the stator in half across the middle. 2 inch blade with a U shape in it to pull the coils. Will take you less than 2 minutes a stator.

I cut one end with the grinder then use a sds hammer drill with a chisel cut to a shape kinda like yours It's way faster than using a hammer The smoother the cut the easier it comes out

Angle grinder flush cut will save you time and pain of holding to cut each coil. Yes you will spray copper dust but if you have something behind it(a box or bin ) will catch most. Sweep up the rest.

Not really worried about the dust on the floor more worried about the copper dust in my lungs.... But I guess I should wear a mask

For me, I am going to try this, but keep it manual. I'd be worried about getting de-knuckled now and again with the hydraulic option. Can't wait to try a similar manual setup, as my hands cramp up pretty bad doing this with a smaller parrot beak.

We strip down 1 to 4 ton motors normally.... if you don't use fire to burn the glue and isolated coating off there is now way you can remove the copper winding....

Use an angle grinder to cut off the loops on the first side (- which gives you clean/ straight/ non-connected ends), then removing from the other side is HUGELY faster than this method.

For sure ... but when the doors closed in the air conditioner is on all your breathing in is copper dust plus Throwing Copper dust all over everything in your garage I normally do use a cutoff wheel but this is why the video is called another method by using the saw there is no dust really if you cut that many Motors in that much copper everything in your entire garage will be covered in it

The fiberglass type handles on the cutters will break. Have broken a couple pair trimming tree branches. They even had a recall on certain ones. Bought mine at Home Depot. Just saying this as an FYI. Don't think you are putting the stress on them that I was.
