What inside an Oscilloscope? Well, here's 2 to have a look at.
Tektronix 7633 & Tektronix 2440.
The 2440 was amazing and well worth looking for if your into gold recovery.
Keep scrapping & Have fun!

Hi Ben, I have just got back from the best ewaste pick up I have ever had. A guy called me earlier to arrange collection of what he described as cabinets. He was traveling up from London, I arranged to meet him at a location in my city Norwich. when I arrived there were giant communication type servers already out in the car park, hundreds of slot cards and giant cast ally cooling systems. He said everything was from mid to late 1980s and that it was his job to decommission all the sites around the country. He filled his van with all kinds of gooodies, massive copper bus bar, cable, boards and some very strange looking stuff. when he got to what he thought was his 1200kg weight limit we then started to fill mine. I will try to send some pictures in the morning.

Eph Payne I made a post mentioning you by name! I finally got to a vid before you Eph! I was out with the family eating. I said to them, "wait I have to make a post before Eph!" Everyone at the table (about 8 family members) stopped and waited until I was done, then they're asking who's Eph(?). So I gave them a little back ground of Ben's channel and you being 1st at everything and wiser. Just starting my day, you have a good evening.

Ben, you might want to list for sale all the plastic parts like the feet and the plastic pieces on the back that hold the power cord. Also the knobs and plastic push buttons as an entire lot. People that are refurbishing the scopes might need these pieces. I really enjoy watching your videos...

I kid you not... right after i watch this video i came across an oscilloscope in a pile the same day! I wouldn't even have known what it was if i hadn't just watched your video. I brought it home and ripped into it right away, but it was no where near how good yours was. Mine was a 1997 and it didn't have any CP chips. Only a few medium grade boards and one decent board. The CRT had a huge copper yoke for how small the monitor was but i think the pre-90's are the good ones.

57:00 Custom made cpu/active circuitry and I will be highly surprised if you would find any information on these since this was propriety made things so no info should be found. Quite inefficient and very expensive to make compared to whats in high end oscilloscopes today.

Careful with some intensifier tubes and CRT tubes with green glowing screens as if you break them it releases Cadmium, Cadmium compound is put on by brushing.
@MichaelBerthelsen
@MichaelBerthelsen 5 лет назад
You should be selling those online if you can! Unless they're completely ruined, many of us would pay decent money even for an older one, as new ones are VERY expensive...!😉 The exception, I suppose, is if they're so old as to be broken from use, making them functionally useless. And for parts, they could also be quite valuable to people!

I don't think anyone has that kind of money. It seems like and I agree that there almost priceless! I think I got more excited than Ben when he flipped the board and it was loaded with all of those gold pronged ic chips, then to really seal the deal 3 very nice CPU's! It's art, Ben's fine Art!!! I can see them put behind glass in a frame! I have my 1st mid 80's server board put on the wall in my workshop! I wouldn't sell it for $5k, don't need the money that much!

When the 2440 came out in 1988 it was worth $11,500USD. If you get any more oscilloscopes in good physical condition do some research and check the current prices. Even a broken one of these goes for $75-150, maybe more. A working one goes for $500-800. It was still cool watching it getting taken apart though, good stuff.

Tek. 300 MHz, 4 channel oscilloscope, about $100 as is, but $800 repaired. Unserviceable does not mean it can't be fixed, it just means it is not working. It can also mean it is beyond economical repair for a commercial workshop compared to its value today. Amateurs will spend hours on such stuff. Put it on ebay for $200.

Those Tektronix CRTs are different from other brands, they’re specially made and are part glass and part ceramic. The long neck where the guns and everything are located is clear glass, then there’s a ceramic middle section, and then a thick leaded glass plate is attached to the front where the display actually shows up. That whole middle ceramic section is painted on it’s inside with gold (or possibly a gold/palladium mix according to their production video). So if you’re just recycling the Tektronix CRT’s and not getting the PM value from them, then you’re throwing your money away. Also all of those 3-pin components (both the metal can type and the little black plastic ones) are transistors, not resistors. Some of the metal can type will actually have six or more legs such as the one you unplugged in the video, and those are actually IC’s.

I've done a lot of these , there is no danger with the CRT , and there is commonly a lot of gold in the CRT , many of the electron gun is gold plated , and the inside of the glass on screen end can be gold washed , if not there are silver washed --- SO DO NOT JUST scrap . I break up the glass tube and make collection of tube with gold & glass , and silver & glass .

You could have got more selling AS-IS on eBay for those, or for parts, as that Tektronix 2440 alone goes for $130 plus AS-IS that not including shipping, as people charge separate for that. Worth way more then scrapping it for gold/copper recovery. Most test equipment goes for decent bucks, I usually repair them and then resell them. Sold a couple 2440 for $550 each that I refurbished. I pay usually around $75 to $90 for them, even if they don't power on, so long it intact broken as well as a few other engineers and techs do, as worst case we just scrap them for parts to recovery cost, if not worth repair. Granted you probably didn't know any better, but best not to scrap everything and look up going sold listings before scrapping it. I can get scrapping it if to far gone and corroded, or damaged beyond repair?
